sounds pretty friggin sweet. although, it looks a bit like the people stand out too much on the tileset, perhaps make the grass and the trees a little stronger in their green colour?

I know that they're all three stage blah-blah-blah, D/P evolutions blah-blah-blah, but what about their types?
If you don't want the traditional Fire-Grass-Water, try Rock-Fire-Steel or Poison-Grass-Ground. Or if you think you can make it work, combine any two triangles so that they work either way, i.e. Fire/Grass, Grass/Poison, Water/Ground or something like that.
