Sorry I've been out all day, I've been doing the whole traveling across the nation thing.

But oh my, Zekrom. That's, that's just smashing mate. Brilliant, absolutely lovely. Do you wanna in the next few days or so, begin the League thread with that? After we deliberate a few final details obviously.

Such as - are we all on board for the dual-type gyms? It seems like everyone that's posted about it has been positive so far, so unless anyone is starkly opposed to it, speak now or forever hold your peace.

Edit: P.S, 2 hours lets call it quits on qualifiers, eh? I think it's been a pretty decent amount of time.

There's certainly some details that need to be worked out, as well as seeing if everyone's on board with the ideas and rules and whatnot in that post. Hopefully we can officially start the league next week, but let's see what everyone else has to say....

Can we challenge gym leaders/Elite 4 members in any order?

And I guess a suggestion: maybe allow challengers to change their teams until they get their first win against a gym leader, so they're not locked into a team without any progress.

I need to know if I'm handling any other challengers this evening. I've only battled three people so far, and the one I won might not be counting.

If I don't get any more battles and people get ranked ahead that I never square off against, there's something wrong here.

EDIT: Odd as it sounds, I have a good replacement for Mega Lucario. Better, I think. Come at me.

Challengers, come forth. I am waiting...

Hmm I think I should bring up the /third/ big issue for the league, which is whether or not there should be a preset champion. I think we shoildnt have any champs until someone takes the crown, the way it is in most online leagues. It gives it a more down to earth feel that the title has been earned, not given. Personally I'd decline a champ position if it were offered.

I also suggested something to this effect.

All right, I just sent Polar my opinions on this situation. Since the made-up-in-the-middle deadline of Thursday at 11:59 PM has passed and I have not seen one person online today to do battle with (despite being here all day), I can legitimately say that I have not had an opportunity to bolster my standing. If people who I never got to battle here were to get positions and I were to be left out, I have a legitimate claim that I should get the victory over them by default.

If we want to avoid this situation (which in an IRL scenario would involve money, lawyers, and a lot of hurt feelings), let's close this mess of a thread and start a proper round robin after a day to discuss the rules internally; Zekrom posted a nice synopsis to work with. Round robin should be three Pokémon, not full battles (for time), and single battle only. Go in with six, choose three, and hope you pick correctly. One match per pairing. None of this "either do a single battle or a 2/3 set at your discretion" confusion. I still don't know what the rules are and I have been here since the beginning.

The fact of the matter is that a battle tournament with varying and changing rules should never have started in the middle of a "suggestions" thread. This entire thread has been a mess.

I concur. Does next weekend, around Friday - Sunday sound like a reasonable time frame to have all the rules and stipulations hammered out and the league operational by?

i am confused how does this work
can i enter with my team?

Entering for the purpose of being a part of the league officially ended today, sorry - but we should be (hopefully) ready by next week if you'd like to challenge the league. :)

I'm wagering everyone is unanimous on the leaders have to come before the Elite 4, and I think it's close to unanimous, on the order of the leaders not mattering, or once you beat them, the order of the Elite 4. But this may be something else to get group input on. And - if you lose against the first leader, technically retrying would by synonymous to restarting since you have no progress to lose. So yes; it would be okay. I don't think once you've beaten one, you can keep that progress if you lose and want to change your team though; since that would enable counter picking for gym types.

Sorry about the timing Cyclone :c But we probably should stick to our word on battles for qualifiers ending tonight. Speaking of, I have a question for someone else's arbitration hopefully, Fokko and I have STILL not been able to make up the doubles match he DC'd or suffered a connection issue during, and all I have for the record between us is a singles match which I won. The doubles was a 4-2 pokemon situation in my favor before the connection dropped, and I haven't been able to catch him at a time that works for both of us yet to make it up. He told me approximately 30 minutes time before this post, tonight he was at a softball game for charity, the cause being orphans. Very admirable. But what do we do about this :v Do we call it a draw...? Or does the one win go as the win?

Mmm... So is the League established yet? I read Zekrom's post and looks pretty refined.
I do enjoy battling much, so would like to join asap :)

It does doesn't it? That's a sexy post. Damn fine outline. But as you may have seen, call it for next weekend. (I think. Someone else should probably throw an opinion on this in too before we call it final, but I'd wager that's a fair time.)

Hahaha. I suppose you called this out since you know as the only undefeated player, you are the most suitable candidate for champion. :P But alright, since you would be at the top anyways - if anyone has weight over what's done with that position it's you. I agree on keeping the champion seat open til' someone beats the league. And look forward to that challenger.

I have to sleep now; the con I'm attending starts around 8 30 tomorrow, and I know a lot of the best merch will disappear FAST.

Points we should discuss throughout the day though -

  • Does everone agree with the dual typed gym leaders suggestion? Is there anyone who disagrees?
  • Are we leaving the Champion spot open until someone conquers the league?
  • Is next Friday - Sunday a reasonable time to open the league?
  • Which rules do we need to elaborate upon further / set in place that we don't have currently?

Again, like Ive said to a couple of people: yes it is kind of messy, no there are no set standard of rules, but everyone involved has the knowledge to assume the basic set of rules being 6v6 no ubers. Obviously it has ran smooth as butter, hardly anyone actually unvolved has filed any kind of complaint. If people get ranked above you, in all honesty, it doesn't matter bro. Theres only 2 elite spots anyways. Odds are most of us will be gym leaders anyhow and wont be in higher positions than anyone else. Ive been on my phone all day today and the past couple of days, I havent had the time to battle everyone. I dont think anyone has. We've finished qualifying and the idea of starting all over sounds inconvinient and a drag

Keep in mind, in my view (and this is someone who until this has battled online at most once or twice in his LIFE), I had no idea what was going on until it was too late. For someone new to the whole thing (and still pulling off a surprise win somewhere), I did as well as I could, but when you don't even see three or four people at all yourself that says something about group activity at the outset. I really think starting over is best. If you rush something into operation, it can only fail.

And I say this even if I AM selected as one of the "leaders". I know I wouldn't be an "elite".

I dont think they're going to start over again. I have been sick all day so i have been getting lots of rest. But as far as the elite and gyms go... well, i tried my best!!

Yeah lets all just be chill. If anyone didnt make the cut then theres probably going to be an opportunity to prove everyone wrong and become league champ

From what I understand, you should default to league champ. {XD}

I'm not gonna accept it haha, plus we should be having a vote whether to start with one anyways
If what I proposed is accepted (it would involve starting over, note), and you were to win that, you would be Champion like it or not. :)

I won't discuss this yet, however.

Hi, I'll try to throw my two cents in about possible details for the league...I've organized a similar league on another forum so I can share my experience and try to help out. :)

  • Rematches: Set up a clear procedure on how to handle rematches so gym leaders don't get flooded with challengers after just beating them.
  • Disconnections: Unfortunate but they happen, so a procedure on how to handle the outcome would be good. It gets kinda iffy when blame gets assigned due to DCs so we worked it out by assigning the win to the gym leader but that persistent DCs will be addressed. We wanted to keep the focus on the challenger and their adventure so we tackled it that way so that every win they get would be significant and not just a result of faulty internet.
  • I'm not sure if it was addressed but what about the idea of having more than 8 gyms? Challengers can still be required to get (a minimum of) 8 badges but more gyms can give them more variety and spreads the burden of maintaining gyms to other members.
  • Lay out the rules for both PS/wifi. Smogon OU has some extra rules (like a limit on Baton Pass and a ban on Swagger) but it might help if the rules between the two formats are kept as similar as possible. I think PS allows you to run battles under your own rules (or no rules) so you can do it that way, but make sure challengers are still following the rules you lay out.
  • Have a private area/forum where those involved in the league can discuss issues. It helps if those participating have a private forum where they can talk about things regarding the league (rules, suggestions, new features, etc.) or just get feedback on their teams. You can also use that private area to monitor challengers' teams and replays to make sure they're sticking to the rules.
  • Replayability: This was an issue that we addressed early on: what is there to do for people after they beat the league? I ended up breaking down the league in periods (or seasons) where a new season would have challengers start again, giving them a time limit as well as something new to do. A new season can also mean a rotation of gym leaders, Elite 4, Champion, and lets you try out new ideas.
  • Be clear about how the gyms are set up. Our league opted to stay pure monotype but allowed gym leaders to change their teams without prior notice, we mentioned that this is to keep challengers on their toes as well as prevent the gym leaders from getting bored. Possible that counter-teaming might get brought up but you guys look like a friendly bunch who just want to set up a fun event for everyone so it shouldn't be a concern ;)
Really awesome you guys are working on this and I'm looking forward to trying it out!
