[Event] Secret Delibird Challenge (Complete)

ELITE 4 & CHAMPION:
Tried grinding in Victory Road but quickly got bored, moved to Sky Pillar and it did speed up the process a bit, Nuzleaf finally got to evolve as well but also got bored. So I just get everything I can, Ice Beam taught to Walrein, Psychic taught to Claydol, Facade taught to Machamp, Aerial Ace taught to Sceptile, and from there its just constantly fighting and dying to the E4 as a way to get my team's level up. I don't have enough money to buy lots of healing items so unless absolutely necessary, I'm just brute forcing this itemless with only 3 Revival Herbs, 1 Revive, 2 Energy Roots, and 1 Hyper Potion...alongside the many PP items I obtained.

I am also just reminded of the 6 Rare Candies I got! (I say as I just got through Sydney).

The Sydney fight was the easiest, Sceptile absolutely breezed through everything here except Mightyena who I entered with Claydol to bait the Sand-Attack and Intimidate before switching to Machamp.

Phoebe is the second hardest, Shiftry can't one hit the ghost mons and the Dusclops were too tanky. The first Dusclop was easy but the second one I had to use my Walrein since only she can tank it's moves. The Banettes was easily handled by Shiftry and Sableye I switch into Claydol to do some damage with Earthquake before finished off using Sceptile.

Between here I used all my Energy Roots on Sceptile and Claydol.

Glacia is Machamp's warmup, Low Kick Oh-koing all her mons except Walrein. Since Machamp died to Hail just as Walrein came in, I sacked Shiftry so I can revive Machamp safely and 2 hit the Walrein for free since it kept using Sheer cold.

I actually hadn't gotten to Drake in my grinding run so it took me a second to come up with something, and then I look at Illumise. Charm the Shelgon to death and Encored it into Protect where Machamp came in, Bulk Up around 3 times and 2 shotting everything except Salamence who Walrein easily took care of.

Unfortunately by this point I ran out of healing items but I still do have my revives. I did NOT expect the battle to instantly start the moment you enter the Champion's room so, we ball. Illumise did some good damage to Wailord with Thunderbolt and using up Wallace's potion. Water Spout also missed thanks to Lax Incense so Illumise did great damage before going down and Sceptile finishes it off. Milotic came in, Sceptile can do good damage, Detect the Toxic and I didn't pay attention here but either it used Surf or Sceptile survives Ice Beam??? He got crit Leaf Blade so Milotic went down in two hits.
Tentacruel came in and decided I can do shenanigans with Machamp, bulking up as I switched it in so Tentacruel used Ice Beam, and then Facade Tentacruel, Whiscash, and Ludicolo in one shot. Unfortunately poison caught up just as Gyarados came in. Tried to stall with Claydol but it got one shot by Surf, brought Sceptile in and I revived Illumise as it got one shot by Hyperbeam.

Got the chance to do the funniest thing here. Sent out Illumise and Charm as Gyarados recharged but Encore failed next turn because it didn't use any move last round, thought I was a goner until it went for Dragon Dance. And the Star finished this challenge with 2 Thunderbolts to Gyarados!!

Spoiler: Final Team & Scores:

The Secret Delibird Challenge in Pokémon Sapphire

Part 3

This part was THE grinding part. I had to grind Aerys II a lot and let it evolve in Gyarados. I was kinda postponing this paragraph, because I didn't want to seem rude to my Scrambler, but I find Gyarados extremely boring. Especially in early gens. It has a boring moveset, weird combination of typing and moves and even the design is not that interesting. I would rather use Magikarp. I'm sorry.

Because of that, I barely used Aerys II. Not that it would matter, this part is rough for such Pokémon. I think I only used it against Brandon's Combusken.

Now on the more interesting matter - Wattson battle! It was a pain. I knew it would be long battle and would probably end in PP stall. I had to bring a lot of healing and patience for this fight. But after countless number of Bullet Seeds, I won!

Not the most interesting fight and update, but I can move on and get more team members.

I'm looking forward the next part. I'll be finally able to get some more team members, which means more fun with their builds.

I'm actually a bit surprised you don't like Gyarados at all because when I got it for my team, I was personally excited to use it. (Long post incoming. Please don't view it as an attack on your opinion because it's 100% not my intent.)

Its special attack stat isn't the greatest for Surf or the "beam" TMs as, I think, they're called (Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, and Flamethrower), and the combination of Bite and Tackle isn't great for when it first reaches its evolution, but it's really cool to use in the late game, especially once the game finally gives you the TM for Earthquake. (My Golem will have Earthquake by level up, so I plan on using the TM on Gyarados.)

Due to its Special stat of 100 prior to changes with Gold/Silver, Gen I Gyarados might actually be the best non-starter non-legendary non-Psychic-type mon in RBY, at least if we're talking about playthroughs, which is where the joke of raising a Magikarp until it evolves into the behemoth of Gyarados comes from. I've seen arguments that because Alakazam is a trade evolution, and because there were no TMs / move tutors for the elemental punches in Gen I, this means Gyarados might be more useful than Alakazam for a Gen I playthrough in a specific way of thinking. There's other factors such as Psychic's limited PP, and the fact that Abra teleports away from you on Turn 1 (unless the unintended-by-the-devs 1/256 chance is in your favor).

As for the design, I thought it was the common opinion that Gyarados just looks cool, but I can kind of see where you're coming from since Gyarados looks like a typical sea serpent now that I'm looking at it critically. I still stand by my opinion that Gyarados, even in Gen III where he's not at his best, looks cool as heck! However, I respect your opinion.

(My Golem will have Earthquake by level up, so I plan on using the TM on Gyarados.)
The issue with Gyarados in Gen 2/3, specifically, is that its physical movepool is very limited prior to the physical-special split. Earthquake in particular is exclusive to a single late-game TM that's competing for a lot of different Pokemon who want the move.

The only physical moves Gen 2/3 Gyarados can learn that aren't Earthquake are either normal-type moves, a 20 BP Rock Smash that's only useful against the Aggron line in RSE, or a physical Hidden Power type.

That's a very fair criticism, but I was defending Gyarados at large (not just Gen 3 Gyarados).

I'm currently picturing an "old YouTube" Dorkly video where Gyarados, Claydol, Altaria, etc. are arguing about who should be taught Earthquake, and it's making me laugh more than it should.

Claydol: "Swampert, you can already learn Earthquake by level up! Let me have this!"

Gyarados: "Oh, so we're gonna teach it to Claydol? With those attacking stats? [/Sarcasm] Come on, we might as well throw it away!"

Update for Gym 4:

Oh, gosh, this is taking exponentially longer than I thought.

I immediately taught Bulma the Kirlia the TM for "Shockwave" because I was tired of not having anything for trainer Wingull. I challenged Trick House a second time and then I defeated the Winstrate family (aside from Vito of course). I broke some rocks north of Mauville, and then I caught some Pokemon cuz I was started to get embarrassed that my Dex count was so low. I went through Fiery path, then I finally got the TM for Secret Power, so I went back to Slateport and bought a 2nd copy and a Hidden Power. The only party member with a semi decent "base power" for Hidden Power was Mightyena, but it was Hidden Power Poison which is really only good for the constant pressense of Lombre and the occassional Nuzleaf.

Then I think I broke the boulders separating Wanda and her boyfriend and received HM04 "Strength" and I briefly went back to Rustboro. I actually don't remember why I went back to Rustboro since I already had the Exp Share. Maybe I wanted to check on the berries south of Rustboro.

I continued back through Fiery Pass ... Fiery Path? The cave with the fire and the need for HM04! (I think it was around this point I realized Gyarados maybe didn't need Secret Power when I'm going to get TM27 "Return" so soon, but in hindsight, it was kind of necessary for Gyarados to have something for a physical move besides Tackle.) I went through Route 113 (one of my favorite routes in the game!) and then got the Blue Flute. I arrived in Fallarbor Town, and I think it was around this time I asked Explorer of Time for help with the team because it was getting difficult keeping a mental list of what moves I'd learn throughout the game, which ones were needed for mid game or end game, what TMs I could obtain or buy, etc.

I think it was around this time that Kirlia learned the move for Psychic, so from here on out, I was running Psychic, Shockwave, Calm Mind, and Teleport. (Teleport is important since the devs made HM02 so late game, but I have to be strategic about how I use Pokemon Centers because I can only teleport to the last Pokemon Center I healed at.) Krillin the Gyarados had Secret Power, Bite, Tackle, and (for some reason) Splash, which I thankfully got rid of for Dragon Rage before I ended up using Splash in battle by accident. Tenshinhan the Geodude had both Rock Tomb and Rock Smash (for some reason) in addition to Magnitude and (for some reason) Mud Sport (which I totally was not planning on using at the 3rd gym before completely forgetting it). Besides Hidden Power Poison, Mightyena had Bite and Tackle and [checks notes] Howl. Oh, yeah, I forgot I had that. Um... Oh, yeah, and I taught Yamcha the Lombre "Secret Power" because I was starting to get concerned this thing would be dead weight until I defeat Norman (Gym #5), and Wally's Dad shuts his pie-hole and gives me HM03 "Surf."

I traveled to Gravity Falls... Um, I mean, Meteor Falls... Um, Hidden Power Poison kind of surprised me around this time cuz it could one-shot the Lombre and Nuzleaf thanks to Mightyena's physical Attack. So then I found Team Magma at Meteor Falls. [Starts jammin' out to their theme song] Then Archie came and told me to watch out for Team Magma [Starts jammin' out to the other theme music] "Hell yeah, we groovin'!"

Then I fought some trainers south of Meteor Falls and north of Rustboro. Then I followed Team Aqua to Mt. Chimney. This poor woman working for Team Magma said she wants a nice house when land expands. I hate gettin' all political and ****, but maybe Team Magma has a point about there not being enough land. Some people pay $25,000 a month to rent a one-room apartment next to a noisy ice machine in the bad neighborhood in a one-horse town in the middle of nowhere... Actually, I forgot where I was going with this joke.

So then I beat the Magma Admin Tabitha. ... Tabitha?! ... I beat him up, and then I beat Maxie up. So after that, I returned the Meteorite to Prof. Cozmo, and he gave me TM27, and I used it to teach Gyarados "Return" right in front of him. Then I finally was able to head to Lavaridge Town.

I beat up all the Fire-type users, not with my freshly evolved Graveler's Magnitude or Rock Tomb, but with Bulma the Kirlia's Psychic and Shockwave. Flannery's 1st Pokemon Numel tanked Kirlia's Psychic and set up Sunny Day, and then Flannery healed with a super potion, and then the Numel tanked another Psychic, so I thought "man, forget it" and used Calm Mind. Then I clobbered Numel and Slugma, but I was surprised by the Camerupt before her ace even got out there. Camerupt survived the boosted Psychic and set Sunny Day back up since the sunlight had just faded. Then I clobbered it with another Psychic. I sent in Krillin the Gyarados against her Torkoal, and... [Torkoal's White Smoke prevents Krillin's "Intimidate" from working] "Ah, man, I totally wasted the Intimidate ability in this battle." So, I immediately used Return to... [Torkoal lost about a fifth of its HP from Return] Um, damn! ... That was a 91 base power attack, and he took that like Goku! Time to break out the Dragon Rage. "Krillin fell in love!" Dang it, Krillin! [Starts cracking up in hindsight] So I used Dragon Rage once, and Torkoal knocked me down to 62 of 87 HP. The sunlight's bright, so I'm glad I'm using a water-type Pokemon. "Krillin is immobilized by love!" I ate a Body Slam cuz of that. 35 HP remaining. Thankfully on the next turn, Dragon Rage hits, and it's enough to break the tank that is Flannery's Ace Pokemon. Phew!

Oh, look, Bulma evolved into Gardevoir. That's wonderful!

Okay, so despite my plans, I didn't get past Norman today... or go through the weather institute... but I did defeat Flannery. (Phew!)

So here's the team thus far:

Spoiler: The team after Gym Leader Flannery battle

I probably won't evolve Tenshinhan into Golem until after Gym 5 for the sake of not overpowering it too early. That's it for this update.

The Secret Delibird Challenge in Pokémon Sapphire

Part 4

Okay, I should probably post these faster, because I won't finish this run on time otherwise.

I quickly got through the story stuff. Maegor I dominated this part, because he, even as Aron, tanked most attacks and had super-effective answer to (almost) every foe. I can't wait for him to evolve.

I also got a new Pokémon - Swablu called Rhaenyra. Swablu used to be a mascot of Challenges back in a day. I'm looking forward looking it in this run.

Both Aegon I and Meagor I got a little bit overleveled, so i opted to use Rhaenyra and Aerys II more. I still used both Aegon I and Maegor I in the fight with Archie, because of their type advantage, but I mostly put them on bench after that fight.

[PokeCommunity.com] Secret Delibird Challenge (Complete)

To make the run more interesting, I decided to exclusively use Aerys II to beat Flannery. He learnt Dragon Rage right before Archie, which became his most powerful move at the time. It's crazy how bad his level-up moveset is this gen.

My strategy for Flannery was simple. Use the combination of Dragon Rage and Bite and pray that Aerys II survives.
[PokeCommunity.com] Secret Delibird Challenge (Complete)

Next up, I'll get the last 2 members. I'm looking forward to them. But I fear that it will also mean that I won't have any reason to use Aerys II anymore.

Update for Gym Badge 5:

I'm going to skip past the Trick House and the desert because not much interesting happened there. I got a Hard Stone, but I think Soft Sand for Magnitude is the way to go. Speaking of which, I did eventually teach Tenshinhan the Graveler "Secret Power" before entering the Petalburg gym.

I battled all the gym trainers to give Tenshinhan the Graveler and (to a lesser extent) Krillin the Gyarados more experience, and some of these trainer battles were annoying, but I didn't lose a single Pokemon here.

I had an actual strategy for Norman. My Gardevoir has Trace, so if I sent her out against Slaking, she's going to trace the ability Truant, which has happened to me once in the past. So, my plan was to send my Graveler out first, and then switch into Gardevoir for either Linoone or preferably Vigoroth (so Gardevoir could trace Vital Spirit and render Yawn useless) before spamming "Psychic." Special Defense is Slaking's worst stat after all. I also have a Chesto Berry on Bulma the Gardevoir just in case of Slaking's Yawn.

The battle starts. I send out Tenshinhan Graveler, but the faster Spinda immediately confuses Graveler. Thankfully, Graveler got a Magnitude 7 this first turn, so Spinda was clearly in the yellow here as a result. Unfortunately, Tenshinhan took a lot of confusion damage even after I used the Yellow flute once because Norman started spamming Teeter Dance even on turns when Tenshinhan was already confused. Well, Tenshinhan eventually snapped out of confusion and got a Magnitude 8 off.

Well, my strategy went out the window at this point because Norman immediately started sending out his Slaking, and I was like "You son of a biiiiiiii-" So I sent out Gyarados which has Intimidate. I started using Return, but I found it far more effective to just spam Dragon Rage and get the guaranteed 40HP of damage. Slaking used Counter a few times, but it only wored once early on, and ... Did they give this thing Counter **and** Focus Punch? Oh... oh, no, they didn't. That was a Ruby/Sapphire thing. So after the Sitrus Berry and one of Norman's healing items was used, I just spammed Dragon Rage four times, and Slaking thankfully went down. Phew!

After that, I sent out Bulma the Gardevoir who tanked a critical hit Facade from Vigoroth and knocked it out with one Psychic attack. I selected Psychic again for Linoone, but Norman was desperate, so he instructed his Linoone to use Belly Drum, which deducts half of the user's Max HP to raise attack 6 whole stages, so that was a little scary, but Bulma finished Linoone off before it got the chance.

After this, I was given HM03 for Surf from Wally's father, and then I visited my character's mother in Littleroot to get the Amulet Coin, which I gave to Bulma the Gardevoir for now.

That's it for this update. Merry Christmas, guys!

    [PokeCommunity.com] Secret Delibird Challenge (Complete)

Bam. Shiny Axew in the Connecting Cave. Didn't even mean to shiny hunt or anything, I swear. 😅

Once Robin caught up to everyone else, I made my way to Coumarine Gym only to be ambushed by Serena. Same deal with last time but now with a full team on my end and Robin dealing with her Quilladin instead of Byleth. With the help of two bottles of Soda Pop, the party's newest member managed to whittle the Quilladin down while powering through their rounds of Needle Arm (I didn't bother to count).

By the time I reached Ramos, everyone was at level 35. The old man had Jumpluff, Weepinbell, and Gogoat in his arsenal. His Jumpluff's Leech Seed + Acrobatics combo was pitted against Robin's Toxic + Venoshock combo with the latter winning. Corrin's presence alone threw his Gogoat's Bulldoze and Take Down out of the window, boiling down to Gust vs Grass Knot fest with both of Ramos's Hyper Potions wasted. And finally, Byleth claimed victory by Plucking the heck out of the gym leader's Weepinbell.

I'm not sure whether or not I should say this because it's not really my place as a non-moderator, but I want to say it in case anyone else feels the same way. Four users out of the twelve of us are done, which is great, but several of us still have three, four, five, or even six badges to collect. It's the holidays, which are generally hectic anyway, so I'm kind of worried some of us are going to either not finish the challenge in time or get a bit stressed out trying to complete the game(s) in a few days while balancing other responsibilities. If we had started on the 1st of December, I think this wouldn't have been an issue, but we didn't start until the 12th, which made a big difference for the deadline.

The problem for me (and I don't want to speak for anyone else) isn't that I won't win because quite frankly, I'm only in it for bragging rights. The problem is that someone else is getting points from my challenge, and I don't think it would be fair for me to abandon the run.

I don't want to twist anyone's arm because it's not my place to make proposals to change the challenge, but I think maybe an extension of three to seven days would be nice. I don't want this challenge to drag out into February or March, but also... the Pokemon games don't really have a lot to do with Christmas anyway, so it's not like we'd be listening to Christmas music in January. My concern is just that it might be stressing out some users to get their respective challenges done on time. I myself have been avoiding AntonBlast (a fantastic game from what I've played so far) and procrastinating the (mostly complete) 4th chapter of my Pokemon fan fiction because I really want to get the challenge done on time. Maybe someone else also feels that way, so I thought I should say something since the worst the mods can say is "No."

I would like to issue an extension of two weeks, ending on the 18th, but the issue is that this event is part of a holiday event with a defined end time. I'll have to confer with the events team to see if they're willing to allow us to move this to the Challenges forum and continue after the end of Winter Wonderland.

@Janp @DragonEye @Eleanor @Reginald Cosmic @Arcaneum @saniachan @Celèste1

I've gotten permission to issue an extension, so Secret Delibird will now be open until January 18th! You all have two additional weeks to finish your playthroughs. This thread will also be moved to the Challenges subforum after Winter Wonderland ends on January 5th, so look for it there if you can't find it here.

  • Chapter 5: Electricity reclaimed

So now it's time to go back to Lumiose... right?

    Wrong.

I mean, it should, but apparently these Flare zealots held the nearby Power Plant hostage. I tore through the grunts, eventually reaching one of their scientists, Aliana, whose Mightyena was... annoying at best. I thought Kris should be able to deal with it, but the dark-type hyena Roared her away. Same deal with Corrin, though Robin pretty much broke the cycle. How? By landing a Toxic on the pesky hyena and everything just snowballed from there.

Fast forward to the Prism Tower Lumiose gym, quizzes ensued. A necessary evil to reach the gym leader, Clemont. And yes, Shez evolved during the quiz session. He later took part on the boss fight by throwing a Rock Tomb at Clemont's Emolga-- never mind, said Emolga Volt Switched to Heliolisk before Shez could do so, hence him switching with Alear. Between Clemont's Hyper Potions, Heliolisk's Thunderbolt (they probably would want to use Grass Knot had I sent Kris out), and Alear's Dig + Oran Berry + Cheek Pouch combo (?), the little mouse eventually prevailed. Kris did join the fray with her Power-Up Punch and Mud Shot when Clemont sent his Magneton out, however. And back to Emolga, Shez finally had the chance to kick butt with his Rock Tomb. To be honest though, I originally expected Byleth to fight here instead of Shez, but sure, it works too.

I'm starting tp+o regret smashing through Minecraft lol. Oh well, hope those of you who are still going have fun!
Are you dropping out of the challenge? Or are you just concerned that you won't make the new deadline? It's completely fine to keep playing past the new deadline, you just can't win a VPP if you finish late.

And if you are playing, how far into the game are you?

I'm confused. This is regarding the Pokemon Violet run you signed up for; we're not in the Archipelago thread.
