2nd Gen Steel and Dark type were introduced

This was the generation that introduced the Steel and Dark type. The types were introduced I believe, to balance out the extremely broken type that was the Psychic type. While no Pokemon were retyped to Dark in Generation II, the Magnemite line was given the Steel type in Generation II. I believe that a couple of moves were changed to the Dark type, however, but I can only think of Bite atm.

Generation II introduced a total of six Dark types, while generation II had only introduced six.

Back in the day, what did you think of the Steel and Dark type back when they were new types?

idr what I thought about them back in the day, but they were a much needed addition

The thing that always bugged me about Dark types in Gen 2 though was how in the generation they debuted in, none except Umbreon were available until after you became Champion, and the Dark type E4 member didn't have a full team of Dark types

I've honestly never liked Steel - it doesn't do nearly enough to differentiate itself from Rock/Ground (in purpose) and Electric (with the theme of technology-based Pokemon). A lot of Steel Pokémon that aren't pure Steel or Rock/Ground/Electric just have the secondary type tacked on, like the Alolan forms of the Sandshrew and Diglett lines which are inexplicably Steel despite that having 0 part in their design, or just kinda feel like the Steel theme was an afterthought (Corviknight, Durant, Lucario)

Dark is good!

i thought steel was cool and dark was cooler but in terms of gameplay, I never really got to use them. the steel types back in gen 2 was what, steelix, magneton line? not really that appealing. for dark type, there was houndoom line and sneasel but they were not that appealing either. typhlosion best gen 2 fire type

honestly, for me, if it weren't for the fairy type, I wouldn't ever use one steel type hahaha.
they're all great now, though. since there are more pokemon selections

Skarmory and Scizor were enough for me to appreciate the Steel type. Skarmory not having weakness to Water or Ground while being resistant to Psychic and Dragon with neutral on Ice? Yes, please!

Regardless, I've always appreciated both typings quite a lot even with my disdain for Johto (partially due to the aforementioned lack of new introductions outside of post game). I still use both types in about any run I do of any of the games now.

The first Pokemon game I played was Gold, so I didn't know about the brokenness of the Psychic type in the prior generation. Regardless of that, I thoroughly enjoyed the addition of dark and steel types. I remember at the time thinking Steelix and Houndoom were some of the coolest new Pokemon. I still love Steelix to this day. Where they missed the mark was making most of the new types of Pokemon inaccessible until post game or only obtainable by trade evolution. I had no one to trade with so I couldn't use Steelix or Scizor for years and I have no interest in raising new Pokemon after I beat the game.

So this series came out in... 2000?

At the time of exposure I honestly didn't realize there were extra types at that time until I got over half way through the game. Even then I still didn't really adapt to it and played the type matchups from the R/B/Y days. Even when they were shown in Pokemon Stadium 2 I didn't pay a whole lot of attention to them until months later where I was like "Oh yeah they have new types I need to try these Pokes out!"

Thinking about it now it only made sense for generation 2 to have an introduction to the new types. We branched into more types as the games moved on, dual types, natures, more stats... Unbelievable how much it has changed.

Steel was the new rock type a tank beast it was definitely a fun experience. I expected dark types to be a lot cooler but I realized that Dark types are more like normal types so I thought that was not creative at all. I felt like Dark Pokemon should of been more creepy closer to the ghost type, I never understood why ghost would be weak to darkness either.
