- kill me for this but i think HMs had their place in gen I and II. were they annoying? yeah. but did i find them as intrusive as i did in later gens? nah. there could have been better road block/progression stoppers but idk. they made sense back then and it genuinely did feel good to be able to use your pokemon to clear obstacles in (for your player, at least) a real life path. that being said though, going into gen III is where i felt like they aged out. it started getting excessive there and completely hit the boiling point in gen IV, i would say. nowadays they're not an issue, so it's not like i need to mention them, but you know. they started fine, i think, and then showed their age. also want to add on that with each gen comes a surplus of new moves and updated movepools for pokemon. it was easier to fit HMs into your team's movesets back then bc some of them were still decent!! surf (actually i'll still vouch for this one), strength, fly. waterfall is fine too, hell cut is even viable in gen I to a degree when you just need a neutral hit move to fill a slot for something that doesn't learn enough on its own COUGH vileplume. so yeah. they felt more like they had a place, they were easier to integrate.
- agreeing with the traded pokemon disobedience. i get it for the first few generations, but after a while when there were just SO many pokemon and sometimes you wanted to have them earlier than late or post game (or they're not in the base game at all but you want them ANYWAY), you'd trade them over early and you know like. you want to be able to USE them, damn. not a mechanic that aged well. had it's place at one time, but now i think it should just. go away
- sorry gen I your bag is shit but i guess if anything, it taught me to keep a clean bag and only bring The Essentials but still. fuck lol they learned from that one really fast tho but it does make replaying RBY (and GSC/RSE to a smaller extent) a big of a chore at times if you wanna HOARD THINGS
- this may not count but going back to gen IV and V without all the available online features feels weird, especially for gen V because they had SO much shit you could do like dream world and c-gear and that...link thing? and some other shit? i never did any of that so i don't know what i'm complaining for but i imagine for those that did use those features frequently, it's almost lonely and barren to go back to gen V in a way, isn't it? idk if i consider it something that didn't age well but it is still kind of odd in a sense. like you're missing a chunk of the game.
- please let me rename booty head the magmar i got off the gts gamefreak i'm begging you
i think i did this thread wrong idk what i'm talking about
