Why was I *not* informed that there is a mathematics club!!!!

And holy crap, Drakow didn't go dark something blooooooood and all for once during the short time that I've seen him post.

It's not that I'm *good* in math cause I really don't like how college teaches stuff in math... but I'm sure that it's not because of the subject but because of the profs.


@zappy- computers. If you get computers, then at least you have the fundamental thinking that is required of math rather you acknowledge it or not.

I really should brush up computers as I'm terribad in that area... but given how world today operates, the bar of basic computer skills are going up exponentially...

Not a fan of maths, can't do it to save my life. Half of it is unnessecary anyway, like for questions such as "use x to find c - y + mxc to find out the distance between bin 1 and bin 2." (obviously not a real question but y'know)

Really, who's going to sit there in real life and try and figure that out?

A lot of engineers, inventing new machines and techniques for making our lives easier.

It's just that I don't want to be one of them ^^' I'm gonna be a person who spends her days in a lab coat, dealing with poisonous materials, creating life and modifying bacteria... ~ exciting stuff, you know :D

You reminded me of a funny moment in one of my exams this year. This poor engineering sod who was sitting to my left, took a hardcore scientific graphical calculator into one of our exams. I kid you not, it was almost the size of an A4 sheet of paper. Such a device is forbidden and it was confiscated. I don't think he had another calculator on him, so I think he attempted the exam without one. It was funny in a sadistic sense. That exam was bloody hard as well V_____V
 
I am extremely poor at Math, it is one of my worst subjects that I never really cared about during my years of school and I actually wish I had been more willing to learn. Nowadays I've been facing the consequences of my mathematical knowledge (or lack thereof) and I think I may just start self-studying along the way.

I understand that, but a lot of schools make you learn this stuff as a compulsory subject before around year 11, where you decide which kind of maths you do, and a lot of the time it's got nothing to do with what jobs people wish to persue. That kind of maths isn't going to help, say, a chef. Unless you're one of those chefs that like using mathematics to cut your food.

No, most people in this world won't need maths. Ever. But up until you're about to decide whether you're going to college or not, you will still have the choice to do something where maths is needed. If you hadn't started doing maths when you were in kindergarten counting fruits and sheeps, you wouldn't be good enough to be able to choose a technical college program. Everyone doesn't decide what they want to be when they're 10 years old.

Plus, I hear they say maths make us more focused and intelligent. I wouldn't know since I detest maths and sort of refuse to do it :D My exam is going to fail so badly...

Also, I suddenly have 4500 posts. When did this happen?
 
I can go on and on about why do we do the math we do, but it'll probably violate my code of conduct on government information and planning... let's just say that as a math teacher, I support abolishing "math" as a *standalone* subject. I just think that it should be integrated into the other 3 sciences. Pull it out if and when you need it.

That way you avoid the chef problem mentioned above, which is totally true. Take pity on your teachers though. It's not that they willingly force it down your throat knowing very well that only those who enter university in the science/engineer streams will need the academic stream of math... it's just... what the government demands of them teachers?
 
Then you're one of the few with a mathematical mind or you got great teachers who helped you along the way, rather you like it or not. Naturally kids at a young age (like kindergarten and grade 1) don't get math because it's abstract and symbolic, and then they start disliking it cause it's hard... and downward spiral from there onward.

I think that post count is harder to rack up nowadays already. For some reason I just feel like topics are a lot more... "demanding" in thoughts compare to back then in PC (which is a good thing XD)
 
Well I actually have both, so I have an advantage in that department.

PC is going a little too fast for my liking. But at the same time I don't want it to get any slower..Oh well, I'll just grit my teeth and deal with it.

Ohhhhh you have no idea what you are talking about there XD

I like the pace of PC right now actually! It's not to the point that someone posted already when I'm still waiting for the page to refresh after posting. When it's daytime, there's a minute or two until the next post in DCC so there's an adequate amount of time to catch new posts. I hate it when I get ninjaed and I reply to someone's post, only to see that there's like 5 posts moving on to a new topic already. As long as that doesn't happen, I'm find with the pace.

Creativity... not something I'm good at either. I say open ended essays that are like pick any topic. I can handle essays, just that I much prefer the topic to be chosen already. Drawing is like totally out of the question XD (as otherwise, I would have an onion related banner!)
 
I'm good at foreign languages, decent at maths and history and absolutely horrible in any kind of sciences. Well, at them and at my own language, we always do bizarre stuff like analyzing poems there which I usually understand pretty much not at all.

Totally can't handle arts, probably because it's so subjective... always remember how in grade 12 english I got my final mark of 64% on my essay for government diploma exams, and then I sent it in for a remark cause I was pissed... and voila, 98% final grade.

Sending in something for......remark? And you somehow get a better score out of this? What Canadian educational devilry is this?

Ya it's for remark. The system is made so that there's 2 teachers marking it independently, and the average of the mark is the essay mark. If you send it in for remark, a 3rd teacher marks it and the 3rd teacher's mark is the final mark. Needless to say, my example just shows how subjective English can be. Not that math doesn't have its subjective elements, but the arts are off the scale in just how subjective it is.

Above 100 mark is the true educational devilry, my dear :3 extra marks should never, ever be given (yes yes I know and realize that tons of teachers do it, but I'm saying that it should never happen.)

Foreign languages... just something that needs so much practice that learning it without having the chances to use it outside of class is just impossible. French second language being mandatory for the early parts of Canadian education... ughhhhh!
