So I'm working on a medieval world and I use Latin words for inspiration when naming things, and I came across this

[PokeCommunity.com] The DCCverse: The Multiverse Lounge

It's just so weirdly specific, I don't even

    oh wow lmao x3

Well, I use Latin too. Infact most of my concepts for this world I'm creating is just a mesh of two or more Latin words :)

Wha, isn't it a bit too soon for a whole Multiverse Discord server? Using this thread for chit chatting until it seems like there are a lot of people who would benefit from an IM place seems less rash.

Yeah maybe, but it wouldn't really hurt anyone to get it up. Besides, if we want to make a more cohesive community, interaction between the members seem to be a plus tbh. Iirc, when we started the UG, we had a Skype chat on D1 so yeah :3

To be fair that was only open to the mods at the time and those of us they roped into helping xD
    It only grew later.

Anyway, I often use Latin a lot when worldbuilding as well. I think it's often the go to because it doesn't sound quite like any language we know today and nobody really speaks it so there wouldn't be anything weird sticking out to any native speakers of whatever language or anything. Plus Latin words just sound good.

That being said, I use a lot of made up words or even plain English too. This is very much the case with Jeimas the world I'm going to work on first.

I find Latin very overused and so terribly used. I cringe seeing the commonly used words like sol, tenebris, nox, and those words with the "um" suffix. Come on people, there are way more "exotic-sounding" languages out there. You don't have to let everyone know you tried really really hard to think of a name.

I use a mishmash of languages for naming. It really depends on mood and the intended world aesthetic. One of my favourite linguistic fusions is French + Japanese.

Well sorry for Arcanum then xD I actually simply grabbed it from an old pc rpg where technology va magic was a big deal, and thought it fit with the tech vs tradition I had going on (plus origin plot mystery etc).

    Latin inspired stuff is nice.

I think Latin is just very appealing because it carries a sort of mystique to it being the dead language and all. I was just thinking though that romanising non-latin languages could also be an interesting way of doing things.

Or has anyone here ever gone to the trouble of constructing a whole language of their own before? I've thought about doing so but it seems like an obscene amount of work.

Awww yiss Jeimas all in dis bitch

Really excited to see what other nations or regions lie outside our beautiful little cowboyland, and all the history behind each city and area. funpowder 4 lyf

I'm pretty sure no one would attempt to make a new language, unless you have that much free time. I am tempted to make an Alphabet tho, but it would just be modeled after the English one tho so :x

Honestly, I'm just focusing on Jeimas itself in that thread since that's already heaps to work with xD
Maybe I'll make another thread for a different nation some time though ^_^

    Very true lol
I have all the time in the world right now and it's not enough time xD

I know Arcanum's history (I was there when you first posted it lol) but that should not and would not apply to you because Latin isn't seen as inspiration anywhere else except the title. So don't be sorry.

That is true. I'm just really picky about names and to me, when Latin's exploited right, it's right. Sadly, imho, a lot of worldbuilders don't have the feel for it to pull it off well.

Plus it's just really overused and takes away a lot of that individual feel you want in a unique world. That's why I just make up a lot of stuff haha

I usually give custom names to my places, but when I feel out of inspiration I often use Icelandic for ideas. Raoga for example is derived from ráðgáta, Icelandic for "mystery".

Speaking of Raoga, expect that here back up soon again. :)

There's a useful quick cheat online to come up with faux-Latin (or faux other language) words and names and such. https://www.risusmonkey.com/p/rosetta-stone.html Put in your sample and then add some text to translate. For instance, some random Latin:
periugulum sinistrum capulo terms gladium totum ei demergit, et sanguinis eruptionem utriculo admoto excipit diligenter, ut nulla stilla compareret usquam : haec ego meis oculis aspexi. Nam etiam, ne quid demutaret, credo, a victimae religione, immissa dextera per vulnus illud ad viscera penitus, cor miseri contubernalis mei Meroe bona scrutata protulit, cum ille impetu teli praesecata gula vocem, immo stridorem incertum per vulnus effunderet et spiritum rebulliret. Quod vulnus qua maxime patebat spongia offulciens Panthia 'Heus tu ' inquit ' Spongia, cave in mari nata per fluvium transeas.' His editis abeunt : remoto grabatulo varicus super faciem meara residentes vesicam exonerant, quoad me urinae spurcissimae madore perluerent.
And the passage you want to "translate":
Mr and Mrs Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much.
And you get some faux-Latin like this:
S ens S Poria, an spollem ciem, Scrimer Vime, nere scrient mo dae vur via nere lerera spargub, vus ei clera tos.
You could also mix languages together for your sample and get weirder results that look more like made up stuff and less like gibberish from a Lorem Ipsum generator. Wikipedia and Google Translate are good places for samples (esp. Translate because it can romanize non-roman languages like Chinese or Russian). Or you could use your own made up language to get more random words that fit your pattern.

    I was really into Latin-based names when I was studying it in high school but now im just like "oh boy that is so obvious yikes". Especially relevant to my old worlds >_>;

I wish I could start presenting my worlds! unfortunately my keyboard broke and I have to wait for the new one to arrive because typing extensively on phone/tablet is ass. :(
