The Great Big Trial Speculation Thread

Considering the reveal of the Photo Club seems to have killed off the likeliness of Gyms coming to Alola, I guess I can say Trials will be back in US/UM and so that's where I figured we should speculate about what could happen with the trials in US/UM.

What new locations do you want trials to be held at? What new Totem Pokemon do you want to see? What tasks would you like to do in the trials? What new Trial Captains and Kahunas do you want to see?

I think that they'll largely stay the same for the most part. I do think that Kommo'o will be using its new Z move.

I can understand where you're coming from, but I personally do think some new trials would freshen things up because if the game is too samey to S/M, people would be annoyed.

I can see them tweaking the way some of them work, but other than that, not much difference. Basically I expect the differences to be akin to those between Gyms in the original pairs versus their third version counterparts.

I want Ryuki as trial captain. Kommo-o remaining a totem pokemon.

Well, for starters, how about giving Mina a trial this time?

Trials are definitely getting more content, because if they were all the exact same the Pokemon fans would be gathering pitchforks and torches. Potential Trial Pokemon were showcased in the first trailer, and Kahili was given focus in the more recent one. Mina was teased in SM already.

I personally hope all of them are a bit more difficult (the Lurantis one was nice, but the Kommo-o one was a bit of a joke), and maybe bumping the captains up a little nudge. But I'm a sucker for difficult stuff, so that's just me :P.

Ryuki as a Trial Captain seems likely as we saw him feature in the trailer, and that would mean we get a proper Dragon trial which I'd be cool with! If Mina doesn't get a more fleshed out trial then I really hope she makes it somewhere as an E4 member or something. As for Kahili, she was showing off a Z-move which means she could be one of the Kahunas? If she is one of the Kahunas then this could still mean her later showing up at the Elite Four giving her more of a role in the storyline outside of the E4 which she should have imo.

I could see Kahili becoming a Kahuna, especially since she is a strong trainer but also too old to be a Trial Captain since they are aged in their teens and have to retire from the role at the age of 20, as dialogue from Mallow in Moon stated.

Ryuki looks like someone I'd like to see as a Trial Captain, since we did have that Totem Kommo-o running wild because of no Trial Captain overseeing it. It would make sense if that Trial Captain turned out to be him.

I would say Kahili, but there is that thing about Trial Captains retiring at 20... But maybe she's younger/right at that age?

If she is a captain, then I'm certain her Trial would be at Ten Carat Hill since she's seen preparing to do a Z-Move dance in what looks like a cave, and Ten Carat Hill is where you find Flynium Z.

I don't think there's any reason to conclude Ryuki, who is explicitly stated to be a visitor from another region, will be a Trial Captain just because he showed up in the trailer, first of all. Same with Kahili; note that we've never had an Elite Four member demoted, and she was introduced as one rather than being promoted from Trial Captain during the game. Her age is also an issue.

Second, I'd like to point out that the trials are one of the main elements of the game - only changing them a little bit would start to defeat the purpose of making new games in the first place. Like the story, expect them to change.

Maybe Nanu stepped aside and Tapu Bulu ended up choosing Kahili as his replacement.

If I remember correctly, during the Elite Four battles Kahili wears the same Z-Ring as Olivia, which likely means she's from Akala Island. I think the only notable Ula'ula resident I could see being a Kahuna would be Molayne or Acerola, since I probably think Sophocles might still be doing the Mount Hokulani trial duties.

The protagonist's recognition was due to an act of heroism. Most of the non-Kahuna characters who got Z-Rings don't seem to look like they were recognised for being a hero.

Hmm this is hard to research as I can't seem to find an accurate list of people with Z rings, but I seem to remember an old man holding Kahili in high regard?
Could just be because she's good at golf :p
