When in doubt, pick up a dictionary/thesaurus. They're your best friends in writing.

Dictionaries are your best friends when it comes to writing, but reading the dictionary is no good of you can't(don't know how to) use the words you've learnt in sentences. The best strategy: always, read plenty of books and check to see words that you do not understand. Sometimes, it helps to check on words that you think you understand, but then you find out it's not what it actually means. Ergo, you've just learnt something new and exciting in the world of literature.
My advice to aspiring writers, Creativity is boundless. Just do whatever comes naturally to you. XD
