So I unplugged our desktop at home...and now when I turn it on, the there's no booting beep and it won't start. :/

Is it just the RAM or boot files? :O

Did I mention how much I hate my laptop? Not only does everything run slowly, but the cooling fan is making the most disconcerting buzzing and grinding noises. I'm quite concerned that the thing is on its last legs :/
Replace the cooling fan and try reinstalling the OS after backing up, see if it's faster.

Could be any number of things. If the BIOS splash screen doesn't appear, it's probably a motherboard issue. If it shows the splash screen, it might be hard drive failure or a corrupted OS installation. Try reinstalling the OS and see if it fixes the problem. Backup with a Live CD first.

It turns on, but just a blank screen.

Motherboard eh? So what do you do with that? D:

My brother (computer technician) said that more than likely you fried your motherboard. Which means, you need to buy a new one and a new power supply. "But why a power supply?" Because it's a short in the power supply that causes the motherboard to fry. If you keep it, then put a new motherboard in, it will fry too.

However, this is based on very little since you haven't really told us anything other than a black screen.

Do lights on your keyboard work? (Caps lock lights, scroll lock lights, etc.)
Is everything plugged in?
Do you see anything flash at all on the monitor when turning it on?

I'd like to add that you will want to find the same kind of motherboard to make it easier (and cheaper, since it can cost $500 at some data recovery places to retrieve data from hard drives that are even only slightly damaged) to retrieve your data.

It's actually tits in a jumper / baskerville / helvetica / too lazy to put effort in / err can't be bothered to think of anything else.

Haha. It's in OT. Every time I have a post count drop, I know it's this thread. XD
