    [PokeCommunity.com] The Legend of Zelda

Legend of Zelda is an action-adventure series developed by Nintendo, and is statistically one of their most popular. This series has kicked off sometime around 1987, and is still currently running. Throughout the years, they've released a bunch of video games, with few of the most well-known being Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess, Phantom Hourglass, and Skyward Sword.

Have you ever played LoZ before? If so, which game did you play? If you're currently playing any, which is it? How are you enjoying it so far? Which game is your most favorite? What makes you like it so much? Of all Zelda games, which one is you least favorite, and why? Are there any sequels that you're looking forward to, to any of these? Use this thread to discuss all that is related to Legend of Zelda!

I've been playing Zelda games since Ocarina of Time. Aside from that, I've also played the original, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Spirit Tracks, Skyward Sword, and A Link Between Worlds. I also have Phantom Hourglass, Minish Cap, Four Swords Anniversary, and Oracle of Seasons on my 3DS, but I have yet to play them, because I'm currently waiting for Hyrule Warriors to come out. Asking for your favorite and least favorite title is a real difficult question, knowing the Zelda fanbase. According to them, our favorite Zelda game is suppose to be the game we grew up with, which for the majority here is Wind Waker since they also grew up with Gen III, and our least favorite Zelda game is suppose to be the game we didn't grew up with. Speaking of favorites and least favorites, famous animator Egoraptor posted his video regarding ALttP and OoT (warning: strong language and around 30 minutes long):

    Spoiler:

For those who don't have any 30 minutes to spare, here's a quick summary of the video:

Egoraptor explains why OoT pales in comparison to ALttP, as well as the original, in terms of exploration and pacing, while also bashing Skyward Sword, and he soon praises ALBW for going back to exploration. The video sparked a lot of controversy, especially on /v/, who calls him out for being terrible at playing games that weren't from the late 80's and early 90's and his lack of skill in game design.

I have been into Zelda since Melee. It's not a Zelda game, but that's what ignited my interest. I used Young Link all the time and loved to read the Zelda trophies I got. Legit, I didn't care about any of the others haha. Anyway, reading about the characters and enemies in the trophies got me really excited, especially about Ocarina of Time. I couldn't wait to explore the world of that game, even if I was late to do so.

My first Zelda game was The Wind Waker which I got on sale for about $20 when I was...I want to say 12 or 13? I remember being in 7th grade, plus it's Player's Choice so it had to have been out a while. And on sale. lol Anyway though, while it's not my absolute favorite, I still really enjoyed it.

The best thing ever happened when my babysitter gave me her copy of Ocarina of Time. I was ecstatic to finally have the game I had longed for, and it didn't disappoint! I didn't actually get through the game til I was 17, but I replayed the first three dungeons all the time. I even made a comic about it! It ends after Link gets the Master Sword, but I did it in a way that worked for someone that didn't want to play through the Forest Temple haha. The Forest Temple scared me idk why it's not THAT bad. Anyway, Ocarina of Time ended up becoming one of my favorite games of all time, sitting right at #3 actually.

I remember being super excited for Twilight Princess as well. I have the GameCube version thankfully. I remember it came out in like...November 06 and I wanted it for Christmas. I couldn't sleep one night so I went to the living room to watch Roseanne and my mom was wrapping presents. She thought none of mine were in sight, but low and behold, I saw it. I saw Twilight Princess sitting out in the open. I started laughing and just left the room and went to bed. I was pumped. lol

I don't have as elaborate stories with other Zelda games, unfortunately. Other Zelda games I own aside from the ones already mentioned include Collector's Edition (The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II: Link's Adventure, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask), Oracle of Ages, The Minish Cap, Skyward Sword, A Link to the Past (GBA and SNES), A Link Between Worlds, Ocarina of Time 3D, and Four Swords Adventure (downloaded on 3DS). I also have two Zelda shirts, a Link plushie (Phantom Hourglass), and Hyrule Historia. Not gonna lie, picking up Hyrule Historia about a week ago has sent me on a big Zelda kick, haha.

OOPS almost forgot favorites and least. My favorite is, of course, Ocarina of Time. I say that not only for its gameplay and such, but just for how hyped I was, and still am, about its world. I always think about how things in the temples worked when Link wasn't there and how Darunia got into the boss room without a boss key (seriously wtf?) and how DEPRESSING it is that the Zoras are frozen. Just things like that. I don't know. I got really invested into OoT's Hyrule before I even looked at that game. Right behind it is Twilight Princess. I know a lot of people don't seem to like it, but I think it has the best and most atmospheric dungeons in the entire series. The music is perfect as well. And wolves. Because wolves. lol

Least favorites...I don't think I have one? Though I will say the DS titles never interested me when I read about them in Nintendo Power and such. So I guess by default, despite not playing them (which makes me feel bad for judging them on articles and not actually playing them), my least favorites are the DS titles. They're just kind of...there? I don't know. :( I'm sure they're fun. But not my cup of tea, I suppose.

One magical evening when I was only a kid, my parents took me and my brother to target and I played the Minish Cap on a display game boy for 2 hours, and ever since then I have loved the series so much. I have played and beaten every Zelda game currently out, and I am quite fond of all of them!

I always loved the Legend of Zelda and I probably always will! My favorite game is Wind Waker, with close follow ups being Majora's Mask and Link to the Past. Wind Waker was always my favorite because of how much ADVENTURE you could have! No matter what your current quest was, you could go explore the massive ocean of possibility and discover new, cool things!

It's hard to put a finger on my least favorite Zelda game, and although a popular opinion might be Skyward Sword, I enjoyed that game a lot, despite it's receptivity. Another favorite for not liking, Zelda II, which I agree with. That game was too confusing and REALLY hard to boot.

I loved the Dynasty Warrior's games, and I am really excited for Hyrule Warrior's! Link between Worlds was such a great game, I'm interested to see how Nintendo is going to one-up themselves!

Yeah, I watched this video and agree with alot of his points. I feel like people are overreacting, about it. The guy just shared his opinion. I am sort of an Egoraptor and Game Grumps fanboy though so my opinion is a little biased.

What's your favourite incarnation of Link?

That's difficult, haha. I don't think there's any Link I dislike, so that just makes this choice more difficult.

I've always been really fond of Young Link in Melee, so my winning spot goes to OoT's Young Link, since that's the Melee represents. I don't know...you have to be pretty damn gutsy to do some of the stuff he does as a kid. Go into a dead tree? Okay. Hot cavern? Sure. A whale? Yeah... Bottom of the well?!?!?! GOD WHY. lol

Honorable mentions to Twilight Princess Link and Skyward Sword Link, though. People think SS Link was the first to show a lot of emotion and expression, but TP Link (actually WW Link really) did that before him. I mean, have you even seen him pick up a Rupee in that game? SO HAPPY! lol SS Link just magnified it. He's so precious.

I'm liking the Link we've seen from Zelda U as well. I'm digging a long-haired Link and the blue clothes. So much, I'm sporting him in my sig! lol I can't wait to see how he is in the game.

Link from the Hyrule Historia manga is pretty badass as well cause he seems to be imprisoned as a bad guy by his people in the beginning. I think I just have a thing for the bad side, though. lol

Let me divide this up a little bit...favorite Links by category.

Most Admirable: OoT/MM Young Link and SS Link
Best Design: Zelda U Link (what we've seen anyway)
    Best Toon Incarnation: WW Link
    Best Alternate Link: Wolf Link
Most Badass Link: HH manga Link

    That's a lot of Links.

What's your favourite incarnation of Link?

It's hard to pinpoint one, but I have to say the one from Wind Waker, because of it's progression through Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, and Spirit Tracks. I also did like the Adult/Young Link from OoT.

Zelda has been part of my life pretty much ever since I got my first game system (excluding the handhelds). The first system I ever got which I could call my very own was a Gamecube at Christmas when I was about 6 years old, and I got Mario Kart: Double Dash and the Zelda Collector's Edition along with it. To be honest, despite the fact that it was only a demo, Wind Waker was what caught my eye on that disk at first, and the only one of the games that I actually spent any time on when I first got it. I reckon it might've been the cartoony look that appealed more to me than the dark and gloomy art style that both OoT and MM had, and the first two Zelda games just looked waay too old for me haha. But yeah, WW got a spot on the wishlist for my birthday, and luckily I also got it :D And as one could guess, it was also the first Zelda game I managed to complete.

After that, I believe Four Swords Adventures was the next game I got. I enjoyed it, but I was a bit disappointed that there wasn't any form of local multiplayer that didn't anything more than just another controller, but oh well. The concept was pretty cool though, and I liked how it gave some new and interesting puzzles. But again, I'm sure it would've been much more fun with multiplayer.

Next game was The Minish Cap, and I really enjoyed that game. I thought it was really fun, and made the whole shrinking aspect work really well into the gameplay. Both in puzzles and with the kinstone "sidequest", and I really enjoyed just looking around to find possible secret areas that I'd missed. While the Earth, Fire and Water/Ice settings are pretty standard for the Zelda series, I believe it was the first time there was a sky setting, which has become a bit of a staple. In any case, I liked the story, the puzzles, the temples, the items, etc., and I would definitely love to see a sequel utilizing the same concept. Unfortunately, I lost this game quite a while. It especially sucks, since it was my favourite at the time ;'(

After that, I got the A Link to the Past port for the GBA, and if I'm gonna completely honest, the game didn't appeal quite that much to me. Don't get me wrong, I still found it fun, but not nearly on the same scale as Wind Waker and Minish Cap. I reckon it might've been because I got so accustomed to the cartoon artstyle of those two games, so going back to the old artstyle, which I again saw as kinda dark and gloomy in comparison; I just didn't like it quite as much. The game definitely took me a while to beat, since the difficulty was quite a bit higher than the previous ones I'd played, and everything wasn't quite as set in stone. Like how you needed to locate an item somewhere in the overworld before you could beat a certain boss. Luckily I've always been a bit of an exploration junkie when it comes to the Zelda games, so I didn't manage to find it beforehand, but yeah. And I often had an extremely hard time with the bosses. One thing I really liked was the length though. I believe it was quite a bit longer than Minish Cap, excluding the post-game elements MC had, so I definitely felt like I got a lot out of it :D

After that, I finally returned to the Collector's Edition, and realised that Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask actually weren't demos, and I managed to play through both games over some time. When I would inevitably get stuck in one game, I'd go to the other and continue/try to figure out how to get past whatever I was stuck at, rinse and repeat. I never actually beat OoT 'because I sucked too much to beat Ganon, and last time I got close to getting through it again, my GC memory card stopped working. So yeah, I don't have any of my save files from the GC games anymore D: But yeah, I did manage to beat MM, and to this day it's actually my favourite Zelda game, solely for the concept and atmosphere it's built all around. I felt like it played really well on the entire doomed feeling, and the fact you couldn't go anywhere without being reminded that the world was close to being destroyed. And overall it was also a fun game, especially the mask sidequests. Both OoT and MM really played with my arachnophobia though, so I still hate them for that :(

Next was Twilight Princess. I'm honestly not quite sure how I feel about this game.I found it fun through the first time I played it, and I remember playing it through again, but I just left it there for a while and didn't return to it for a long time. I reckon it might be due to the temples honestly. I never really liked them too much, but a lot of the pre-temple stuff and just all the story-driven things we had to do. I found them really fun. I wasn't a huge fan of finding the bugs as a wolf, but some of it was fun, like the ones in Kakariko village. So yeah, I found it to be really fun, apart from most of the temples. I especially hated the Ice Mansion one. I did play quite a way through not too long ago, but that was after my memory card stopped working, and once I eventually reached the snow area, I honestly lost interest. And I couldn't ever pick up on it, since I had no way to save it D: But yeah, once I get a working memory card again, I might play through it again.

Last game was Skyward Sword, and honestly, I'm really confused here. I enjoyed it a whole lot while playing it through the first time, but I just haven't been able to play through it again. I reckon it might be all the cutscenes. I really enjoyed the story the first time around, but now that I know it and everything they explain, I feel like they're honestly just dragging the game out. And I can't just skip them, because that's exclusive to Hero Mode, and that means I have to play through the game on a harder difficulty, which I'm honestly not interested in. So so far, I haven't even made it past the first temple on a second playthrough :/

But that's about it. I definitely need a Wii U for the next Zelda game. I already went through the experience of missing every single DS and 3DS release there was, I don't want to do the same with the Wii U :[

Olli, I'm so glad I'm not the only one that's gonna be writing walls of texts in this thread. lol

How about bosses! Do you guys have any favourite LoZ bosses?

Oh goodness, I have a few - If you've played Legend of Zelda, the Twlight Princess, I hope that you'll agree with me that the bosses there are really epic. Like, Aragorok, the Twilght Dragon, he was an epic boss fight, due to the fact that you constantly have to be in the air with your double switch hook, and you can literally just stab him in the back; aaah, so epic. <33

Soft spots have to go to Voloviga, from Ocarina of Time too. He was tough at first because I didn't understand his pattern and he dealt waaay too much damage, but, he's really cool to fight, and gods, they sell him pretty well, as a dragon that was awakened by the evil king, and now it threatens to eat all the Gorons? Oh gods.

How about bosses! Do you guys have any favourite LoZ bosses?

Bosses stress me out SO much, haha. Anyway though, my favorite boss fight is Fyrus from Twilight Princess. He's actually a good guy taken over by the Fused Shadow. I praise TP for being so atmospheric and really making everything feel so real. I always felt like I myself was Link, especially during this boss fight. I spent most of the boss fight hiding behind pillars because I was actually afraid of him seeing me. And yes, he'll actually be unable to see you and wander around the arena looking for you, haha. The scale of that fight is incredible, too. Fyrus is enormous and chases you around and it's terrifying! It really puts you into the game. He's actually an easy boss, but still really scary. He has a right to be easy though; he's only the second boss. lol I mainly like this battle for the scale, music, and the details like him searching for you if you hide. I think that was a great touch.

And let's not forget the music.

I liked the heck out of Wind Waker's fight against the Helmaroc King. But as I've only played WW...

How about bosses! Do you guys have any favourite LoZ bosses?

My downright favorite thing about Zelda! Bongo Bongo and Twinrova from OoT are really fun, as well as the twin worms in Majora's Mask. My favorite Zelda boss would probably be Gohdan from the Wind Waker. I always enjoyed that fight so much whenever I would replay the game. I also liked alot of the bosses in Twilight Princess, which were all really creative.

I'll have to go with the Cel-Shaded Link, or Toon Link as he's referred to in Smash Bros., because of the ridiculous facial expressions he makes.

How about bosses! Do you guys have any favourite LoZ bosses?

Oh I most certainly do. Koloktos from Skyward Sword and Stallord from Twilight Princess are my favorites due to how you battle these guys.

I really love these video games. I really only started playing them 3 years ago so I never got to experience them as kids, which is kind of a shame but whatever. I posted about this in another thread, but one of the best feelings for me was completing OOT and realizing there was an entire new set of amazing games that I could start playing like immediately since by the time 2011 was over dozens of Zelda games were in existence already.

I love puzzles. I love adventure. I love games with no levels. I love it when games have a bunch of sidequests. I love nice plots. I love awesome side characters, and weird mechanics like turning into a wolf or hitching a ride with your friend who is also basically a bird. I love how all the games are pretty different in setting when compared to each other and within themselves (all the areas in SS managed to be pretty different, even the areas you had to return to). Ugh, I just love this series lol. Twilight Princess is my favorite, I've played it like 3 times which isn't a lot but I guess it kinda is when you consider I really only have the weekends (-Sunday for HW) and summer to play, but during those times 4 other people also want to use the same TV as I do. Skyward Sword is close second, tied with OOT, and would have been a clear second (maybe first!) if it had TP's fighting mechanics because the Wii Motion Plus was an absolute pain. TP Link is my favorite of all of them, and WW Link is second because they managed to give so much personality to a guy who never really talks.

Favorite boss? Aragorok from Twilight Princess. That fight was so awesome. I remember feeling that awesomeness when I beat him for the first time. Not like TP is my favorite game or anything... but the bosses were really great. Fyrus gets second place. Blizzetta and Stallord tie for third. Ugh. I can't pick lol. Tentalus gets honorable mention for not being an absolute pain in the ass due to WMP to take down, and so does Phantom Ganon in OOT because that fight was fun.

So I've found this interesting article regarding poll results from the LoZ fandom: https://nintendo3dsdaily.com/ninten...surveys-zelda-fans-interesting-results-found/

It's a pretty interesting read, and it really shows how the fans feel about the series as of now, including the art style, combat system, and puzzles.

Wow, I am really suprised the TP art style was more appreciated than WW. I agree with the masses on most of those polls, I think Zelda is going in a great direction!

I'm afraid I don't have nearly as much as experience as some of y'all do with this series, but I'll still tell mine.

I just love the puzzles and the dungeons in the game. It's not short levels like Mario or turn based battles like Pokemon, it's combat combined with exploration combined with collecting, it's great. I've only played four games in this series, so there's not much to elaborate on, but I'll try.

My first game was Ocarina of Time on the 3DS. I got it merely because of a Youtuber I liked at the time who was doing a play through of it. I instantly loved it. Experiencing a Zelda game for the first time is an experience I'd pay anything for again. The bosses and the dungeons were great, even when I go back and play again and I already know how to defeat them. Experiencing going through these dungeons and trying to find my way through, and then being scared by things like Wallmasters is great.

Then came Four Swords Adventure. I...honestly don't remember much of this game, and I haven't played it recently. It...certainly wasn't my favorite, but not too bad.

Then came Skyward Sword. I don't know why, but this is my least favorite. I don't hate it, but it just seems....dull, I guess. None of the new weapons were that great to me, and I don't find that it has a compelling replay ability.

Link Between a Worlds is my favorite though. There's so much to explore and it didn't feel so linear like Skyward Sword. And you could do the dungeons in a variety of orders, and get the weapons whenever you needed them. Absolutely great.

I'm looking forward to the game for the Wii U. We've seen not that much, but the over world looks pretty nice. I'm also hoping for a 3DS remake of Majora's Mask, because what I've seen of it is great and I would like to experience it as well.

My favorite 3D Zelda is Majora's Mask, and my favorite 2D is the Minish Cap. I liked ALttP, don't get me wrong, but the graphics were a little lacking. I like what Capcom did with their games, including Seasons/Ages. I'm actually playing through OoT again for the millionth time hahaha... trying to see if I can find all the skulltulas and heart pieces without a guide.

The Zelda game creators really seem to know what they are doing, too. If I recall correctly, at E3 we were told that one of the main focuses of the next Zelda was to create a huge world to explore, and pointed out that the mountains way in the distance are reachable. This lines up exactly with the poll in the link Pinkie Dawn posted, and I don't know if it's a coincidence or not.
