Pokemon Ruby Bug Monotype Update 1:

Spoiler:

-Did the early game stuff, chose Mudkip as a starter even though it doesn't matter.
-Spent an hour and a half searching before eventually finding my first Pokemon for my team: a Surskit. Named him "Cappy".
-While training Cappy, the second wild Pokemon I encountered was... another Surskit.

Figures.

-Went through Route 101, training Cappy.
-Did stuff in Petalburg.
-Progressed through Rustboro, hoping Cappy would become somewhat useful.
-Immediately after entering Rustboro, went west to capture my next Pokemon: a Nincada nicknamed "Naruto".
-Fought the trainers I could, leveling my team.
-Lost to Roxanne a few times before winning with the help of copious X Defense on Naruto. Probably the longest gym battle I've ever fought.
-Left the gym and was confronted by a man in a suit asking me to find his goods.
-I found his goods and beat up some poor guy's dog to get them back.
-Story stuff happened.
-I ended up in Dewford Town.
-After barely beating the gym trainers and losing 7 times to Brawly, I grinded until Naruto evolved.
-Naruto, now a Ninjask, swept Brawly with fury cutter.
-Got through Granite Cave
-More stuff happened
-I ended up catching a Volbeat after getting to Mauville and naming him Malcolm (props if you get the reference)
-After a few tries (seriously, paralysis sucks), I managed to beat Wattson.

At this point, Naruto is my MVP by far. I was worried at first that having a Shedinja would break the challenge, but Husk is turning out to be super unreliable because of the sheer number of Pokemon I've been encountering with shit like Supersonic, and Speed Boost, coupled with a decent attack stat, has been a godsend, making him a pseudo sweeper. He's won me all 3 gym badges so far, and while I somehow doubt that trend will continue with the next one, I can only see him getting better in the future. I already mentioned Husk, and once I get the TM for Taunt he will definitely become a bit better, but his myriad weaknesses make him a very niche Pokemon. Malcolm... I can't really tell yet, but it seems like he's going to end up being mostly a utility Pokemon. I can say that Confuse Ray at this level is nice though. Cappy... kinda sucks, but once he gets Bubblebeam and evolves that's definitely going to change.

By the way, I'm completely terrified about what facing Flannery will be like.

Team Magma's evil schemes have finally been put to an end! Crobat destroyed Groudon, because **** that guy's typing, I can't use that. Also, he's a legendary. Wallace was easy enough, I think Swellow and Pelipper handled him.
The E4 was fun, and Skarmory totally stole the show! I was expecting Altaria, easily one of my more awesome Pokémon and with great coverage, to shine, but Skarmory completely outshone Altaira.
Against Sidney, Swellow scouted out and defeated Mightyena, so Crobat didn't have to deal with Intimidate. Crobat then took out the rest of his team.
Skarmory almost took out all of Phoebe's Pokémon, but eventually succumbed to Curse, after which Xatu took over.
Skarmory and Altaria took out Glacia in a team effort.
Pelipper tore Drake's team apart, but eventually, Altaria had to step in and finish it.
And finally, Altaria took out Steven's Skarmory. When he sent out Aggron, I switched in to Skarmory, expecting him to go down and then bring in Altaria later. Skarmory was able to set up to +6 attack and then completely annihilate his team. Skarmory RULES.
Oh, and I forgot, there was a final battle with May afterwards. Altaria took out her entire team.

I tried to keep this mono-Flying team all birds, but I couldn't resist using Crobat. She's fast and hits hard, what more can you ask for? Loved using Crobat... again.

Pelipper, lv. 59 w/ Mystic Water

- Rain Dance
- Hurricane
I don't think I've ever had a Pelipper against the E4 here. Pelipper is super weird, but of course Surf came in handy travelling around Hoenn without using an HM slave. Surf, Ice Beam and Hurricane also provided surprisingly good coverage.

Swellow, lv. 58 w/ Lax Incense
Female // Adamant // Guts

- U-turn
As soon as the moveset was complete, Swellow turned out to be a beast. Fast and hits fairly hard. If nothing else, she has some strong moves. For a while, she was the token Fly slave, until I got the Eon Flute. For a generic bird, Swellow is pretty awesome.

Altaria, lv. 63 w/ Rocky Helmet

Altaria was fun. Dragons are always fairly strong, but Altaria is more defensive, something I didn't utilize at all. Having had a physical Altaria might've been better because of Dragon Dance, but still, this one had some really great coverage and with a little bit of over-leveling, she certainly hit hard enough.

Xatu, lv. 58 w/ King's Rock

Xatu is super weird, as well. Loved using this guy, he won some great battles, and was the first one to have the moveset I wanted for him. Like some of the others, it doesn't have particularly awesome stats, but so what? It's fast enough and powerful enough, and it was fun to use.

Skarmory, lv. 58 w/ Hard Stone

MVP for sure. Tanks hits like nothing else, is able to set up patiently and then just wreck stuff. I settled for Jolly, because Skarmory are kinda rare, and I didn't want to soft reset forever, but I think it actually helped me outspeed some key opponents, especially against the E4. It's not something I know for sure, but he did outspeed a few that I didn't think he would. Besides, this isn't competitive, I could've settled for Modest and still have won. Anyway, point is - Skarmory rules.

1. Started the game with a girl named G.
2. Got the Turtwig.
3. Did the pre-game story etc etc.
4. Captured a Budew and evolved Turtwig
5. Proceeded to Oreburgh where I destroyed Roark.
6. Destroyed Team Galactic in Floaroma Town.
7. Tried raising the Budew in an effort to evolve it in the Eterna Forest. Not really happening.
8. Defeated Gardenia with Bite Grotle.
9. Took on the Team Galactic Hideout, evolving Grotle to Torterra.
10. Conquered the bike route and Mt. Coronet.
11. Captured a Roselia in the Route before Hearthome. Ditched the Budew.
12. Trained said Roselia in gym. Switching to Bite Torterra is the optimal strategy.
13. Defeated Fantina.
14. En route to Veilstone. So far, grass-types are scarce.

Thought I would put out another update on my bug monotype. I'll have another update sometime within the next few days.

Spoiler:

-Went North after beating Wattson. Along the way, Cappy learned Bubblebeam and I finally let it evolve into Masquerain.
-Decided to teach Shock Wave to Malcolm via TM.
-Found out that Team Magma had some sort of meteorite from Meteor Falls. Headed to Mt. Chimney.
-At Mt. Chimney, I beat up Team Magma and took the Meteorite back.
-Headed to Lavaridge.

FLANNERY: The battle with Flannery was surprisingly less difficult than I had expected. Cappy's Bubblebeam oneshot both Slugmas, and I switched into Malcolm to fight Torkoal. As a Water Sport was out, Overheat did less damage (first time I can ever say that move ever did something useful for me) and allowed me to confuse it and whittle it's health down with Shock Wave. However, all good things must come to an end and Attract plus a few lucky hits took Malcolm down. I ended up losing almost all of my team and having to revive Cappy. Fortunately, Bubblebeam finished the job and I earned my fourth gym badge.

-Received the go-goggles from May.
-In the desert, grabbed the Claw Fossil. Traveled to Rustboro to revive it into my fifth team member, an Anorith I named Scampi.
-Trained in the desert and in the Trick House before returning to Petalburg.

NORMAN: This was a difficult battle. Faint Attack prevented Husk from doing anything (yet again), so I was down to Naruto, Cappy, Malcolm, and an underleveled Anorith. Cappy was obliterated in one hit by a Facade, so I switched to Malcolm to use Confuse Ray and hope for the best. Incredibly, Malcolm's new move Signal Beam plus some insane luck with confusion took down the first Slaking. However, Vigoroth managed to land a critical hit on Malcolm and take him out. Switching to Naruto, I set up with a Swords Dance hoping for something that wasn't a crit, and I was hit by a Facade that did far less damage than I expected. After Speed Boost did it's thing, I oneshot Vigoroth with a crit of my own on Fury Swipes. However, all good things must come to an end and Naruto was demolished by Slaking. Down to Scampi and my HM slave, I sent in Scampi and hoped that the resistance to Normal would help me. Amazingly, Norman decided to be an idiot and repeatedly try to hit me with Focus Punch. This allowed me to, in a nutshell, win.

-Got the HM for surf.
-Am now currently on my way to Fortree.

I said previously that Naruto was my MVP; Unfortunately, that isn't so anymore. Having Fury Swipes and Fury Cutter as your only offensive moves kind of sucks, and luckily I'm close to getting Slash. Husk still kind of sucks, and is only useful in certain situations. I'm definitely sticking with using it though. Cappy has probably taken over as my MVP, Bubblebeam is an incredibly useful move and Intimidate as an ability is great in a monotype where your type is weak to just about everything. Malcolm has been pleasantly surprising so far, with a diverse movepool and unusually decent stats. I can't really tell how Scampi will be throughout, but I expect him to become far stronger than he is now once he evolves into Armaldo.

1. Defeated Maylene. It was harder than expected.
2. Went south and defeated Crasher Wake. It was MUCH harder than expected simply because I don't have any healing items and I can't seem to OHKO Gyarados.
3. Did the small side-quest for the Galactic Grunt
4. Went to Celestic Town and got Surf.
5. Went to Canalave and defeated Byron by spamming EQ.
6. Trained with Riley.
7. Got the Shiny Stone in Iron Island and evolved Roselia.
8. Conquered the Galactics in the lakes.
9. Went north to Snowpoint.
10. Caught a Snover.
11. Had a difficult time with Candice since Froslass' Blizzard OHKOs everybody. However, four rematches later and one lucky Blizzard miss, I got the seventh badge.
