  • Ultimate Monotype Challenge: Grass

    HeartGold

    Badges: 16/16 + RED

    Progress Report:

    1. Defeated Janine with Meganium's EQ and Exeggutor's Psychic.
    2. Went back to Brock. Destroyed him cause rock<<grass.
    3. Defeated Blaine. EQ worked wonders although I had to use full restores.
    4. Defeated Blue quite easily.
    5. Started grinding for Red. I knew I had to level up my mons to at least 85 so they will survive.
    6. Stocked up on Revives and Full Restores.
    7. Pikachu went down easy with Victreebel's Leaf Blade.
    8. Charizard not so much. Took down Sunflora and Tentacool (my HM slave) with Flare Blitz. Meganium survived another Flare Blitz which bought Charizard down to red-yellow border health because of the recoil. One Rock Climb and it's over.
    9. Lapras was next. I can't do anything except stall with Full Restore because Blizzard is always bringing my mon down to red. Once Blizzard was gone, it's only a matter of EQ/Iron Tail from Meganium.
    10. Venusaur was easy although it managed to OHKO Victreebel with Sludge Bomb. Exeggutor lived a Sludge Bomb and OHKOed with a Psychic.
    11. Snorlax ALSO HAS BLIZZARD so same tactic. This one was a little bulkier but I still did it.
    12. Blastoise was simply a Leaf Blade from Victreebel.

DONE! Off to Omega Ruby. Although I already started it when my PC broke. I'm at the seventh gym now. Will be posting one huge massive update tomorrow or maybe later.

    Spoiler:

Fun fact: It turns out my Piplup was Impish. The Abra I caught turned out to be Impish as well. The Psyduck and Bidoof I caught to use as HM slaves were also Impish. Even funnier, both Meditite AND Chingling were Impish as well. So was the Bronzor I caught. Later on, when I went hunting for a male Ralts, the one I managed to catch was Impish as well. And guess what.... the Eevee I obtained from Bebe was ALSO Impish. Bare in mind, I didn't sit around trying to match the natures or anything (proof being the Bibarel I caught on Route 208 who happened to break the Impish curse and be Quirky). This is an odd occurrence for me and I swear, I almost thought my game had been tampered with (since I bought a used game). Hence the title of "Queen of the Impish"

    Beat the Elite 4!

Ive probably done a grass monotype run 10 times by now, but never posted it. Love the Grass type, despite its numerous weaknesses, simply because the move pools can be so diverse (plus I love moves that recover health: Leech Seed, Giga Drain, Ingrain, etc.). The team was great. Sceptile has always been my starter so I knew how to use him. Breloom, who Im currently doing a solo run with, was fantastic, and became my strongest team member. Ludicolo was nice for type advantage, though im not a huge fan of him. Cacturne was pretty average, I enjoyed using him. Cradily was like Ludicolo, nice for type advantage though Im not sure if I'd ever use her again. Tropius, who for so long now has been one of my favorite pokemon (typing. design) was the worst one yet. Yeah flying moves gave me an advantage over grass and bug, but in the late game when I got him, there wasnt many of those, so I rarely used him and he wasnt that strong.

Now, that psychic run through on Ruby is getting restarted and done on Sapphire instead. Will post soon with updates!

    10. Captured Oddish.
    11. Grinded a few and proceeded to Mauville to defeat Watson.

    16. Gained access to the sandstorm area. Deposited Gloom and Nuzleaf for good.
    17. Captured a Cacnea and Lileep.
    18. Went back to Petalburg and defeated Norman. Breloom's Mach Punch worked wonders.

Since it has been a while since i last took this challenge (And don't have the cartridge by hand for the one i forgot halfway through) i decided to take on Kanto Ice.... on a 400% speed emulator in one sitting. :P Here is the result:

    Forum User Name: Jespoke
    Pokémon Type: Ice
    Challenge Mode: Single
    Game(s): Fire Red

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FIre Red - Ice challenge start to finish:

    - Started the game as Baby (Ice Ice...)
    - Based my rival's starter on my Trainer ID
    - Picked my hacked starter Merps the Shellder
    - Played the opening
    - Realized Shellder is 1) not Ice type yet 2) doesn't learn water-STAB on its own 3) focuses physical Attack but only has Tackle for a physical move
    - Brock down!
    - Met a guy with a Magnemite in Mt Moon, had no chance. Rekt by Magnemite count: 1
    - Learned Aurora Beam, game suddenly 10x easier
    - Got TM Secret Power, no longer walled by water types
    - Misty down!
    - Water Pulse finally gives me STAB, though Secret Power is still better
    - Find another guy with a Magnemite. Rekt by Magnemite count: 2
    - Skipping Lt. Surge for now for fear of Magnemite.
    - Rock Tunnel cost almost all my PP, even without fighting the wild
    - Rushed to get the Silph Scope, Kangaskhan was really scary
    - Cruised through the Pokemon Tower
    - Got past Snorlax to get a Super Rod
    - Fished up a lv 30 Poliwhirl, caught it, and traded it for Zynx the Jynx
    - Intended to feed Erika's gym to Jynx, but it wouldn't obey me until i beat said Gym.
    - Erika down!
    - Snuck into Silph Co., Jynx soloed my rival and i got ADWCTA the lv 25 Lapras
    - Got SURF!!!
    - Beat a bazillion trainers including Sabrina and Koga
    - Surfed all over Blaine
    - Sevii Islands bla bla.
    - 8th gym still locked........ I forgot to go back to Surge
    - Drowned Lt Surge
    - Giovanni is cake for Lapras
    - Rival, Victory Road, Elite 3 + Bruno, Champion,
    - Beat the game!

    Team:

ADWCTA, lv 59 Lapras Lategame MVP
    lapras.png

Surf, Body Slam, Ice Beam, Hydro Pump
"His ability to tank stuff was rarely relevant because of how overleveled i was, but towards the end every big highlight was ADWCTA beating stuff that could 1-shot the others"
    Highlight stats: HP,Sp Def

    Zynx, lv 60 Jynx
    jynx.png

Psychic, Ice Punch, Thief, Calm Mind
"Swept a lot of big battles including the start of E4, but her abysmal Defense betrayed her and left the hardest 2 battles entirely up to the others."
    Highlight stats: Sp Atk, Speed

    Merps, lv 58 Cloyster
    cloyster.png

Ice Beam, Surf, Secret Power, Double Edge
"Secret Power was the hidden MVP, being a vital asset that let Merps carry his solo part of the adventure much better than he would have otherwise. He had a lull when the other two came to power, but had his moments lategame thanks to his awesome Defense and good(nature boosted) Speed"
    Highlight stat: Defense

    DONE

    Progress:
    1. Went to Sootopolis to try and save the world.
    2. Did so with a Masterball. I am not wasting any time with Groudon lol.
    3. Defeated Wallace. Grass >> Water
    4. Proceeded to Victory Road.
    5. Grinded hard inside just to prep myself.
    6. Upon reaching the Pokemon League, went to spend all my money on Full Restores and Revives.
    7. Started to do the E4. Defeat is okay as long as I get experience.
    8. Had zero difficulty with E4, except maybe for Glacia's Froslasses. Get owned hard by Steven.
    9. Retraced back to get some useful TMs (Return and Dragon Claw) and get the Shiny Stone for Roselia and Leaf Stone for Nuzleaf.
    10. Evolved each of them.
    11. Did the E4 again and re-challenged Steven.
    12. Cradily barely managed to stop Skarmory using HP Fire and Stone Edge.
    13. Claydol is simply a Leaf Blade away.
    14. Aggron is Brick Broken.
    15. Cradily is more difficult. It took Cradily's own Brines, Breloom's Brick Break, and Roselia's Sludge Bomb to take it out.
    16. X-Scissor Armaldo is beast. I managed to take it out by wearing it down by many attacks and using Revives and Full Restores in between.
    17. Surprisingly, Cacturne survived a Bullet Punch from a M-Metagross and brought it HP down to red with a Dark Pulse. One Sucker Punch later, I beat the game.

Turning my grass monotype into an Ultimate Monotype challenge.

    Name: ElectricN
    Type: Grass
    Regions Completed: 1 (Hoenn)
    Next Up: Kanto

Using a sped up emulator makes this go so much faster. Started today and already have 4 badges. I really do love Grass Pokemon because their movepools are so diverse. Venusaur is solid, and just got Giga drain after defeating Erica. Ive never cared for Parasect, but dang, its good, with a solid move pool even for Gen 3. Vileplume is decent, though right now it doesnt have 1 very strong move, but makes do with what it has. Still have to catch Tangela and Exeggcutor, then the team will, and Ill get to it right after I beat Sabrina, as I just took down team Rocket at Silph.

    Team:

    Bruteroot (Venusaur) M LVL 39
    003.png

    Giga Drain
    Poison Powder
    Razor Leaf
    Leech Seed

    Incrab (Parasect) F LVL 40

    Thief
    Slash
    Aerial Ace
    Leech Life

    Floxic (Vileplume) F LVL 38
    045.png

    Absorb
    Moonlight
    Poison Powder

Will update again when Im done!

    and Done!

Wooh! Has to be my quickest challenge ever (1 day). Thank god for the increased speed emulator, otherwise this wouldve taken me awhile.

I always found the first gen to be the hardest, and this was no different. Most of the gym leaders werent terrible, in fact I dont think I lost to any. However, almost every rival battle I struggled with, because of that stupid Fire Flying Charizard. Each time I ran into him for like th last 3 sets, I lost. Finally just had to keep Vileplume alive long enough to use a Toxic and then just keep reviving and potioning until it fainted. Plus, I did a solid amount of grinding right before the elite just to face my rival at the end.
This gen with grass is definitely more difficult than 3rd gen, not counting the actual game, just because the grass pokemon are a lot more limited. Hoenn grass types have all these wonderful duo species (Water, Flying, Dark, Fighting) where as here, I only had poison (whos only advantage was to grass...) a bug (yet again, very limited advantages) and then thankfully a psychic. Still love Venusaur, and tried a different set with him that I liked. Vileplume did its job with Toxic, but not much else. Parasect had a fantastic attack that came in handy, along with being able to use diverse moves. Exeggutor was my go to with psychic, definitely my strongest attack. Tangela didnt do much...basically its purpose was to use mega drain when Venusaur ran out of Giga drain for solid Grass attacks.

    Trainer Green's Team:

    Bruteroot (Venusaur) M LVL 65
    003.png

    Giga Drain
    Sunny Day
    Solar Beam
    Earthquake

    Incrab (Parasect) F LVL 63

    Thief
    Slash
    Aerial Ace
    Giga Drain

    Floxic (Vileplume) F LVL 62
    045.png

    Petal Dance
    Moonlight
    Toxic
    Acid

    Triopical
    (Exeggutor) M LVL 63

    Hypnosis
    Egg Bomb
    Leech Seed
    Psychic

    Vinegheist
    (Tangela) M LVL 59
    114.png

    Sleep Powder
    Mega Draun
    Tickle
    Double-Edge

Will be moving on to another region (either Jhoto of Unova, which I cant speed up on an emulator) but may take a break to work on other challenges for the moment.

EDIT: Speaking of which, heres my Psychic AS update.

VERY slow start, took forever to train up Ralts to beat Roxanne. Also a lot of set up with team aqua and everything, then Mr Stone and Steven. Finally caught an Abra before it could teleport, and then trained that with the EXP Share, which also took forever, as I beat Brawley, then fought Team Aqua again. Then, thanks to the fantastic Pidge14, I was able to trade my newly evolved Kadabra to get Alakazam and received a dawn stone to evolve my newly evolved Kirlia into Gallade. Im currently outside Mauville and imagine the game will progress quicker, now that I already have 2 fully evolved Pokemon before the 3rd gym. Will update again soon!
