[Discussion] The Monotype Discussion Thread

I'm going to be a bit delayed with my monotype updates because I'll be busy playing Age of Mythology: Retold and Devalue's archipelago event over the next couple weeks.

I don't want to get into my depression, so I'll just say I've been distracted from finishing the video that was supposed to be released almost a week ago on 30 August. I hope to release it on Saturday the 14. It wouldn't necessarily take that long, but dates are important to me, so I don't want to release the game next Wednesday (I don't want to explain why), and I have something going on on Thursday and Friday of next week, so there's that. (When I get the video done, then I'll write up an abridged report for the "No Evolution" thread.)

Does anyone know if USUM penalizes screwing around with the clock? With GSC emulation, mGBA adjusts the in-game clock based on the computer's time with the occasional "Oh, no, the clock is not set" as the only penalty. I understand the appeal of UM having the time of day reversed, but seeing the daytime cutscenes at IRL night time is kind of jarring. I don't feel that way about the opposite. Moreover, I'd like more night time cutscenes in the YouTube video if I get to it next October. Has anyone tried this? Does anyone know? "Just Google it"? Sorry, but I can no longer rely on Google for questions that involve too many words and/or keywords. Google stinks now.

Affects Poke Pelago timers and some of the Festival Plaza stuff. Apparently only lasts for a day, according to GameFAQs answers. (Thought it was a full week. Could be wrong. Ran into this kind of stuff when adjusting for Daylight Savings Time.) Would not be surprised if some daily things like Pyukumuku Chucking were delayed too. Other than that? No.

I've kind of done goofed in such a way that I'm currently at a loss of what to do. I've got a lot of footage for the monotype video series recorded up to Challenge #5 in Ruby/Sapphire (about 90% complete with the fifth challenge), Challenge #2 in FRLG (about 20% complete with the second challenge), etc, but the problem is that it's not as fun rewatching old footage when I script. It'd be a lot better if I was scripting while doing each challenge. I will probably wait until the first video is 100% done and uploaded before I make a big decision (because two YouTuber friends have urged me to wait until this video is done), but I need to handle scripting a lot better in the future. Starting with the Water Monotype challenge of Ruby/Sapphire, I will probably try scripting as I go along with each future challenge, which might result in some early installment weirdness in the Ground Monotype video and then again in later scripts (like the FRLG Flying Monotype video).

I'd appreciate advice on this, but I don't expect any because it's a super uncommon problem. My YouTuber friends [not that they're "internet famous"] really don't want me to have to scrap everything and start over next year with new footage, and I'd really rather not do that either. I will release the first video when it's done. I want to include information from Bulbapedia and side notes on the right sidebar (because the video is 16:9 and the GBA screen isn't that wide). I just don't know when the first video will be done.

NOTE: I will resume making updates on these threads as per forum rules; I just haven't been playing the challenges lately because I've been playing other games. I recently started my first FPS game (yes, I played my first FPS at age 27), so I could join some friends in a Lethal Company livestream on Twitch. I just wanted to give an update after saying "This is the deadline I set for myself" and then disappearing. Plus, I've been stressing about it, and I needed to vent I guess.

I'm not really sure what advice to give in this situation; I'm not a youtuber and haven't even watched a let's play in years, so I'm not sure what's going on with scripts and stuff. That being said, it's completely fine to take a break; I'm in the middle of one right now for a couple RTS games.

You might reach out to some of the more well-known Poketubers that are out there. See if they have some suggestions. The burnout can be real at times, and they are probably better suited to help you than those of us not doing it. I mean, I watch a lot of them, but I'm definitely not able to really give any ideas on how to best script.

At the risk of sounding rude, Stenir, I really doubt I'd get a reply from someone like (I don't know) JPR of YouTube fame. The popular Poketubers probably get hundreds of comments a day, and YouTube doesn't recommend me mid-size or "small with a dedicated fanbase" Poketubers for reasons that are... complicated... and beyond the scope of this thread. I did ask an internet game reviewer with some thousands of subs for advice via Twitter DMs, and that went well, but today, I was kind of just stressed out and in need of venting. I said, "I'd appreciate advice on this, but I don't expect any because it's a super uncommon problem." Maybe I could've formatted the message in such a way that the words "I'd appreciate advice" weren't the first of a new paragraph, and that's on me.

Having said all that, I feel like maybe my previous message was a bit too melodramatic for this thread, and I apologize for that. Not to pull the "I suffer from anxiety, so it's okay for me to be rude" card, but I do suffer from mental illnesses that cloud my judgement at times. I could have probably just said something like, "I'm still taking a break, and I'm not sure when I'll give a proper update." I can't change the past, but perhaps I should take note and learn from this.

Now that the Archipelago is finished and some real-life stuff is out of the way, I have time to return to my Platinum's postgame. I'm probably not going to fight the E4/Cynthia rematch in this game, since all they have is boosted levels, and on Cynthia, movesets that are slightly worse against my team. It's not worth grinding for when I'll have largely the same experience as my first fight with them. Instead, my goal will be to beat every Gym Leader rematch and Stat Trainer battle at the Battleground, at which point I'll move on to my next run.

EDIT: Everyone's beaten. I'll post my postgame update tomorrow morning; it's too late to finish typing my update tonight.

If anybody has any suggestions, I'm all for it...I'm stuck with my Ghost run in Sapphire just grinding like there's no tomorrow. I'm pretty certain I've done about 60% of my run time just grinding in Victory Road. Currently at 31h41m...and still trying to make it through the Elite Four.

Here's my team as of posting...though I'm still grinding probably up to 60:
L56 Shedinja - Shadow Ball / Double Team / Fury Cutter / Dig - 1 / 136 / 76 / 58 / 49 / 78
L57 Sableye - Rock Smash / Aerial Ace / Feint Attack / Shadow Ball - 132 / 113 / 115 / 91 / 89 / 100
L56 Banette - Shadow Ball / Screech / Shock Wave / Night Shade - 172 / 161 / 95 / 102 / 86 / 113
L53 Dusclops - Shadow Ball / Curse / Pursuit / Earthquake - 118 / 94 / 151 / 96 / 150 / 50

Took me a while to get past Sidney (Dark). Phoebe's (Ghost) easy enough to Knock Out, but my two problems are definitely Sidney and Glacia (Ice). I can get through Sidney about 2/3 of the time. I basically use Banette to Screech a few times to be able to take out Mightyena. Both Cacturne and Shiftry are why I have Aerial Ace on Sableye. I definitely have to keep Shedinja out of the first two battles, unfortunately. I'm going to keep looking for options, but at the moment, I'm just tired of doing the grind.

I'm not entirely sure this needs to be said, but just in case, I've not been in the mood for Pokémon lately. I've been kind of disinterested in video games in general the last week. I've been trying to combat this and play the new Sonic X Shadow Generations on PS5, but I'm often just not feeling it. It's almost certainly a symptom of my clinical depression.

I was actually wondering if I need to leave any sort of update in the "No Evolution Challenge" thread. I don't think I do since there's been one other person interested in the challenge (a forum moderator, I think). I should still be active to answer questions regarding advice on how to go through the Gen I, II, and III games if someone asks, but I don't think I can participate right now.

I'm hoping to feel better and get back in the groove next month, but I cannot promise anything. It could take until early 2025 for me to return. I just don't know right now.

Try running Brick Break on Sableye, since it's a much stronger Fighting-type move than Rock Smash and can hit both Sidney and Glacia's entire teams for super-effective damage.

No worries, Cosmic - I think we've all been there. We're all here for ya.

I swapped out Rock Smash for Brick Break, and then also decided to upgrade Shock Wave to Thunderbolt. First test is nice on Thunderbolt, as it OHKOs Sharpedo. My Sableye is not powerful enough to one shot Glacia's team, but a mix of that and Shadow Ball work. I'll keep adjusting it to try and get through. Thanks for the idea!

I'll be posting my Sinnoh completion tonight, but I went ahead and started over the weekend on Unova...with a Yamask. Oh jeez that's a painful start. Looking for thoughts...here's what I have had to do.

Up to Route 2, I basically have two choices: run from everything or Struggle Strats. I prefer the first. But what I did ahead of time was pick up some Lillipup so I have some chances at Pickup. I have Yamask, which only knows Astonish to attack until L13 when it gets Night Shade. This means I can only either do Struggle Strats, or fight Purrloin. The first required trainer on Route 2, I have to go Struggle Strats, but they also know Bite which is bad. I don't get through until Struggling at L8. Then, I have to do the same thing in the gym. First trainer? L11 Struggling. Second trainer? L14 Struggling. Only hope right now to get past the Lillipup in the leader battle is if it uses Work Up 5x in a row. And with that being a 1/2...that's a 1/32 chance...and I don't want to reset for that.

Did I mention I'm 6 1/2 hours in?

I was just going to grind to L21 to get Will-o-wisp, so I could just burn and then pray to survive. But at least at that point, I'll be ready to deal with the second gym...I think.

So, trying to figure out what the best option is:
- keep going with Yamask
- start over with Frillish, because that is one that requires a while to get since you need Surf, but it's still relatively early enough to justify treating it as the "earliest"...and that at least gets Bubble and Absorb as early level attacks instead of a ghost move
- start with Litwick...one of the later Pokemon you get (you'd technically get it before Frillish, since you can get it prior to gym 6), and it starts with Ember in addition to Astonish
- start with Golett...the last one you get (after gym 7), and it started with Pound in addition to Astonish

Suggestions? Are any of them technically off the table? Since you wouldn't even get any of them until after the third gym...I mean, if I wanted the most pain, I'd pick Frillish instead, because it's weak for gym 4, while Golett is strong for gym 4...though they swap for gym 5...Litwick is strong against gym 3 but weak to gym 5.

Would help if I wasn't having to fight the changed XP scaling...need 1000 to level but only get like 15 a fight...

This is what I'd personally recommend, and what I'll do if I ever play mono-Ghost Unova. Litwick has a fun-to-use moveset in the early game with plenty of status moves and attack moves of different types, and it's the second available Ghost-type.
Are any of them technically off the table?
No, you can use any of the four you listed.

Sweet. That's what I was hoping for - something other than the pain of Yamask.

Though it would be a good thought experiment. "What's the minimum level to survive the first Gym...."

Probably Will-o-wisp at 21...but that'll take forever.

Yay, swapping around to Litwick. Thanks!

Spoiler: Pokémon Ruby Fighting Monotype - Elite Four Prep Work

With Hariyama needing at least 5 levels worth of grinding, is Heracross going to be worth bringing to the Elite Four as anything but "spending turns reviving the other team members" fodder. I really liked the joke of everyone named after "characters who could beat Goku" meme characters followed by the Viral Heart Disease from the show (eg, Toxic), but I don't know that I have it in me to grind this thing up to level 48, or even level 45. It feels like a waste of EXP and rare candies.

I only refrained from answering as I haven't done Fighting yet so wasn't really sure how to answer. Sorry that I couldn't help, but hope you made it through!

I have a weird question that is related to the runs, but it's not specifically about something within a run. I just finished Black and made the post, so now I've got X and Moon left to finish up the Ghost Ultimate. I'll be halfway done with the types at that point for the standard Ultimate. What I want to do is complete the remaining nine types, then go on to Gen 8, then to Gen 9, then circle back to LA (because I know that's different enough it should be a "fun" time). The question is what would be the best way to approach the remaining nine types - I'm set up to either do each type and that'll get me the game mastery for the first seven gens, or do each gen which will naturally get me the type mastery. There's something about doing them by type, but I can also see some benefit to doing it by gen. Suggestions on which way to jump, and possibly, what might be a good type to do next? I've also got a wheel for types that I spin, so there's that.

Additional question as an edit: I'm starting on X, with a Honedge at level 1 that I had in Bank - has the correct moveset for level 1. Obviously, I'll get the boosted xp, but I can continue using it throughout the whole run, correct? I don't have to go and catch another Honedge in route 6 and swap it out so it doesn't have the xp boost (though part of me wants to, although I'll be set back a little)? Easier to change things around for the first five gens!

If it were up to me, I'd do them by type. Playing the same game nine times in a row will get repetitive and playing different games with the same type would offer variety.

As for your next run, I'd recommend Poison. It has a lot of dual-type variety and you can build some great teams in early generations. The only issue is that in BW1, it's going to be tougher since you'll only have Scolipede, Garbodor, and Amoongus available.

Well, more xp, right?

And sorry, I think I was editing when you were answering - I added in a question about starting with a brought-in-from-Bank Honedge...that's fine as long as it's at level 1 with the right moves, right?

Yes, it's fine. Bringing Pokemon in from Bank/Home counts as a trade for the purpose of the trading/hacking rules. If you were hacking, you're supposed to not go out of your way to give it the EXP bonus, but it's acceptable if you're trading since it's difficult to avoid the EXP bonus on a legit Pokemon. (That being said, you can do it by trading an egg if you want to put in the extra effort, unless you're playing FRLG or Emerald, which do not allow egg trades before the National Pokedex.)
