Personally, I think this is a really bad move from microsoft. I don't see why anyone would ever take windows 10 S over windows 10 or any other OS, partially because of this decision.

Consider the intended purpose of Windows 10 S - educational use for students - and it makes a lot of sense for the browser.

Not so much the seatch engine.

Still is a pretty good thing for preventing unwanted changes, full stop, if one is inclined. And given that upgrading to Pro for educational institutions is a free thing, smart money says that the computers will simply br configured as appropriate.

As for end users (non educational) this shouldn't be an issue if the user is made aware of limitations first. I expect most people to continue buying regular PCs over anything else.

Personally I think it's a good OS for students, but yeah... I don't understand why would you lock the user with using Edge and Bing which I never used in my entire life, maybe it's because non-students will be more tempted to buy a regular version of Windows rather than the student one.

Microsoft does also have Windows 10 Education, which I wanna say is a little less locked down than this.

I hate both of them, I'd rather get a Chromebook just to use both chrome and google if I ever decide to go back to school.

No real surprise. If you have your own browser, you want people to use it and if you have a search engine, then you want them to use it, as well. Add to that fact that you're competing with companies like Google and Mozilla who are more popular, then you have to capitalise in your own strengths in order to hold your ground in that ares. That being said, M$ knows quite well that they're pretty much leaders in the OS market and as such they can easily use that in order to promote their own stuff, no matter how garbage it may be in comparism.

Students can also easily be "educated" into the habit to use stuff like Edge and Bing over other choices that way, especially when they haven't really gathered much experience in that regard. Though, that's probably only a beneficial side effect for good ol' M$. ;)

ew bing... I haven't tried edge but I honestly can't see myself liking it. Chrome just has such a good interface! Really like the bookmarks on chrome too, because I have a ton lol

This is some pretty good opportunity for Mozilla and Google to port their own browser, porting Win32 applications to UWP are easier now than ever since Desktop Bridge is here. Personally, I like Windows 10 S. I don't play games that often, I don't hate Microsoft Edge that much, I just watch YouTube videos, surf the web and Netflix. I hear Microsoft Office will be converted to UWP app, so that's exciting.

I just hate one thing though, have you seen the price on the Surface laptop that comes with Windows 10 S? $999 is the cheapest, and it only comes with 4 GB of RAM!! wth. Microsoft just did the worst Apple-styled marketing right there!

in my opinion Microsoft is just digging there own grave with these stupid decisions just like what they done with the xbox interface (its terrible) and you might be able to get a laptop with better specs and be easier to upgrade than them surface laptops

In that sense, wouldn't Chromebooks be illegal in the EU as well?
Maybe, but it doesn't matter. Who's gonna enforce this on them, really? What (if any) reprisal did Microsoft pay for the Win7 breach of the agreement the article mentions? Corporations and lawmakers are interdependents in each other's pockets; nothing will happen without an immense amount of outside pressure, and class action lawsuits produced by that pressure have, as far as I'm aware, a history of laughably miniscule sums being paid out as far as corps like Microsoft are concerned.

google could be brought to court but win10 S is probably already banned from being sold in the EU or they will sell a special N version where edge or internet exploder isnt the default and cant be changed

So let me get this straight... In the EU, bundling your own OS and browser in illegal, even though you could temporarily use it to download your browser of choice?

Or to put it another way, it's illegal to advertise your own product if your a big company?

So what, is it illegal for McDonalds not to include local burger joints' ads with their own publications since it could stifle their businesses, or does this asinine practice only grace the tech world with it's presence.

Anyways, I can see this being good for schools and whatnot that loan out laptops, have laptop carts in class, or have desktops. The last thing you want in a high school is to give someone like me a computer thats not totally locked down, or I'll be doing something I'm not supposed to right fast.

I don't think the EU ruling really applies to anything other than browsers. Think of it more like advertising - McDonalds wouldn't be able to insist that anyone carrying their adverts never advertise a competitor. Let's be honest if you weren't especially computer-savvy and all you had was IE, that was all you knew of - hell, usually your Windows PC had a desktop shortcut to IE titled "Internet" which was suggesting that IE was the only way to access the internet.

I only learned of Chrome because Google started advertising it on their main search page - switching probably saved my parents £100s in repairs because Chrome supported adblocking which made it less likely that a pop-up would trick my little brother into downloading a virus.

Chromebooks probably wouldn't be illegal due to the way its advertised - the whole point of it is that there's not really anything except Chrome. Likewise I don't think Windows 10 S would be illegal either. One thing I do think should be stopped is that I've heard apparently you can't remove prompts to purchase a larger OneDrive etc. in Windows 10? Presumably they'll have to remove that from 10 S if they want educators to invest.

I have no strong opinion on the search engine thing - presumably they're not going to block Google altogether so if you want to access Maps, Scholar etc. its still there. I occasionally end up using Bing because its the default at my university and it doesn't seem too terrible, just Google is slightly better.
