I just googled "Satoshi Tajiri favourite Pokémon" cause I thought I was probably confused, but everywhere says Poliwag. Most sources seem to cite Bulbapedia, who in turn cites a 2004 interview on Game Center CX (Japanese TV).

Have you heard different? Either is cool anyway :)

I have a shiny Poliwhirl, caught him unexpectedly along the way when I was chain-fishing for shiny dratini. Caught enough shiny Poliwhirl that day to have a Poliwhirl, and evolve one into Politoed, the other into Poliwrath, and give the other to a friend.

IMHO Crasher Wake should have had one on his team. He's a wrestler and a water type gym leader. Such a big missed opportunity.
