These new games will be the most similar to Gen 1 and I'm very excited.

My favorite part of Gen 1 is how open it is. After beating the first gym, you're able to do whatever gym you want. Progression is not locked by gyms until you need to do the 8th gym. While it may not be advisable to do gyms completely out of order, you can, and it makes Kanto feel much more open that it actually is. In the 2 playthroughs of FireRed I did as a kid and as of a few months ago, I accidentally missed the Saffron gym because I had to go out of my way to go there, which just blew my mind. "Oh cool I've been doing the gyms out of order that's so cool!" I hope this new game recaptures that feeling. I just hope the story of Gen 9 doesn't get in the way of me being able to do whatever I want with the gyms.

From what is said, the gym challenge is going to be separate from the story and whatever the 3rd path is. These storylines probably will not intermingle unless it is just characters. My guess is that you will eventually have to do all three before you can do the Elite 4 or whatever they use at the end.

As for the gyms, if there is no set path, I feel like it is going to make the game to easy after a certain point. Are all the gyms just going to have the same level pokemon? Or are they going to scale at certain points? Are we going to have 3 gyms around the same level, or will they scale as we go? The scaling is my worry for this. It is going to make the game really easy, or you won't be able to do some gyms until you have higher level pokemon.

I don't know what's so fun about skipping gyms. Each Gym in a Pokémon game is balanced around a certain level and point in the game, so unless S/V feature level/evo/moveset scaling, this freedom to do gyms "in any order you want" (if that's actually the case) won't really do the game any favor. Like what's the point in doing Lt. Surge when your team is at level 40? I'd rather just battle him at the levels I'm supposed to for a more balanced challenge and level curve.

Besides, it remains to be seen how much open world these games actually are. Legends Arceus was also advertised as an open world game when it actually isn't. It's semi-open world at best, and it still relies heavily on respecting the intended level curve.

    I don't like level scaling in RPG's.

Knocks away the feeling of progressing in strength when everyone and everything always keeps up.

By the way, that's not entirely true about the gyms in generation I. Some gyms you couldn't reach without obtaining certain HMs first and the Viridian gym isn't unlocked until you obtain the other seven badges. Other than that, I agree with you. I believe Pokémon games are much better when you have more freedom to explore without the game blocking your ability to progress to certain areas and/or bombarding you with endless long cutscenes, something that Pokémon Sword and Shield was very guilty of. As for challenging the gyms in any order, I love this idea as well. If level scaling does not exist in this regard, then I can only assume that your Pokémon will be more likely to listen to you regardless of your level and/or number of badges. The player might also have the option to catch high-level Pokémon early as well while training in the open world, similar to catching Alpha Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. I'm assuming that such high level Pokémon are likely to be the Max Raid Terastal Pokémon with unique Tera types. If so, then this feature can encourage players to undergo their gym challenge with several different teams. For example, let's say a player is enjoying the free roaming aspect of the games and levels up their Pokémon until they are level 40 and/or catches a level 40 Terastal Pokémon before taking on the second gym. Players would be able to challenge the gym leader whose Pokémon are closer to level 40 at any time. Afterwards, the player could then take on the lower level gym leaders with a completely different team of lower leveled Pokémon rather than curb stomp him or her with their high level Pokémon. If this is true, this could potentially be the most fun that I'll ever have in a regular Pokémon play-through because it allows me to play the game my own way. I'm very excited about this!

Some of my friends enjoyed this feeling too and I'm sure they'd enjoy hopefully reliving a similar thing in SV. I'll probably do them in traditional order anyway, especially if the levels won't scale (really wish they would so we don't end up destroying weaker gym leaders after defeating a stronger ones), but it's nice knowing the option will be there. Looking forward to seeing how it's handled!

If anything it feels more like a true expansion of the openness of Gen 1, for sure. I'm kinda excited to see if the game really has been developed in a way that the storylines don't just converge at a point in the story and you really are playing three different paths/storylines, for sure.

If Pokémon really wanted to be open world, they should stop being games ruled by levels, or do something about it. Because these two concepts don't work well together.

Imagine any RPG telling you "you can do these areas in any order, but hold on, in this area we put level 10 enemies, this other has level 20 and this one you shouldn't even try until you're level 40" lol. At the end, players who want a logical game progression will have to play in the correct order anyway. It's like when Sw/Sh wild area let you access areas with super high levelled Pokémon early on, but they won't let you catch them and you can't defeat them for Exp so there's no point.

I for some reason have doubts this game will be truly open world, or even if it is it won't be done well. I do think the games will be fun and really worth a play through but I'll likely get bored/tired after doing the story things. I also agree that if they want to do open world, perhaps just get rid of the leveling system. I just want a game where I can catch mons, battle trainers, gyms, and do whatever new stuff Game Freak adds. I think the 3 stories thing is neat for sure, but am unsure how well they'll do it.
