Thoughts on the Fifth Gen board?

Hi! Soo yeah, what do you guys want to see on the fifth gen board specifically? To those of you who don't visit the board, what's unattractive about it?

Understandable, this is a board about games that are... not too popular, but I still would like to see the best activity it could possibly get. o:

I wouldn't say the board is unattractive, at least the fault is in the games not the board itself.

First the Gen V era has ended already, the lack of official Wi-Fi service (E.g. Trade, battles and so on) doesn't make it any better.

Second, Gen V is regarded as the least popular generation from the fandom, which is truly sad.

I'm not sure if an event or two is gonna help pump the activity, but hopefully it does on case you are planning to organize activities.

As far as I'm concerned, B2/W2 fixed anything I didn't like about B/W. :p

Sun brought up most of the section's current flaws, such as the loss of wi-fi from last year and the generation itself ending in 2013 thanks to the release of X & Y. The fact this generation gets tons more hate than the others doesn't help, but I still like showing love to the section and that's why I still post in it.

I'm not sure if an event would help things, but it may still be worth a try. I have been an active regular since 2011 (when it used to be Black & White) and I have taken part in the few events held there over the years.

Another problem is that the section has been badly struggling to gain a new long-term moderator lately, because ever since (Duzzy<3) retired last year, the new mod appointments for 5th Gen this year have mainly been existing staff taking the helm only to end up dumping the section months later. Hopefully the appointment of a new long-term mod will help the section get back on its feet.

As Ben said, a section relies on its members' activity and events do help in a way, but in the end it's the members who keep a section alive. Anyways, good luck with handling the section, Shawn, on top of the other three you already have.

Gen 5 is actually my favourite! And the section is great! The only reason I don't post there (and other sections) regularly is lack of time!

Back in it's glory days (when it was only BW) it was amazing. It's not impossible to recreate that atmosphere. Christmas in Unova, out of the box threads - like stuff I made + the threads by opposite day (the theories were amazing). Capture the heart of Unova and you'll capture the people back. As it is, it's only a forum and that honestly sucks. People answer basic questions like 'best team' all the time, and although it creates activity it doesn't create meaningful activity. Concentrating on Unova's lore and exploring it in detail is important to creating the right atmosphere. The fun the excitement, that's what matters.

On a side note, if it was ever a possibility I'd love to earn the chance to mod it again and help bring it back to what it used to be. Serious here, if there's anything I could do to... Prove myself I guess, I would do it. It was honestly one of the most fun things I ever did.

I'd really love your input for this! Yeah, I'm looking after the section currently, but I'd love it if we were partners in crime. ;w;

Ah yes the days when Nica modded the old B/W... I am feeling PC nostalgia. Hopefully the stuff Shawn has planned could be the right step to bringing the spirit back.

I mean, take a look at where I failed at it. After a while I lost genuine interest in it. You shouldn't be the main creator of activity, but you should be the face for its quality. What people can expect to see from a section should come directly from you and other leaders that visit the section. Visit other sections and view what other non-staff members are commenting on. Don't copy it, but get inspiration from it. Leading a section is setting the expectations of quality, enforcing that quality by leading by example, and applauding others for their contributions, and having regular, on-topic chats with the people who post there.

Miiight as well tell you guys what I thought of so far; I posted this in the staff board, but here, you guys can see!
Would love your input for this. :]

Maybe how Fifth Gen is normally run like the other boards isn't enough anymore... perhaps Fifth Gen can be transformed somehow? Maybe as a sort of pseudo game? Like maybe if you had like an adoptable that only exists on that board? I did this for TWL, and it was popular, but maybe I can make something more from that...

Maybe the posts on the board could mean something more. What if the posts you make there can level up pokemon, or progress within a storyline? The board would still have it's primary focus on having fifth gen discussion in tact, but at the same time, people would be posting there to fufill certain goals within the forum itself.

It's kind of weird, but, I'll give you an example; say there is a user, Athena. Athena has a Oshawott level 5, and it would be jotted down:

Athena
Pokemon: Oshawott Lv. 5

Now, how would they level it up? By posting! 1 post = 1 level up. The cool thing is, pokemon can evolve! In which Oshawott evolves at.. level 17 I believe? So, if you make 17 posts, you can let your Oshawott evolve into a Dewott.

So that can be a thing... by developing a board into something like a game system, maybe it can help encourage members to post there to reach their goals, or something! I can make use of badges and the medals too for members to have for their own personal profile. For example...

[PokeCommunity.com] Thoughts on the Fifth Gen board?
The Trio Badge: Aquire a Fire, Grass, and Water pokemon for your team.

[PokeCommunity.com] Thoughts on the Fifth Gen board?
Level 1 Adventure Medal: Post 5 times in 5th gen in one day.

Or something like that. Basically, trying to make posting fun and innovative! It can be incorporated into the Black, White, Black 2 and White 2 story lines too, like some events can be made in accordance to that. Maybe polls can be made about Team Plasma.. or something.

------

Again, it's just a whim! If not this, then I have smaller ideas, likeeee...

A) Weekly Polls about Unova! Like each week will be about obtaining a badge, and each day within the week, there would be small questions that relates to the journey to collects that badge, like:

Week 1: Trio Badge
Day 1) Which starter did you pick?
Day 2) What is your favourite Rival?
Day 3) Did you prefer Pansear, Pansage, or Panpour?
Day 4) Which of the Trio gym leaders (Chili, Cilan, or Cress) did you battle against or prefer to battle against?
Day 5) BADGE GET!

Or something like that!

B) Maybe like a Pokemon Musical thing where members can show off how they dressed up their pokemon for the Musical? If they're into that?

Never pull the entirety of the weight. Don't make all the threads in there. But don't just leave it alone, either. Be a creator, but also be part of the discussions. I think for me personally, gen V is one of my favorites to discuss mostly because of how kind of...unpopular it is, which I know is weird, but because of that, it leaves a lot of room to discuss things and see a lot of different angles and viewpoints.

I also wouldn't expect a lot out of it. It's a generation that has passed and you can't do much about that, but you should still put in effort to do something fun with it. I think an event would be fun every once in a while, especially around the BW anniversary and during Get Togethers, since those are prime times for events. But don't do so many that it feels like you're trying to force life into the area, if that makes sense. Like you can bring life into the area without forcing it.

I like everything except musicals, people aren't probably going to get involved in that as much as it'd be nice. Musicals were regarded such a small thing in the games.

Maybe a choose your own adventure of post B2W2 - people decide what happens to Ghetsis or N after the story closes etc based on what would be most likely in accordance to the games.

USnova: 5 years On (an event for early March, celebrating five years for the English release). Combine all previous celebration events, get people to vote on their favourite nod to USA. You'd get tons of people because most are from there. And given that the games are based on it, yea.

Debates - was N really a king and did he deserve the hype, were the B2W2 games necessary like wouldve a third game achieved more, is hurting Audino wrong, shouldve Volcarona been a legendary, were older pokemon necessary

Legendary pokemon specials - discuss their backgrounds, whether they were necessary how they couldve been included more in the games, what else you wouldve wanted to see in terms of storyline

Team plasma - make up a convincing PR campaign for team plasma, whether their message was right

Was Lacunosa a wasted opportunity - with kyurem out at night wouldve made an amazing subplot

Anville town - based upon the best type of cloud - cumulonimbus incus but yet it's nothing special, why not scrap that and make village bridge a city

Cloud theme in general is cool to discuss

N's castle. Actually N growing up so much to discuss there

Neo team plasma Vs team plasma

Few things I thought of. I'll have more soon.

Interesting plans you got there Shawn, I feel like the medals and badges could serve as an incentive to post in the section. But if that doesn't go well I wouldn't mind weekly polls making a comeback as well.

I actually liked Gen V quite a bit. It was refreshing to see so many of the original Pokémon from a new perspective (voltorb > foongus, etc.). The endgame was a bit different from your typical "omg beat teh elite fourzzz!!1"

Also, snivy.

Oh my gosh you just made me remember about medals.
Sad they didn't bring medals back in X/Y or OR/AS. Fun little collectibles and it gave more goals.

I didn't even know Gen 5 was so unpopular. I believe it was the best generation, personally speaking. The story was quite engaging, different to your typical Pokèmon experience. And you can't forget about all original Pokèmon in the entire region!
