Do you know any games that are underrated? Any games that might be criticised a lot, but you think deserve more credit than they get? Any hidden gems?

I'm sure there's plenty out there, not every "bad" game is actually as bad as it might be claimed (at least not for some of the people who play it).

I can't think of any off the top of my head, but what do YOU think are some underrated games?

I don't know if I would go so far as to say it's underrated, but the Katamari series is a bit of a niche game that I love so much. It gets pretty average scores but I find the gameplay to be so addictively fun, with a really nice OST.

Oh god, where do I start?

NieR is easily one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking pieces of storytelling I have ever seen in a video game. It has a dark and gritty world with a very sinister sense of humour and, whilst it doesn't reveal very much until the very end, it's filled with twists, especially if you play it more than once. By the end of my second playthrough I was in awe of what it had put me through; I felt really, REALLY despicable for the role the game had thrust me into. We were lucky enough to get the Gestalt version instead of the Replicant version localized, which I think adds so much more depth to the protagonist; a father out to save his daughter is a lot more scarce than a sibling relationship. The cast outside of that is also fantastic and unique, and has a weird sort of chemistry that makes for a very entertaining tale...despite the gritty and constantly depressing atmosphere.

...it also has the greatest video game soundtrack in existence. That is perhaps the only thing about it that ISN'T underrated - a lot of well-deserved praise has gone towards the OST, but the game itself is constantly criticized by people who clearly didn't play beyond the first ten minutes. It has a spectacular story and cast that is well worth experiencing.

Resonance of Fate is another one that was released in the shadow of the vastly inferior and highly disappointing Final Fantasy XIII and received little to no praise or attention, despite its interesting Valkyrie Profile-esque battle system, absolutely brutal learning curve - I ragequit twice on this game for months because of it - steampunk premise, and vaguely religious story. The camaraderie between Vashyron, Zephyr and Leanne more than makes up for the occasionally slow moments. We don't get many steampunk JRPGs anymore, and this one is tragically overlooked.

I'd call ZHP: Unlosing Ranger vs. Darkdeath Evilman and its spiritual sequel, The Guided Fate Paradox, underrated as well...as in, hardly anyone has heard of them. Most people think only of Disgaea when they think of NIS, but these two games were pretty good, the former for its fantastic sense of humour and for being able to make an entire game based around a single boss battle - which you lose repeatedly - and the latter for being the most brutal dungeon-crawler I've ever experienced. I expect The Awakened Fate Ultimatum will suffer the same fate as these two when it's released...

Vanquish is another one...Platinum Games have been so successful with Bayonetta that this has been completely overlooked...and it's just as fast-paced and exciting. It's also a lot harder. It has a very generic look to it, admittedly, but it's a lot of fun to play.

Oh, add Baten Kaitos to that list as well. With the likes of Tales of Symphonia, Paper Mario 2 and Skies of Arcadia, it's easy to see how this one got overlooked, but it's a shame that it did - it boasts some of Sakuraba's finest compositions, a unique card battle system that actually WORKS for a change, and a fairly intriguing story.

It seemed to be rated pretty well, so yeah probably not really underrated, but here's a quoted fact from Wikipedia:
The game was not released in PAL territories such as Europe and Australia, since publishers thought it was too "quirky" for these markets; however, Electronic Arts picked up both sequels, We Love Katamari and Me & My Katamari, for release in Europe.

Phew... where do you want me to start?

Sega Genesis: Mystical Fighter, Daze Before Christmas.
Game Boy: Ikari no Yousai 2, Crayon Shin-Chan 4, Super Mario Land 2.
    NES: Mr. Gimmick.
    SNES: Super Ninja-kun.

There are surely a lot more of underrated games...

The Mystical Ninja Goemon series in general, and now that FNAF is dominating the horror genre: Amnesia: the Dark Descent, Bay of Pigs, and The Penumbra games.

Vanquish and Dante's Inferno for the Xbox 360. The first is an amazing third person high speed shooter and the second is a God of War clone, but both are great to play nonetheless. Both were actually prepped to have sequels but unfortunately due to poor sales both projects were scrapped. Shame cause I would have bought the shit out of both of those games.

I wouldn't say it was actually underrated, but Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath at the time of release was very under sold and under advertised, despite it being an extremely interesting cross between First and Third person gameplay before many other people had done it. Now it's available on Steam and PS3 (in HD even!), so give it a look if you haven't before.

The Guided Fate Paradox has an amazing soundtrack. Vashyron from Resonance of Fate has a hilarious sense of humor. (They are in spoilers for those who haven't played the game.)

    Spoiler:

    Spoiler:

For my picks of underrated games:

Drakengard 3: It's bloody, it's gory and it makes up for it with its cruel sense of humor. I don't know anyone else who owns this game, or seen many people on internet with it. The only person that I have seen playing this game is the same person who did the spoiler videos for Resonance of Fate.

Shin Megami Tensei & its spinoffs(excluding Persona): Everyone knows about the light and softer spinoffs of SMT, but they don't know about the original games and the other spinoffs. With it's sci-fi horror themes, amazing soundtrack, intricate storyline and battles. Despite Persona selling well in the states, Shin Megami Tensei and its other spinoffs are cult classics. Another series of games that omegaevolution (the person who did the spoiler videos of Resonance of Fate) has played.

Earth Defense Force 2017 & Earth Defense Force 2025: I recently got a European copy of Earth Defense Force 2025 for Christmas (I'm American btw) and the first cutscene had me on my back, laughing my rear off. Despite being a budget title paying homages to many B-Movies (mainly Them and Godzilla), it's amazingly fun. Giant insects have invaded Earth, are you a bad enough dude to shoot them all?

Hyperdimension Neptunia: Yes, we can agree that the original game for the PS3 was horrid in many ways, due to Idea Factory having a low budget. But the sequels and remakes have improved it to make it a solid game that pokes a lot of fun at video game and anime tropes. The story story boils down to video game consoles as cute girls. Yes, a video game about the console wars.

While not necessarily underrated, I feel that the Boktai series never got the recognition that it deserved. I loved the games unique solar sensor feature, even if it could be a pain sometimes. And they were generally very solid and fun Action RPGs. I guess that we'll never see a new game in the series, due to it's lack of popularity.

Jet Force Gemini, yo. Rare is always recognized for big games like Banjo-Kazooie and the Donkey Kong Country series, but no one ever talks about this one. It may not be everyone's type of Rare game, sure, but it's a really fun 3rd person shooter and it's definitely underrated. The music is really nice and I always found the atmosphere really good as well. You can buy the game relatively cheap so if you're still clinging to your N64 and want to try it out, give it a go. If you don't like it, like I said, it's not expensive by any means so you won't feel too burned.

My grandmother is getting my Katamari Damacy for Christmas. n___n

I just want to note that the OP used "Underrated" correctly and I can't say how happy that makes me. A lot of times I'll see threads with the title "Underrated" and then go in to immediately see an opening statement such as "Which games do you think are overlooked and need more attention?", which is a whole different monster entirely. Kudos, GreenFlame.

Pretty much any J-game just because they come from Japan.
Do you really think this, Satoshi? Because that's a very large statement to make.

Hey! Don't present them like Xbox exclusives =D

I wasn't, I just don't know how the PlayStation experience is like - as some games are better on one console than the other - so I was deriving from my Xbox experience.

Rule of Rose is kind of underrated. I say "kind of" because reviewers are definitely not wrong in criticizing its gameplay and controls, and at the end of the day it is a game, so if the gameplay is not fun (and it isn't) it doesn't deserve a high rating.

But the idea and story of the game was amazing, and I don't think I'd ever seen anything like it. It was a waste of some great characters and a story that was both poignant and beautiful, but also shocking and disturbing, and its use of symbolism was effective and appropriate. Music was 10/10, creepy atmosphere also on point. But the combat was buggy and infuriating, and they made a (relatively) large, explorable map that had very little content - lots of doors and areas you can technically "explore" and walk to, but entirely pointless because the areas serve no purpose and 98% of the doors in the game snap shut the second you open them.

I still think it deserves more credit for the writing and plot and everything else that it did so right, but even I can't defend the gameplay.

Sleeping Dogs is the most underrated and underplayed game ever. It had rock solid fighting, good shooting, way better driving than GTA IV, and a very atmospheric world.

On top of that good formula already, it had one of the best stories I've ever experienced in a game. I have never cringed when someone died in a story as I did when
    Spoiler:
And I've never felt genuinely depressed as I did when
    Spoiler:
and I could keep going on and on with times the story provoked emotion from me (and I'm a rather emotionless guy).

But story would be nothing without memorable characters, and Sleeping Dogs is chocked full of them. From Wei and Jackie to Winston and Raymond, this game had characters that I actually cared about, or hated or was afraid of. Not just that, I actually remembered their names!

The DLC was also great. The story DLCs didnt feel tacked on and all added something meaningful to the plot. (I got some genuine laughs watching Wei on beat duty) and once I got the top secret car... ho boy I didn't ever drive anything else!

With the release of Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition (Which re balances a lot of DLC content so you cant just walk out with an Assault Rifle with a Grenade Launcher attachment as soon as you get your first house (Guns are a rarity in Hong Kong after all) there's no better time to try it out

    Rappelz is underrated.
Rappelz is like you typical mmo. you have your classes, races and items. but rappelz boasts a exlatent battle system.
The best thing i love about this game is the soul pet feature. When you tame a pet. it gets indvalal values. depending on thoose values depens on what class that pet. and no two pets are the same. i tamed 1 healing bird once i tryed to tame another and got raged DD bird.
OVerall i requmend this game. https://www.rappelz.my/
