Yep, an unpopular opinions thread, but not for Pokemon as a whole, but just regarding Pokemon gaming. Now let's share some takes regarding playstyles and whatnot regarding Pokemon battling that we feel not many others would think of. And please, do not attack other users just because you don't agree with them. Other forum rules still apply

    now as for mine:

-I see that in playthroughs people tend to spend way too many turns buffing their mons up with moves and stuff and... I really don't like that. I mean I do that too sometimes, but constantly wasting turns increasing your stats just leaves you vulnerable to getting critted or whatnot, and if they faint all your work goes to waste. Whenever I do that, I make sure that it wouldn't be that a crit or surprise attack takes my mon out. I guess it's not bad in competitive, but when watching any kind of playthrough of Pokemon and watching noobs constantly use stat boosters and leave their mons at risk greatly bugs me. I know I'm starting to sound like a conservation officer here, but I just can't stand it. In fact, why not just send in something that straight out can deal with the opponent rather than just throw in something that cannot and just overbuff it while risking it?

-Hyper beam is terrible, overrated, and i hate it more than ever for breaking a randomised Nuzlocke I just got back into. Easily my least favourite move behind Destiny bond. With Hyper beam, chances are it just leaves you vulnerable if you can't kill the opponent and it's just too strong when the opponent uses it. I will never use that horrendous cesspool of an attack again unless I have something that is greatly lacking in Normal STAB or moves in general. Honestly, they should just remove Hyper beam from the game and make Tri attack or Hyper voice or even a new cool Normal attack and make it that most mons can learn them. I can't think of one time Hyper beam has ever impressed me, it really has caused me more trouble than it has helped. Once again, I just loathe Hyper beam, that hellhole of a move.

i also really liked Gen 7, and i dont think Lillie is really that bad of a character aside from the Nebby stuff and even then, that didn't bother me much.

X & Y are my favorite games so far because of the minimal plot and large number of available Pokemon to capture.

Sun/Moon weren't bad games. It was actually nice that they changed the formula. I've always felt people don't give S/M the credit they deserve for trying something different.

Also, generation 5's Pokemon were not "lazy" or "badly designed" people always act like Vanillite and Trubbish are "lazy" and like "game freak is running out of ideas!" When I wholeheartedly disagree. I found a lot of the gen five Pokemon designs to be good.

Finally, I don't think having friendlier rivals is a bad thing. We can't have all rivals be mean and nasty all the time, that would really make the whole thing stale, don't you think? I specifically, in this case mean Hau, by the way, not the X/Y rivals.

I think the Mystery Dungeon spin offs are more enjoyable than the main series games.

i'd honestly stretch that to like... most spinoffs. when you play colosseum/XD/battle revolution, and even past games like pokemon stadium and pokemon snap and others, and then play the main series games, they do feel.... rather lacking in comparison.

I can agree with the rivals sentiment. However, they always seem to give your rivals the same cookie cutter personalities: they're either a stuck up a$$ who thinks they're the most powerful trainer to walk the earth, or they're overly nice. There's not really an in between and I think there should be.

Black and White were actually super solid games, and had one of, if not the most fleshed out characters in the entire series.

i don't like the gen 4 games. out of all of the generations, gen 4 is second to the last of my list to replay. idk if its the slooowwww pace of the game (thank god for emulators now eh?). but something about 'em is meh. they're enjoyable and the new pokemon were excellent but eh
i'm not saying they're the worst games out there tho. pls dont get mad

after finishing swsh, i can confidently say that it has the best end-plot imo of any pokemon main series game to date

    Black versions >>>>>>>>>>>>White versions.

There are a bunch of White exclusives I prefer to the Black counterparts, but that is literally it. I think just about every aspect about the Blacks surpass the Whites. Looking at all the city differences in the Whites... just... they don't look good at all and are just too generic. The Black alternatives all look significantly better by a gazillion landslides. Easily the only time where I was satisfied with my version.

I would never claim that Gen 1 were the best games but they get way too criticized. They games were released in between the mid and late 90's, give it a rest.
I also think it's odd that people often say some only love Gen 1 games because of nostalgia while claiming they're own favourite Gen games are the ones they've started with.

While Gen 1 games feel extremely outdated they've still built a foundation for future generations. Also, I personally think Gen 1 has the nicest looking roster design wise. Sure, some crappy
ones but the good outweigh the bad for me. Vice versa, each generation that came after had to be more innovative when it comes to both Pokémon and game design.
That being said, the Kanto region is being oversaturated. I still believe every generation has something cool and unique to offer.

Thank God! I just bought a copy of Black 2 and was going back and forth whether I should buy one or the other. I was split on exclusives as well.

A Pokémon's design isn't bad just because it's based on an object or an animal that another Pokémon is based on. Zoroark and Thievul do very different things with their fox motifs.
