When you play video games do you listen to the actual music they have for the game or do you mute whatever you're playing on and pull out your own playlist?

When I play Skyrim I mute the TV and pull out a Viking Metal playlist and when I play Final Fantasy I turn down whatever I'm on and put on my FF remixed playlist.

Even at grinding part, I always listen to the game BGM.
It's tied to the game so why would I want to experience something else?

Since one of my favorite kinds of music is video game soundtracks, I always listen to the video game music. The composers of video game music worked hard to make the music. So I never listen to something else while playing a video game.

I do listen to the music in video games. Sometimes I try and find the music online just to listen to it. One of my favorite video game soundtracks is the Tales of Vesperia OST. I absolutely love that game, and its music.
As for muting the music, I don't tend to, unless I am playing a game on an emulator and know I'll be speeding through it. I wouldn't want to listen to the mess the speeding causes to the video game music so I do mute it and play some other music.

I think I've always been a musically-inclined individual so regardless of the game, I will listen to the music. The only time when I will have my own earphones plugged in is when a game has horrendous English dub that I can't bear so I normally skip through those scenes while listening to my own songs. In terms of soundtracks, Final Fantasy will forever be my favourite because they constantly have beautiful music, especially the piano + violin combinations; makes me want to learn either of those instruments. For instance, when I first got Final Fantasy X HD, I sat at the title screen for a couple hours listening to the theme music; it gave a very nostalgic feeling.

With most games I just mute the game and play my own music. Mainly power or symphonic metal, even with adorable platformers 'cause I seem to play better when I sing along.

    There are a few exceptions:

    • For Survival Horror games, I leave on the game's music for obvious reasons. Ambiance and all that.
    • Occasionally FPS games. Sometimes I just don't know where the hell I'm going, and sometimes they don't really tell you where you're being shot from. Sometimes, listening helps.
    • Music games. Though the only ones I own/like are the Bit.Trip games, this still deserves a mention. Wouldn't buy a music game just to mute it, that's dumb.
    • Infrequently, I actually really like the game's soundtrack. More-so with older games for the nostalgia factor, like I've always left on the music in LoZ games. I'm especially fond of OoT and LTTP. I actually have a few tracks from the LTTP soundtrack as ringtones on my phone.
But even if I really like the music, most of the time I will eventually grow bored of it and mute it in favor of something else. Especially if it's a big sandbox-type game or if I'm grinding in an RPG.

I love listening to the actual music! When I play a game, the OSTs are actually some of the things that I actually look for when I want to play a game. It's funny actually: I'll be prone to playing OSTs of games when I'm just studying or doing some art; it's a lot more peaceful doing it that way then listening to my actual music.

When able, I would play my own music over Grand Theft Auto's radio. I absolutely loved getting to hear my tunes while I drove around and did missions.

Depends on the game tbh. If a game has barely any OST to listen to I pull up a playlist, but most games (and even mods of games) have great OST's of their own. The only games I pull out a play list are FPS games and often games with no OST. And on rare occasions when I feel like streaming I pull out a playlist instead of playing the OST of that game.
