The thing is, large scale protests like this are what spurned real change in the past. The black protests, the LGBT movement, etc. In the face of racial inequality that is still rampant today, the people are angry. Is a smashed window worth more than a life?
Of course, I wouldn't support needless destruction of property, but I have a feeling some people go to protests simply to take advantage of the distraction and loot/destroy things. A few makes a bunch of people look bad.
