    Rubbish title, I know. xD;

    Well, I just just randomly thinking whilst thinking of ideas for some new threads to liven this place up a little, and I took a look at a few old character, and I though, I wonder what it would be like if Ash traveled with them? So you, I'm sure you get the picture of the thread. Are there any existing characters that have appeared in the anime before that you think would be a great idea to travel around with Ash? (What a mouthful xD;)
    Any character at all, an old rival, recurring character or even just a random character that appeared in like, one episode.

    Try and stray away from old companions, but rather some interesting characters we didn't see much of.

    If they ever show progression for Ash I would like to see him play a mentor to Max like he did with May. I really think Max deserves more story to his character then he got since he was overshadowed by his sister to say the least. I think it would also be neat if he also played a mentor role to Casey as well although she has already had the experience of being a trainer herself. And also add Todd to the picture(no pun intended). Snap had a own game dedicated to him for heaven sakes the very least they could do is give him more love then a couple episodes. I would like to see Paul with Ash it would give like a Tai and Matt dynamic of rivalry within the group. If they had Barry I think it would be neat too. Having Gary I would be like "screw Ash replace him with Gary". Having Richie join up would seem like two of the same character at least to me, I would not be opposed to it, but they just seem so similar to one another.
     
    All old characters suit me. Its just basically nice to see old characters make a comeback.
    Anyway, I am gonna go specific:
    -Brock ;( I miss him already, I want him back :(

    -Paul: I loved that rival and I thought he was much deeper than any other, I really want him appearing again much more than anyone else.

    -Cynthia: Oh C'mon, who doesn't like that lady with her beastly garchomp? After seeing Cynthia in Black and White, the idea kept growing on me. I WANT HER BACK FOR SOME REASON. I want her battle Ash :@

    -Barry: Simply Hilarious, Bianca does a decent job replacing him but he was better <_<

    -Any of his Girl Companions: Whether its Misty, May, or Dawn. Such reunion is really what makes the show burn alive with excitement. I just feel so happy and surprised surprisingly :P when I see their comebacks.

    Hmm...all other characters are ok...but these are what I stress on most.

    *Ahem*. I reckon Angie would've been good to join the journey, she seemed pretty cool and a ship could develop more between her and Ash considering how they ended! Forsythia was also pretty good as a character, seeing her develop more would be interesting - especially watching her Roserade become more and more confident and powerful. Another character to keep around more would be Cheryl, she was very interesting and was pretty funny the way she handled Brock. Gardinia too, she was also very entertaining! But could grow annoying quickly... As you can tell, I rather liked Sinnoh. ;p

    He was awesome, despite only really appearing in one episode. His battle with Ash and how they're personalities were so different at the time, 'twas just perfect :3 So yes. I think Samurai should travel with Ash.
     
    I loved Barry and would have been very happy to see him travel with Ash. He added lots of comic relief to the show when he was around and it always made me eager to watch episodes. There's also Bianca too, who is pretty much the Unova version of Barry...

    Some people may say their comedy would get old, but if they were on the main cast, the writers would obviously have to tone them down a bit so their personalities won't feel as forced and so we wouldn't get tired of it too quickly. Barry and Bianca didn't/don't appear often, so the writers want to give us the "main course" while they're actually onscreen.

    But anyway! I'd also lovelove to have seen Casey travel with Ash honestly, I found her pretty interesting. There's also Sakura. You know, the girl with an Espeon back from Johto who made friends with Misty? I actually thought she was a good character who should've stuck around longer.

    How could I forget about Barry! Barry would be an amazing travel partner, he was very funny and entertaining as well as having a more serious and relatable side - he'd be a great partner! Imagine all the fines he'd collect... You're also right about Sakura, she'd be a great companion too, especially with her Espeon. Then they could bring back Garry Oak and have his Umbreon fight her Espeon semi-regularly...
     
    Going off what Kenshin said a bit... It could be pretty fun to see Ash being mentor to Max and Casey. Like if Ash was made older- 15 or so- and Casey 13 with a bit of experience, Max just starting out. Kind of rehashing the Hoenn dynamic almost. I know you said don't go with old companions, but Max didn't get much love I don't think. :( and anyway you just said that to keep away the "Misty & Brock were better" posts

    Ash would be the knowledgeable experienced one, but still rather hotheaded and relentlessly enthusiastic. Casey would take Ash's place as the exuberant one with mid-level experience. Max would be... Max, lol. The navigator, the problem-solver, the one who remembers to pack food and supplies. Of course he would still be a rookie when it comes to battling and slightly egotistical, but that's who he is.

    Max and Casey would be at odds often, I think. Max calling Casey out on her mistakes and teasing her about her enthusiasm; Casey getting fired up because of his know-it-all attitude. Ash would mediate for the most part, though occasionally get attacked by the younger two in unison or having each try to get him to side with them.

    I think this trio could be fun because there's no Brock character to cool everything down; it'll be constantly energetic and the characters will be able to interact and discover/overcome their flaws more. There's less boring exposition because Max is a walking encyclopedia who could nevertheless be contradicted by Ash, Casey, or the CotD at any point, leading to a little debate, thought and/or argument.

    The only problem I'm seeing here is that the three are training for very similar goals, unless Max decides to try the Pokemon Professor path. I actually could see Max deciding about halfway through the journey that, like his sister, badge collecting is not for him and he would rather study to be a Professor. Possibly this traveling groups could be used to promote certain remakes, in which case Ash has no need to be battling the gym leaders and instead spends his time training his Pokemon for the next league or having Max and Casey train against him- or even studying gyms because he had decided to take up the offer of Frontier Brain from so long ago?

    idek but that was kinda fun to write.

    Jaco: He's the breeder who prefers Flying-type Pokemon but had to train an Electrike he knew would fail a test, but with help from Pikachu and Pachirisu, Electrike was able to control its power and eventually evolved. I guess he is a good Brock-like character in some way.

    Bianca: She's the rival from BW, and is a bit of an airhead but we love her cute charms and she even tried to catch Luke's Zorua. If she traveled with Ash a lot longer she would actually learn something.
     
    I would have liked to see Angie travel with Ash because I liked how they had similar personalities and that they actually like each other.
