Day 2 of the Hoenn competition.

Ended on a 14-6. Much better than last time.

Here's a reversal finish I managed to pull off, even though there were some misplays on both sides: ZQ2W-WWWW-WWX4-M54C

After seeing the opponent's Salamence use Dragon Dance, I expected it to finish off Starmie with Outrage (or Return, but it didn't Mega), but it went for Draco Meteor instead. Why a Dragon Dance Salamence would use Draco Meteor is beyond me. Before that, a Switcheroo Seviper locked Starmie into Psyshock.

Lure Mence for sure. This allows Mence to break pokes that think they can wall the normal DD set (I'm looking at you, Gliscor and Hippowdon. I assume that Regirock and Dusclops are also things in Battle of Hoenn).

I only played 5 battles today and I think I'm done. This competition has reminded me why I hate 3v3 battles so much. You can't cover everything in your opponent's team when you're only allowed to use 3 Pokemon out of your team, so you basically auto-lose if you pick the wrong ones.

But whatever, I only participated so I could get the Tyrunt and I played more than enough battles for it, so no reason to stay salty about it.

As an FYI, Gliscor and Hippowdon aren't allowed in the Hoenn competition. Only Hoenn Dex Pokemon are allowed

The Hoenn Meta-Game is prety much what I expected. Lots of Salamence. Not that bad if you roll with a counter.

Haven't played that many games only 3-2 right now.

mega salamence doesnt have 'true counters', you just have checks and revenge killers, but revenge killing it is rly hard to anyway after a dd, and it has outstanding physical bulk and decent special defense too :/ unless u're going agaisnt 12-yr-olds dragon rush and strength "hurr durr my mega salamence iz d best!!1!" megamence users.

Another interesting battle today. My team was put up against someone named Calem. Does anyone know where that name comes from? Or is it named after some movie/game Character?

I had removed 3 pokemon through leech seed, toxic, knock off, and icy wind, but my opponent sent in a Talonflame against my Gliscor.
It took damage from Stealth rocks and was hit by a toxic. I predicted a brave bird and sent in a rocky helmet Ferrothorn. It hit harder than I thought because it had a life orb.

The total recoil damage (Iron Barbs, Rocky Helmet, life orb, brave bird) decimated The Talonflame.

Calem is the default/canon name for the male player character/rival in X&Y.

All the player characters:

Spoiler:

If that is true, that this round of tournaments will only include Pokémon from the Hoenn Pokédex, then this will certainly make things more limited and different than the Kalos rounds were, since there's less to use. Although Hoenn does have roughly 2/3 what Kalos does...

It most definitely is true, hence why I was able to get away with Starmie on the team.

The problem with the Hoenn lineup is the fact that (Mega) Blaziken and Mega Camerupt are the only good Fire Pokemon there.

How's mega-gross' prevalence in the tourney? Anyone hit up that usage stats data yet?

I haven't hit the stats, but out of the 8 or 9 Metagross that I battled, only one was mega, and the rest were an even split between Safety Goggles and Assault Vest.

Okay, so the Battle of Hoenn tournament is now officially over and the rankings are being tallied. How well did you do in it if you participated?

As for me, I ended on a 22-8. While I didn't get to win my very last battle, the tournament was still fun, ranging from creaming the opposition with Mega Salamence to thinking about what I could have done differently in the battles I lost.

So I wanna make the transition into VGC competitions, would anyone be willing to tutor me or just give me some pointers? Maybe help me analyze my OU team and see if it's viable for VGC doubles?

Edit: also just from what little experience I have on Battle Spot I feel like in VGC I'm gonna have to spam a lot of Smogon Banned stuff like Prankster, Double Team/Evasion hax, Mega Kanga/Gengar, etc. is it right to assume this?
