What if... major Trainers changed type specialities?

As you know, most major Trainers in the Pokémon games swear by a certain type - Gym Leaders, Elite Four, Trial Captains, Kahunas and the like, to mention a few. On a few occasions, however, the Trainers that we know have changed their type speciality. I can mention at least three examples:
-Jasmine was once a Rock-type Gym Leader, but that changed upon the discovery of the Steel-type and Steelix - an evolution of her own Onix.
-Cheren had no type speciality, but adopted the Normal-type as his when he became the Gym Leader of Aspertia City in B2/W2.
-Bede swore by Psychic-types until Opal abducted him took him under her wing, at which point he began training Fairy-types just like her.

I can also mention an example from a well-known fangame, under the cut for spoilers:

My question is, can you imagine any of the major Trainers, whatever their position, changing their type speciality, adopting one if they didn't have it, or dropping it if they did? This can come from observations on any of their canon appearances, or from fan content that you've seen around and you would like to discuss. Try to at least make it plausible in-canon or at least give some context to your explanation if you go too much into headcanon/fan content territory.

    ----------

From a gameplay standpoint, I believe Whitney's type speciality may be changed for a future Johto remake. Sure, she is infamous for Miltank, but her Gym motif is based on Clefairy - the type of which has been changed from pure Normal to pure Fairy. There are several routes Game Freak could take with this; keep her a Normal-type Trainer and change her Gym's motif to something like Jigglypuff or Chansey, change her into a Fairy-type Trainer and give her another ace, or... make her the first dual-typed Gym Leader in the series! I'm excited to see what path they'll take with her.

From a story standpoint, a change in type speciality might happen to any of the Trainers we have seen, but these are the ones I personally see as most plausible:
-Koga eventually making it to Champion and dropping his Poison-type speciality in favor of a more varied team that can employ disruption tactics and inflict status effects. He was already on the way to it in the Johto games - using Forretress, a non-Poison-type, to set up Toxic Spikes and use Explosion. I reckon Janine would do the same if she advanced through the ranks like her dad did.
-Misty becoming an Ice-type Trainer in the far future, in the same vein as the spoilery example above. She did admire the Ice-type Elite Four Lorelei a lot, so she'd likely take it up as a tribute to her after the latter's death/disappearance or just grow into it with age or experience.
-Roark and/or Gordie taking up their respective parents' speciality types as they grow up, in an ironic "you're becoming more and more like your father/mother" way.

Whitney would become a Fairy type trainer in modern times, honestly. She has pink hair and likes to be "cute" so I'd imagine that instead of Normal, she'd be Fairy, and nothing would change.

Yeah Whitney would be Fairy but keep Miltank because facing a Pokémon with two base stats over 100 - one of which is speed - is pretty unique that far into a game. Early gym difficulty is one thing Johto really did well - Pidgeotto is lacklustre in Gen IV as Gust is special, and it should have been Noctowl, but then you have Scyther, Miltank, and Gengar as the next aces (with Scyther having Technician and U-Turn in Gen IV making it a real challenge!)

Wallace and/or Juan could change to Fairy given their whole beauty aspect. Wallace in particular could keep Milotic but add Gardevoir (iirc Tate & Liza ignored Ralts' family in RSE), Azumarill, Primarina if it was available…

Given his association with speed I could see Barry moving towards Electric-types (or Psychic as "I wonder who he takes after" suggests Palmer's Cresselia may have been forced to do something to his mum's memories). Wattson seems another candidate for Steel given how much construction he's responsible for.

Not a type change but my headcanon is the Sinnoh protagonist arrives at Snowpoint Temple to find Norman and Brandon throwing down for the right to capture Regigigas - Norman as it's a powerful Normal-type with an awful ability, Brandon because like him it's trio master of the Regis!

I think Cheren in BW2 could've been an awesome grass-type gym leader, but that's primarily down to his personality - he became a lot more relaxed and sweet, and grass seems like the perfect type for someone like that. Plus Snivy is his canon starter to me!

Also would love to see Falkner become a steel-type gym leader. Not sure why I think that's cool but it just fits to me, and a gym leader using steel types in the first gym would catch people by surprise. :')

Hey, both of these are really cool ideas! I mean, the Grass-type Gym Leader slot was vacated when Cilan (and his brothers) quit, so Cheren taking it up could have worked just as well. Falkner taking up the Steel-type also sounds cool, and it sounds plausible story-wise; he wouldn't want to fall behind in his rivalry with Janine, so he'd probably get a Skarmory like the manga version of his father did... and end up taking a second type speciality. Who knows, I might even come to like him better if he did take up Steel-types.

Raihan is basically already a Ground type gym leader. :coolcat:

Crasher Wake, based on his appearance, could easily be a Fighting type specialist imo. Maybe give him a Poliwrath and a Rapid Strike Urshifu as a nod to him once being a Water type specialist while at it.
Which would mean two fighting type specialists in Sinnoh, but whatever. Maylene's hair makes me wanna retype her to Flying type specialist though.

Roxie could double as an Electric type specialist, especially with Toxtricity's introduction in gen 8.

Seconding Whitney would probably be switched to fairy in modern games, there are gym leaders who have Pokemon that aren't of their specialty type. Janine and Koga to me would also make sense with dark types and I just randomly thought of the concept of Blaine switching to ghost types after the volcano erupts might be interesting. I also feel like Brycen and fighting may also work and I thought Mina was a bug trainer when I first encountered her.
