  • Breed, train, test, repeat.

That's the key. The Battle Institute will tell you how versatile your team is, you can test it out there. another way to effectively test it, though you won't get a grade, is the Maison. Of course you could sweep the Maison or Institute battles and still not do well against players.

Players are unique, and different. The trick is predicting what the player will use, and what moves that pokemon will have. This takes a lot of practice. Don't rely too much on damage dealing moves either, something I notice when battling in Battle Spot is that when a player depends almost entirely on damage moves I can break their strategy with one good hypnosis, or toxic and a tank.

Do not underestimate the value of healing moves like roost or rest (with snore or sleep talk). Also, watch priority moves and status changes. There are several moves, and an ability now, that can swap attacks with defenses. You appear to already be paying attention to STAB and type advantages, but don't forget to mix up the move selection a bit. Garchomp can work well in some cases with a poison jab, for example, if it's fast enough, and that helps against grass and fairy types if you get stuck in such a situation.

A lot of strict strategy teams will rocket through the ranks but wind up stuck in the median because they are not adaptive enough, so build more than one team. If you are battling on a rank and notice your strategy cannot beat a lot of other teams, figure out the common strategy for that rank then select a team that opposes them for your battle box before going back to battling. That's how I have been crawling up the ranks, it means figuring out a lot more than just one strategy to find holes in all the strategies.

Also, find your niche. Head to head battles may not be something you're good at, try the others like double, triple, and rotation battles. I found my techniques for battling work best with double battles, and all my pokemon are trained to be optimized in such battles.

For your Staraptor, I'd recommend protect.

  • Say, I've got an interesting something: I've noticed that Flabébé can have different colored flowers. What I'd really like to know is, is it merely an aesthetic difference, or does it affect her performance in any way?

Damned if I know if this was already asked, I've no time to skim through over 80 pages worth of questions.

Purely aesthetic, it has no effect on how they function.

i'm sorry if this question has already been answered!
but i was just wondering what the difference was between "outstanding" and "superior" from the judge in kiloude city.

for example, i've breed two eevees

one eevee is "outstanding overall, with its strongest iv being in attack, with special attack being equally good"
and the other is "superior overall, with its strongest iv being in attack, but also defense, special attack, and special defense"

is outstanding better than superior? would the first eevee be better to use in battle than the second because of this?
or would the second eevee be optimal because of the multiple ones listed?

    https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Stats_judge

Here you go. ;) It's all in there, gen VI is down near the bottom.

  • I have some questions about Super Training and IV stats.

    I have a lvl 1 Eevee and after calculating the stats on serebii's IV calculator, it says that my Pokemon has those IVs: 0 - 31 / 0 - 31 / 26, 31 / 10 - 31 / 0 - 31 / 0 - 31

Are they all perfect or you cannot judge because the Pokemon is only lvl.1? (I asked the man in Kiloude City and he says these "This Pokemon's potential is decent all around." & "Incidentally, I would say its greatest potential lies in its Defense stat" & "Stats like those... They simply can't be beat! That's how I judge it." )

When is a perfect time to do Super Training? Should I start training right now? Before my Eevee gets more levels? Also, I wanted to ask. should I start super training from level 1 or level 3? Do my Pokemon levels affect Super Training, like, I should start from level 1 because my Pokemon is low leveled?

    Thank you in advance! :)

  • I'm not sure if there is a thread on this site about it, but I have found some good sites on Google that list locations that the stones exist in the game world.

You have to be looking for them between 8 - 9 PM though.

  • What about U-Turn for the Staraptor? If it's EV trained in Atk and Spd, should have little problem hitting and swapping into type advantage or a tank. Then possibly come in on another turn to deal some more damage to the opponent.

I believe that the perfect time to do the Super Training with a Pokémon is right after you get it. That way, you'll have a clean slate to work with. However, you have to keep close tabs on how you want to train them, plus it's best if you do it all the way - if you plan on stopping at anytime, I'd suggest that you don't let it gain any Exp. from actual fights, so that it won't get any EVs that you don't want, & continue on with the super training until you've allocated the values to how you wanted them.

That stat judge in Kiloude: https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Stats_judge

Also, yes, the IV calculators online are typically for level 50 or 100 exactly. But "decent" means pretty low IVs.

So, there is no way to tell if your Pokemon has perfect IVs when it is lvl 1? You have to grow it to Lvl 50 to see?

Yes, there is. If the judge (guy who tells you the IVs) says that stats "can't be beat", then that IV is always 31 which is the best possible. If he lists multiple stats before saying "can't be beat", all those IVs are 31.
The level of the Pokemon doesn't matter when checking with the IV guy.

I think my problem might have been that I found too much of the main game to be 'kill or be killed'. I'd sweep, and if I lost type advantage, so would the game. The fact that I played through underleveled most of the game, giving my enemies a good 10 levels on me, probably didn't help this perception.

Anyway, I'm still having a hard time understanding the meta of these games. Any particularly good places to watch battles take place with insightful commentary on strategy? I'm a pretty fair shake at games in general, but pokemon is significantly different from anything I've played, so much of my general sense is not doing me much good, although I've got a pretty good mind for guessing what my opponent will be doing IF I understand the pokemons moveset enough. Given how big this game is, though, I'm far too often mistaken :D

I do still seem to be dying too early, though, so I think I'm still not too clear on the best way to play less assassiny. Vaporeon is my only real tank, ATM. I do actually like Tanks, but I'm not sure how they're played in this game.

When you enter a pokemon that is less than level 50, will it be put up to 50? If not, what are the best places to level up your pokemon?

YouTube is a good place to search for commentary about strategies, but the best way is to dive into the Spot Battles and lose .... a lot. Eventually you'll figure out how some of the more common strategies work. ;) Don't be afraid to lose matches, it's part of the game.

When you enter a pokemon that is less than level 50, will it be put up to 50? If not, what are the best places to level up your pokemon?

    Enter in where?

In the Maison they are only reduced to level 50, anything below 50 will be that level. The Institute will set them all to level 50. Spot Battles will always set them to level 50. Wifi battles with friends etc. will depend on the rules selected by the one initiating the battle.

For leveling, I recommend the Chateau, you can get a good variety there, and all the gym leaders, E4, and champion will show up after you beat them, if you battle there enough.

Not too sure about your first question; sorry. As for the second, one of the best places to train is, in my opinion, Route 22. There's a lot of high-level Pokémon there, and they'll be giving you a ton of experience. Training against them raises your EVs, too, which is a plus! If you like, you may also train in the restaurants at Lumiose City. By battling there, you will be awarded with various mushrooms. If you sell them, you could be getting a bunch of money as well—killing two birds with one stone. d:

  • So I've been running into this rather irritating problem trying to breed up a Pineco with relevant 31 IVs and such. For the most part, I have 3 in ones that I can work with, (HP/DEF/SDEF) but I'm trying to get Attack in there some place so I can at least give my soon to be Forretress a little punch for his/her Rockslide/Stone Edge. I generally don't think it's a good idea to overly specialise a Poke too much when it has other tools available..

Which brings me to this problem. Before hand, I was just blind breeding, trying to get 31 IV'd guys at random to rebreed with Destiny Knot and all of that.. but Attack isn't showing up still.. and a statistically, 1 stat speifically out of 5 is less likely to show up.. so I turned in some battle points, got myself a Power item, placed it on a Pineco (the breed mate holding an Everstone) .. and I've gone through at least 30, 50 Pineco eggs and not a single one has a 31 IV stat in attack.

I was kind of under the impression that this is what Power items do, give the offspring the chance to hatch with a 31 IV stat.. but I get the feeling I'm doing something wrong.. either that or I'm exceptionally unlucky.. (and trust me, this whole thing with Pineco has been so much more frustrating than with Bulbasaur or Hawlucha) Am I doing something wrong here?

I should post a thread detailing this. Get a pokemon it can breed with that has 31 in the attack, give it the power bracer and the Pineco, which has to be female, the destiny knot. Get about 15 eggs, at least one of those will have all four maxed.

  • How do you evolve sligoo?
Also what is the best way to get a shiny houndour/ eevee
I don't want to get it from a trade

Sligoo evolves when its raining while it levels up. I'm not sure if that means In Game rain, like when you're wandering around and the entire route is getting rain.. or if you have to have Drizzle/Rain Dance and do it yourself.

As for shinies, best way I can think of for those guys is the Mitusada Method. You'll have to grind for it though. Just get yourself a ditto from a different region (Japan Spain Italy Germany France any of these) put both in the day care and start hatching. Eventually you'll get a shiny one, but it could take 10 or 20 .. 200

    Ahh, that makes sense.

I was looking at Serebii and it wasn't entirely clear. Breeding be confusing haha. I'll try this out, thanks!
