  • That is currently what I am going through. Today marks the first day of Ramadan, well at least here in New York City it does. It's the Islamic month where one is to fast from sunrise to sunset everyday for 30 days. That means no food, no water. A lot of people also take it to another level as well, including music, TV, basic stuff that we can consider entertainment.

This thread really isn't about Ramadan, although Ramadan is what inspired the thread. I just wanted to know if you guys have ever fasted before? If so, for how long, why, etc? If not, would you? It's not as easy as you might think.

    Anyway, Ramadan Mubarak!

  • I may have misunderstood your post, but surely going more than a few days without water can kill you? How are you planning on staying alive without drinking something?

I personally have never fasted since I'm an atheist and have no reasons/causes to fast for.

  • It's okay to eat and all that after sunset during Ramadan so no one is going to starve.

I personally would never do anything like this unless I had a doctor tell me I needed to, like in preparation for an operation or something. Going without water for even half a day isn't good for me. I get all lethargic and unmotivated and grumpy without food.

Well, I think you read over the part where I said you fast from sunrise to sunset. After sunset, you're free to pig out. Which includes water.

  • When I had my wisdom teeth out I couldn't eat, drink, or open/ close my mouth more than half a cm.. :/ I also got lock-jaw and couldn't close my mouth fully. It was terrible. It was like that for 2 days where I had nothing but a teaspoon of water or chicken broth occasionally, and Tylenol 3 and other heavy-duty painkillers.
I think after like 4 days I could finally attempt eating something.

I know it's not really fasting.. but.. that's the most extreme I got.

Other than that, I've given up chocolate or sweets for lent and other occasions.. but that's about it.

My mom is a muslim and she does it every Ramadan. I did it before just because I didn't want her fasting alone, but now I don't. Not just because I don't want to go through a whole day without water on 39°C (That's how hot it was outside today, and I go out a lot), but because fasting also means no smoking.

Also, I'm not religious at all, so I don't really see the point in fasting during Ramadan.

I could never see myself fasting. Living without food or water during daylight seems very dangerous for my heal. Especially the water, as dehydration is extremely harmful to me.

Half my family is Muslim so I always wanted to try it out even though I'm not religious, but because of health reasons I'm borderline underweight and can't fast :/ So instead I'm still not kissing until sundown, and to do SOMETHING i'm also not swearing/raising my voice for the month.

Hopefully next year I'll be at a better weight and can fast :) Ramadan Mubarak!

I've never fasted for anything more than a day. However, for various periods of time since entering college, I've limited myself to one or two meals a day instead of three like people usually do. I've been skipping lunch almost every day for about a month now and I usually eat a miniscule breakfast.

I was never Muslim, so I don't fully understand what Ramadan would be like (I was protestant Christian until about 17 or 18, afterwards I became atheist), but I do admire anyone who can actually make the commitment.

  • For Lent, I have given up everything sweet, chocolate and so on. I do it ever year and I like to do it, because I get healthier for those 40 days! XD

  • *Would totally go nocturnal during that month* >=D

I've not intentionally fasted but when I used to go to YGO tournaments, I would sometimes not eat throughout the day - though I'd still drink water. Just cause there wasn't much time between rounds to grab anything to eat lol.

  • I've never fasted or made myself go without anything in any way. I've just never been able to see the point in it. I've had friends who are like "I'm gonna see how long I can go without ______" and I just think "...why? What are you trying to prove to yourself?"

I'm definitely not a religious person though, so that could have something to do with it :P. Though the instances I was talking about didn't really have anything to do with religion either lol.

  • I'm not that religious, but I still don't fast. I don't want to starve myself until sunset; I'd break the rules. xD

  • Well I don't know if it counts but I'll often forget to eat when food is not made for me. So occasionally I'll just... not eat for two days. I'll maybe have like a glass of water when I end up in the kitchen. But it's not much.

But I have fasted properly, for the 30-Hour-Famine or whatever. idek what it was for because I just go along to hang out with my friends really. Three days on only water isn't actually much effort for me lol. But I don't think this sort of thing is good for me because my body thinks it's starving and hangs onto what I do eat afterwards and I get fat.

  • No. I've never fasted, and I have no intentions to do so.
Considering I reject the idea of Religion I have absolutely no motive to do so, I like food, I don't want to give up something I enjoy simply because I can. If I had to give it up, or fast, for medical reasons, I would, but I'm not going to do so for no reason!~

  • I've fasted for a variety of reasons in the past including religous ones. However, I'm no longer able to fast unfortunately, due to medical reasons.

  • I would, but I notice that I become a useless hunk of butter after six hours or so.

And it's not that I'm anorexic or religious, it's that all the food at home is so bad my body rejects it. I've grown thin, but thankfully it's getting better, both my tolerance and the food.
