Like me... xD The highest level of math I'm good at is Trigonometry, while barely getting an A in Precalc. Anything beyond that and I'll go crazy haha. I think I need to take advanced Physics next year, and I can tell that it will NOT be fun. :P
I wouldn't know if they're actually similar since I haven't played Bravely Default, but it was mostly the graphics and battle scene which struck me. However, what makes IX different from all of the previous DQ games is that random encounters have been completely removed - all enemies now spawn on the field. If you touch them, a battle will start, but you can try to avoid them (assuming they don't chase you). Also, the playable party members are fully and visibly customizable, and they can all be designed from scratch at the same time (including their names and gender). I never really cared for the previous Dragon Quest games, but I guess the main reason I enjoyed DQIX so much was because of those two differences alone, combined with the well-written story.
I haven't familiarized myself with the Final Fantasy franchise, but I decided to watch the trailer anyway since you brought it up. The graphics are incredibly realistic, and then I searched for screenshots of the original version, which looked hard to take seriously after seeing the remake trailer. (Though to be fair, it was a PS1 game. :P) I think one of the news articles said that the game was going to take an "episodic" approach. Does that mean they're gonna split it up into multiple games? :o
Okay, I'll probably get on it once we plan out a time later. What's your time zone, by the way?
