Not so much equating. Just suggesting that the anti-millennial comment most likely happened because today's kids are a lot less violent and hateful, so their stupidity isn't recognizable by older people and they are vilified for that. I don't see anyone saying "I'm losing hope in this generation" about our large population of young Americans that are casually racist and homophobic, because that problematic behavior is cross-generational.
