  • I believe this belongs here

Just a small question on terminology you guys use. When your Pokemon hits zero health points, do you consider him "fainted" or "dead", or something else? I've seen people use both. Is there any particular reason as to why you say what you say?

  • I usually say "oh he's dead" or "oh he's out" or something. Fainted is two syllables and requires effort to say.

  • I say fainted or he is out. Cause if you are ever out of your pokemon it says something like you "whited out" or you "blacked out". I would say the Pokemon died if it was like Cubone mother. Then again if a Ghost faints then they are already dead so how could they die? Even though Ghosts hatch from Eggs and what not(guess that would be for a different topic).

  • I just say he's "fainted". "dying" is a different story, because you can't really say that it died since you're going to revive it again after the battle.

  • When I'm typing, I usually say "X defeated Y, X beat Y, or usually:

    X used Thunderbolt
    Y used Splash
    X used Thunderbolt (KO)

  • I make light fun of it with my friends and say "crap, he ded. Oh well, Poke Center ho'!"

But it'll always be fainted to me. It's fainting for a reason. If your pokemon DIED then you wouldn't have that pokemon anymore. Not to mention it wouldn't be able to be revived from death. That's just creating a ton of zombie problems we don't need right now.

I like to think that fainting is just that. The pokemon fought so hard that it fainted or has no more stamina to fight. It's like with the anime. The pokemon pass out on their side with swirly eyes then the fight is over. They're not dead, they just got the wind knocked out of them.

And the Poke Center lets them get some rest, and revives are like energy drinks. It's just silly to say they're really dead, unless you're playing a nuzlocke like -weeper- said.

  • I use "fainted" and "died" interchangably. I usually use "fainted" if I've only recently read it and "dead" if I'm telling someone about a battle. It's a force of habit more than anything.

  • Fainted is the correct term and I use it when recalling a time when my Pokemon has gone down, on the internet. I tend to say "died" more often, irl.

  • I say "knocked out" when typing it out or when I'm trying to speak carefully, but I do have a tendency to say that they're "dead" if I'm speaking without thinking.

I never use the term "fainted" as it implies that my pokemon just hyperventilated as opposed to simply being down and unable to fight ("knocked out" as used in boxing or wrestling).

I say that they died. I even say I died if I lose a battle, haha.

  • I always say that they fainted. Saying that a Pokemon died just feels...wrong for some reason. :/

Generally I say "down" or "out". Fainted is long and seems kind of odd to me.

  • I have a pretty bad temperament so whenever the game makes me mad(usually through being immobilized from infatuation or confused) I refer to "making the pokemon faint" as killing them. So yeah, I usually say faint unless I'm mad at the game.

I only say "died" when playing either a hack (where in the story a Pokemon dies) or when reffering to the Marrowak.

  • It's all lingo, I say that they fainted but when someone says died I don't mind. In games where there are hordes of enemies (be it monsters or humans) I refer to them as duded.

"Whoa! There are so many dudes in this level"
