Anyone playing PMD DX?

This game came out over a week ago now, anyone been playing or planning on buying the game? Where are you currently?? What's your team? (Mine is Torchic and Totodile :D)

I'm waiting for a price drop.
I was excited to buy the game but $80 CAD is far too pricy for this game. If it were $50 or something I would have bought it in a heartbeat.

yea same. i like PMD a lot but i'm not even fully comfortable paying that much for a main series release, for a spinoff it's def too much

i am! idk, i put nearly fifty hours into this and i feel like it's worth pretty much every penny i paid for it. granted, i've been into PMD since i was a kid, so there's definitely a nostalgia factor here, but even i was a bit apprehensive as to whether or not DX would live up to my expectations. after super pmd, i was a bit wary of how the next installment of the series would go, and thankfully this did not disappoint at all. DX has some new and interesting mechanics to keep things a bit more fun too, at least imo.

I've put about 60 hours into it thus far, and I'm still working on recruiting one of everything...although I have no idea how long I'll persevere with it, considering Miltank can only be found at the bottom of Purity Forest outside of random fainted Pokemon in dungeons - a place I am not prepared to run a second time after it took me about 10 hours just to get to the bottom the first time - and Riolu only in Mystery Houses, and I have a passionate hatred for RNG. It's been an aesthetically enjoyable experience, but I can't say I've enjoyed it as much as I did the original, or even Explorers of Sky. No Friend Areas makes this inferior to the original. I can't believe that after putting so much love and care into the game, they'd be lazy in the most important area. Literally all I've wanted out of every PMD game since they took it out are for them to add Friend Areas back in, and they still couldn't be bothered this time.

I haven't purchased it yet! I'm saving up a bit more but there's no way that I'm not getting this game! I bought a Switch exclusively for Pokémon games, after all! Besides, the PMD spinoff games are my absolute favourite and I was fearful that they would be discontinued. Therefore, it is essential that I play this game and I should have it within the next few weeks or so.

currently nearly sixty hours in. kinda debating on my other options/things to do.

i should probably focus on strengthening the Flygon i recruited, as that's part of a second rescue team that i'm forming. i also feel like there's a sense of conclusion coming because i'm Hyper rank, which means i'm pretty much two ranks away from reaching the final rescue rank. there's going to be a "what should i really do" moment afterwards, which is going to be a bummer.

rescuing people is fun though, because i get good items out of it. i might stick to that.

I agree with you on this. I have been a longtime fan of the mystery dungeon series, but the price they're asking for is just too much for a remake with no new storylines in my opinion.

yeah, I do think it's pretty expensive too, probably not worth the full price imo :( fortunately I'm able to play through my boyfriend's account, so no need to pay! though I'm taking it reaaaally slow lol. still in the lv. 18-20 mark.

Omg 60 dollars is a lot of money oh what to do? *proceeds to buy Super Mystery Dungeon for 3DS on Amazon* :P It was only 36 dollars so HA! I believe the game will be here on Thursday.

EDIT: By the way, I had Gates To Infinity (another PMD game for 3DS) at one point...don't buy that one. It was weird.

I picked it up and have certainly enjoyed it. I've put almost 96 hours into it and done most of what's present, except getting Mew, Jirachi and Celebi. Someday I'll get back to them.

yeah I'm also just waiting for a sale. Not going to pay full price for a game I've already played.

I started playing!! I'm an Eevee and my partner is a Chikorita! I'm really enjoying the game so far and I have so much nostalgia whilst playing it! I really do love the soundtrack especially and I appreciate how similar it is to the original Blue/Red rescue team games!

I'm about 8.5 hours in and I'm about to travel through Mt. Thunder!!

I think that depends on what you'd want out of the game.

It definitely has a better narrative than the core Pokemon titles, although that isn't saying much at all really - as far as JRPG narratives go, it's about average. Your mileage may vary with this. You could definitely do better if you're looking for story. If you've got the money for this, you could better spend that money on any number of story-driven JRPGs instead.

If you're the completionist type it's definitely worth getting, because you can recruit every Pokemon from Gens I-III with Gen IV evolution links included, so there's a fair bit to do. This will keep you going for AGES. Took me about 75 hours, and I got lucky with mystery houses, which is the only way you can recruit Riolu/Lucario, so yeah. Recruitment is much less painful than it was previously (except for Kecleon, which is just as painful as it always was) so that's nice...the original PMD titles had pretty horrific rates for some Pokemon. Gameplay-wise, it's a very repetitive game: there isn't really much variety at all in the types of missions you'll get (find a Pokemon, escort a Pokemon, find an item, deliver an item to a Pokemon, that's about it) and the dungeons are pretty samey really: one deep water dungeons looks pretty much the same as the next. It's very pretty, but you can only traverse so many narrow corridors and large rooms before you stop caring. Whether this bothers you or not will depend on your patience and how invested you get in it, but don't expect a huge amount of variety here.

In terms of difficulty...well, it's an easy game, once you know what you're doing. It's more about the items you use rather than the level and type of your Pokemon (although these are obviously factors, but levelling up is slow as hell in this and grinding for levels will not be a thing here) and there are some postgame dungeons which restrict what you can take with you, reset your level, and so on, so you'll definitely get some challenge out of that...although truthfully it's mostly RNG-based and can be cheesed with certain Pokemon with certain abilities....or grinding the hell out of gummis and boosting your stats to 255. There are a lot of cheap mechanics in this game too: moves like Heat Wave will hit everything in the entire room, Agility can give Pokemon multiple turns in a row, traps can completely debilitate you, and Monster Houses are always a fun experience. So be prepared for some frustration. This is more outside of the main story, but it's worth mentioning. It's not hard in terms of the genre, but if this is your first experience with dungeon crawling games like this...yeah, be prepared.

If you've played Blue/Red Rescue Team before, you've played this. One thing worth noting (at least in my opinion) is that it doesn't have Friend Areas, which were a huge draw of the original games. There was something very satisfying in watching spirte versions of Pokemon move around in colourful backgrouns, but this takes the worst part of that system - paying for Friend Areas - and combines it with the general laziness that was the list-based Chimecho Assembley and combines them into one awful Rescue Camp system. Basically, you have to buy camps to recruit Pokemon, so a lot of what you'll come across you won't be able to get without going back for it later...or grinding a hell of a lot so you can afford to buy the areas. Some don't unlock until late game either so there's that too.

Personally, I would say get Super Mystery Dungeon if you're in the market for a PMD title, because it's better than this. The narrative is about the same quality but it has more Pokemon in it to recruit, you don't have to buy camps to recruit things, and whilst there isn't much variety in that one either, it's not quite as broken...this game did not get much in terms of QoL updates to gameplay outside of the visuals (which are VERY pretty now, I should mention), making Pokemon slightly easier to recruit, and a complete overhaul of the Gummi system that makes it harder to get abilities but allows you to completely steamroll the game by boosting your stats to max levels in a few hours once you unlock certain areas. If you're in the market for a new Switch JRPG...god, I could list so many better choices. Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth, Disgaea 4, Dragon Quest XI S, Octopath Traveler, Ys VIII, Final Fantasy XII...it's not hard to find a better JRPG than this in terms of both gameplay and narrative.

tl;dr - save your money and buy it used (because as we all know, Nintendo don't believe in discounts on their core IPs) if you really want to play it. But there are better games you can spend your money on.

no friend areas?? wow that's like the one thing i still remember fondly from the original games. what the heck :(
i was definitely expecting an easy game because nintendo, and i am very bad at games so that was kinda fine with me, but maybe i'll go watch a bit of a Lets Play and see how it feels.

I think Dawn summed it up incredibly well! The lack of friend areas is immensely disappointing, I agree. Perhaps the biggest drawback for me.

I recently purchased Dx and I'm loving it. Mind you, I'm a massive mystery dungeon fan, however, this game has already became a favourite of mine. It certain blows Sword out of the water!

I think waiting to purchase it used is a smart idea! (That's what I should have done, oopsies!) I do think you would enjoy the game though!

i feel terrible saying it but i have still not played more than an hour or so of the game, but have watched a let's play of the entire story and some postgame content... haha oops
