Bad Internet Experiences

Have you had any negative experiences through the internet?

I've gotten pretty lucky so I have never experienced anything too awful. I take most things online with a grain of salt, so it's probably helped.

I was born into a home with the internet already a big thing and accessible, but I didn't care until I was about 10 years old. One of the first things I wanted to do was create my own website, so I went onto one of those free domain building places.

Of course, I needed people to join my website. So I found Omegle and spammed my website link to everybody. I checked the next day, and there was gore and pornography spammed all over my forum section. 10 year old me didn't even want to go back on my website and I think I abandoned the entire thing.

I'm so sorry to hear that pal. I have heard that Omegle is not a good place, though I have never really tried it, and never would I want to.

It's alright lad, no need to be sorry. At age 10 I shouldn't have been on omegle unsupervised anyhow.

  • Definitely got a thousand different viruses from all those Softonic downloads as a kid. Can't remember much aside from that.

My mom though once got a death threat from one of her online "friends" on some obscure social media site. That was a scary couple weeks.

  • A young child being left to their own devices on the internet without supervision is never a good idea, believe me. They stumble upon all sorts of terrible things. I was one of those children!

I have vague memories of these shady chatrooms from when I was around 10 or 11. I'm not sure how I got there. But I managed to set up my own account with the intention of making friends... and as soon as I set up a cute, girly avatar, everyone did want to become my "friend". A bunch of strangers started private messaging me and wanted to, erm, role-play. Being so naïve (and quite stupid, honestly), I went along with it, thinking that's just what people do on the internet, or something. Then the role-plays became extremely NSFW, so I tried to make excuses to get away. Why I didn't shut things off completely is beyond me - perhaps I was morbidly curious about it all!

I thought I found solace with a female friend, but turns out she was lesbian and just as creepy toward me as the guys (unless she actually was a guy herself, lol). This whole experience destroyed my trust in online interactions for many years. I thought everyone I encountered was a "rock spider" (as my mum calls them) who were out to get me!

Apart from that, I did have an extremely creepy experience here on PC with a staff member back in 2014, but thankfully they were permabanned the same year. A few other members acted friendly initially as well, only to become creepy and clingy later.

But I've learnt from my experiences and have not had any like them for a long time!

  • - ""dated"" a guy online for like 3 months when we were 12 and he came back round when we were 19 and blew up at me for "ruining his life and making him turn to drugs and ending up a teen dad"

    - being okay friends with someone in their mid-20s when i was 17 and ending up with them trying to ""sensual roleplay"" with me

    - made a friend, participated in group voice chats like 3x a week with this friend, later it came out that this 30yo man with a wife and child was a 2+ year long facade put on by an 18-yo girl just to. have the satisfaction of fooling people or whatever

i been burned a few times lmao we good tho

  • About half of mine were due to my own behavior when I really shouldn't have been using the internet or social media due to my mental state. I take responsibility for this and I feel bad about it to this day.

However, there are a few that were...others being creeps.

    1. A man trying to get me to date and move in with him as soon as I turned 18.
    2. I used to be on GFX forums and literally every guy flirted with me because I'm a woman.
    3. A long distance relationship where she cheated on me and tried to force me to write r*** RPs with her.
    4. A 26 year old using my (16 at the time) selfie as a desktop image.

I 100% know what that's like. It STILL happens to me on other platforms, and it's exasperating! Funnily enough, if I present myself as masculine simply by changing my avatar, it all stops. So I've started doing that just to avoid strangers coming on to me for my avatar. Which is a shame because I identify very closely with my femininity.

The worst ones have you on rotation, so when all the other girls they know are offline/unavailable/reject them, they come flirt with you.

Thing is, I'm ugly as shit, so I never post photos of myself. I kind of wish I did before so they'd stop instantly.

I play online games and I always fell for such treacherous tricks that one time I fell to someone who promised an upgrade and I handed out my password to them, so I kinda lost my account and struggling to get back, fortunetly I was able to and second thing just got banned for thinking I hack the game which isn't again despartely trying to get it back again.
