    When They Cry
    Introduction

Welcome to Hinamizawa: When they Cry. This is a smaller variant of the typical forum-mafia games found here in The Underground.

Mafia is a game that pits two groups against each other in a bid for survival. The first group consists of the uninformed majority, generally known as the innocents who need to find the mafia hidden in their midst and eliminate them. The second group, generally called the mafia, are the informed minority that hide amongst the innocents and try to take them out.

More information can be found in the Newbie Snail's Guide and the Underground Guidelines.

    Story

    Spoiler Warning

Deep in the mountains of Japan, a small village named Hinamizawa sits in near isolation. At first glance this seems to be a peaceful place, but there are many dark undertones in Hinamizawa - first and foremost the strange curse of Oyashiro-sama, the guardian deity of the town.

Around this time every year, people die or go missing in what seems to be a recurring cycle of vengeance from the powers above. The truth of the matter however is perhaps even more disturbing. Each and every person in the village, is infected by a dangerous parasite that if triggered sends people into fits of paranoia and anxiety. In an effort to prove this parasite's existence, someone is prepared to wipe out the whole village.

    The Village

These are your "ordinary" citizens of Hinamizawa, they are the "innocent" during this game.

Maebera, Keiichi - A highly intelligent, loyal and charismatic teenager of Hinamizawa. Keiichi has the ability of using his charisma to convince one person not to use any night action they might have (Except Takano Miyo). Keichii has a 30% chance to go insane if Oishi investigates him. If he visits Hojo Teppei, he will automatically kill him and become insane.

Sonozaki, Mion - The twin of Sonozaki Shion and heir to the Sonozaki family that essentially rules Hinamizawa from behind the scenes. She knows who Shion is and can speak with her in private. If Maebera Keiichi dies, she will become insane. If Sonozaki Oryu dies, she will gain her ability to influence votes.

Sonozaki, Shion - The twin of Sonozaki Mion, however she was born second and therefore has no right to inherit the position of the family's matriarch. When Sonozaki Oryu uses her ability there is a 50% chance that Shion will kill her in the night phase and become insane.

Furude, Rika - The inadvertent head of the Furude family and the shrine maiden of the shrine to Oyashiro-sama, the deity of Hinamizawa. She is the carrier of the queen parasite and shares a spiritual connection to Oyashiro-sama. As the carrier of the queen, Rika is immune to insanity, however her death will trigger a large-scale outbreak of Hinamizawa syndrome. If Takano Miyo is alive when Rika dies, the mafia win. If Rika is going to be lynched she can switch her role with another player, however this ability only works whilst Miyo Takano is alive. She knows the identity of Furude Hanyu.

Furude, Hanyu - Hanyu is truly the incarnate form of Oyashiro-sama. She has given herself human form to protect Rika and Hinamizawa more actively but maintains some of her spiritual power. So long as Hanyu is alive, Rika will be revived upon her death preventing a catastrophic outbreak of Hinamizawa syndrome. She knows the identity of Furude Rika.

Hojo, Satoko - Satoko is a young mastermind of trap making with a very troubled past. Every night phase she can place a trap at the home of one player. If someone is hit by a trap they have a 50% chance of dying and a %50 percent chance of being injured, which will cause a clue as to their identity to be shared. If one of her traps kills Maebera Keiichi, Satoko will become insane. If Maebera Keiichi dies whilst Hojo Teppei is still alive, then she will lose her night action and become insane in two night phases.

Ryugu, Rena - Rena is a teenaged resident of Hinamizawa who is very sensitive to the topic of Oyashiro-sama. She is a useful ally but is also highly unstable. Being extremely perceptive, Rena will learn the identity of anyone who visits her during the night and upon her death will release a complete list of any insane that have visited her. Unfortunately, Rena also carries a very high risk of becoming insane herself. Every night that Mamiya Rina is alive, there is a 30% chance that Rena will go insane. Similarly, every time Rena is visited there is a 50% chance she will become insane.

Oishi, Kurado - Oishi is a police officer from a nearby city that is investigating the "Curse of Oyashiro-sama" murders. Once per night he is able to investigate a player's alignment, however he hits his retirement on night four and will lose his night action as a result.

Sonozaki, Oryu - The incredibly old matriarch of the Sonozaki household. She holds a lot of political power in Hinamizawa, especially over her own family. Once during the game she has the ability to influence the votes of Mion, Shion and Kasai. If Mion dies before her death, she will become insane.

Kasai, Tatsuyoshi - Kasai is employed by the Sonozaki family as a bodyguard for Shion. Should Shion be targeted for the mafia kill, he has a 30% chance of dying instead.

Mamiya, Rina - A despicable woman who manipulates people into giving her money, she intends to marry Rena's father for his amassed fortune. As long as she is alive, every night carries a 30% chance that Rena will go insane. So long as Hojo Teppei is alive she must visit a player every night in order to steal from them.

Hojo, Teppei - Satoko's uncle and primary caregiver. He is a terrible person and a criminal and it is well known that he mistreats Satoko to the point of abuse. If Oishi investigates him, he will always appear as guilty. If he is investigated, he will go insane.

Kimiyoshi, Kiichirou - The head of the village. Once during the game Kimiyoshi can cancel a lynching. After doing so he will become paranoid and may become insane.

Regular Villages - People with no role but a high chance of becoming insane. When insane they may gain a new role.

    Yamainu

This game's "mafia" faction. They are a secret group operating within Hinamizawa, it is their goal to let loose Hinamizawa Syndrome to vindicate their research.

Takano, Miyo - The leader of the mafia group. She seeks to kill Furude Rika and release the full fury of the Hinamizawa syndrome in order to vindicate the work of her deceased father, an ostracised scientist working on parasites. She gets the final say in all mafia kills and wins the game if she successfully kills Rika.

In addition to this Miyo is immune to insanity and will appear as an innocent if investigated by Oishi early in the game. Unfortunately for her, she will gradually become easier to discover as the game continues.

Tomitake, Jiro - A subordinate of Takano Miyo that is helping her further her research. He is a vanilla mafia role except upon his death, which will cause a random character to begin to go insane. If Miyo dies before him, he will go insane.

Irie, Kyousuke - Irie is technically a member of the mafia, however he doesn't know about Takano Miyo's true objective. As such, he is able to win with either the mafia or the village. Dr. Irie has the ability to once during the game save one character from insanity. If Takano Miyo dies, he becomes an ordinary doctor role. Irie does not know any of the mafia and does not participate in their conversations.

Okonogi, Tetsuro - A vanilla mafia until the death of Takano Miyo. If Miyo dies he will become a vanilla villager.

    Insanity

The Insane are players who have given in to Hinamizawa syndrome. They are unpredictable in what their actions may or may not be and in their goals. The Insane win if they outnumber the other factions.

I really shouldn't be signing up for this game.
