6th Gen Pre-order or eShop?

    Just a small question I've been having on whether or not I should pre-order Pokémon X/Y or buy it from the Eshop.

    I've never done either so I am not familiar with how exactly it works, but I guess they are both self explanatory. My only worries about pre-ordering is that it will take a few extra days to deliver to my town, and seeing as I am impatient I would like to play the game on the 12th. Where as the Eshop I would get it ASAP (I am assuming.) On the other hand if I buy from the Eshop I wouldn't have a physical copy of the game. What do you guys propose is the best solution?

    And just so this thread stays relevant, how are you guys getting the games? And when as well I s'pose.

    Actually, with Preorders, it shouldn't take a few days to get to your town. It should be there on the day, or even the day before the release. Gamestop will most likely even have a Midnight Release event for it, because of how big the games are. The point of Pre-orders is so they know how many copies to have on the day of release.

    E-Shop does mean you don't have to worry about a game, but the 3DS has save data backups and the ability to make a game you already own, a digital copy, so you really don't have to worry about it.
    Pre-order has the added Pre-Order Bonus, which for the U.S. is a nice Poster, (the u.k. got lucky, and gets cool Pokeball Game Cartridge holders)
    I already pre-ordered my copy through Gamestop.
     
    All you do with pre order is go to a place where you want to buy it (Wal-Mart/Gamestop, ect.) and put a payment on it usually it is 5 or 10 dollars or you can pay for it and full. The day of release you go and show them the receipt they give you and they will give you the game after you finish paying for it.

    The Eshop you have to use a credit card such as VISA and it will come out of the bank account and you will have to download it to you 3DS. I don't know exactly how it works, but I would get the game at a store so you will always have it and say if your 3DS breaks or is stolen, you will not lose all your memory. You will have to re download it to the new system if this happens. I am not sure if you have to pay for it again. However, there is probably a type of back up so this will not happen. I would still get a copy of the game and not a digital. I always hated the idea of digital copies.

    Downloaded games are registered to an account, as long as you can access the count you can redownload it for no charge. And you can also backup saves to the account as well, so any memory lost can be recovered....I think.
     
    Damien is right, if the memory is lost or even if you lose or change a SD card you can download it again free of charge if you bought it in your account. I did this this month upon getting a new SD card with Fire Emblem Awakening. It also works for the DLC btw ;).
     
    I think it would be better if you just pre-order the game, haha. Where I live, I get my games delivered as soon as they're released if I pre-order online. You may get the same results, but I'm not exactly sure. You could download this game from the eShop if you like, but you're going to need a large memory card to hold all of that data. D:
     
    Quick question: Has anyone pre-ordered a game from Amazon? If so, do they usually get shipped the day of release, and therefore, arrive a couple days afterward. Or, do they send the games out a day or so early?
     
    Personally I feel more comfortable buying physical copies but I don't have a huge problem with downloading when it's the only option.

    I think the main issue with downloaded content is that you're not as in control of it as a physical copy. As long as you take care of a physical copy it will last a long time, whereas if nintendo suddenly decide they don't want to offer save transfers when the 3ds successor comes out, that's the end of the road. I'm not saying that's likely, just that we don't know.

    I was thinking a potential benefit of having a downloaded copy might be that if they don't have an app for migrating pokemon and it turns out that you need two 3ds to do it...having a download copy would free up the cartridge spot for a 5th gen game so you'd only need one 3ds to migrate. Just a theory though.

    As for preordering, I'm picking up my preorder on the 14th after. I don't get them delivered but depending on the place I hear you can get the game a bit early.

    Like I said in a previous post, For those that preorder from gamestop
    I can almost guarantee they will have a Midnight Release event, just because of the sheer popularity of the games.
    The delivery thing is mostly for those that preorder from the internet, like from Amazon.
     
    Well they both have pros and cons really some which you already stated, pre-ordering would mean you would have the physically copy but it might not arrive on release date which can be a little grueling when others are playing whilst you're waiting. The digital version you can guarantee that you'll have it on 12th assuming it is released simultaneously with the physical copy, however it does require a lot of blocks and an excessive amount of space (14,000 Blocks / 1.7 GB to be exact) but it's upto you.

    With mine I pre-ordered a few months ago from GAME in which I gave a £5 deposit and in exchange they gave me a receipt confirming my pre-order and on the 12th October 2013 which is the release date, so I can go in and pick up my copy which they will keep safe for me on that day. Not sure if they do that in your city but you could try that? If not then just get the eShop version if you can't wait.
     
    I pre-ordered both X & Y way back in February.

    I wouldn't use a digital copy for Pokemon for a few reasons:

    - If I had both downloaded to one 3DS, I couldn't trade between them.

    - I really do not trust Nintendo's "accounts" system on the 3DS eShop at all, so I am wary of purchasing games on there. It's fine when you do a system transfer (I did one between 3DS & XL and it worked well), but if I lost my 3DS I don't know how that would work at all.

    Also as somone else mentioned the save files may not be backed up with the game to prevent duplication. I can't risk losing a Pokemon save file!

    - They take up a lot of space on the SD Card.

    Aaand I just like having the physical copy. Just feels good.
     
    I hate to sound like a broken record...but how does online shopping, Amazon for instance, factor into pre-order arrivals to home?

    Do orders usually arrive to the home on the day of release, or do they usually get shipped on the release date?
     
    I think getting a physical copy is more worthy, you know, if they had lower prices on the eShop then yes but since the price is actually the same with the copy you will buy in stores it is not worthy at all.

    I don't know about other places, but the e-mail Amazon sent me a few days ago explicitly said that the games will arrive to my home on October 12th.

    Oh, and yes, I preordered both games in physical form. Since I'm getting another 3DS, I like to be able to play any of the two games on any of the two consoles, which isn't possible with 3DS digital releases.

    They ship at an earlier date so the product arrives on the release date.
     
    Great! Thanks for letting me know about Amazon's pre-orders! It's good to know that the game should arrive on the 12th.
     
    My only problem with pre-ordering, is that some day, there's a 99% chance (for me at least), to physically lose the cartridge. I'm not actually familiar with how the eShop works, but I wish I'd have dl'ed my New Leaf instead of pre-order, since those cartridges like to hide from me.

    I had problems losing cartridges, when it resulted in the destruction of my Pokemon Diamond I started putting my cartridges in a small plastic container. It just takes a little bit of discipline to keep taking them out and putting them back in again.

    If you have your cartridges strewn all over they're just asking to go missing.

    It's why they sell special containers to organize your games.

    I bought those before, but it was too hard to take cartridges out after I had put them in. So I prefer using my own plastic container.
