Question Of The Day #15: Do you have a healthy balance between PC and real life?
As September has now rolled around, many of us have begun to resume our hectic, fast paced lives once again. Whether it's a job, college, or basic secondary education, a lot of us are now consumed with a lot of daily activities that for the most part take up most of our days. So, my question to you guys is how do you balance your time on PokeCommunity from all the other craziness happening in your life? Do you feel like one outweighs the other? Do you ever feel like you go on PC too much? Or not as much as you wish you could nowadays? For staff members, do you find it difficult to juggle your staff duties now that fall has rapidly approached?

Feel free to discuss all entities of his question below.

I remember when I had a job at a factory doing packaging that I had to learn how to balance out and cope without getting on PC for a few hours, but then I had a falling out with the people there and as a result I became more active here.

The one confession I can make is yes, PC life does outweigh my real life.

I feel pretty relaxed with PC and staff duties, I just wish I had more opportunity to be on my computer and hang around the Roleplay Corner more properly. But RPing is a whole other dimension to PC :p Modding is too, I suppose, but having mod partners in your section really helps you relax if there comes a day when you don't have time to log on.

I used to be on too much. Nowadays I check the forums on my phone on the go when I'm bored or have some time over. Just like I'd check facebook or play a casual game or so. I'm not a gamer like many others here seem to be though, so perhaps I browse PC in times when others would log off and play dem games instead!

I have no real life. O_O

Well, I do... partly I guess. Like, I don't always spend time online, but I do spend most of it online though. However, not all of my time is spent on PC. It's spent on other forums, which I have like two others I go to. Plus, I have my writing site, Skype, Facebook and Livejournal as well.

I hardly ever have any time for PC, but I always try to do my best to come here as often as I can. I'm not losing interest in this place as this is the first place I've ever had a huge history on and have considered my first home. It's just... most of the time I'm doing other things online that need my attention.

I feel like I don't get on PC nearly enough. In fact, I don't get online nearly as much as I used to, and it saddens me greatly. If the hours I've spent online over the past ten years were added up and compared to the hours I spent doing things in the real world, I probably have spent more hours online. However, such an internet addiction isn't really healthy, and I moved to a place without any internet other than slooooow satellite internet, so I suppose I've finally found a healthy median.

I do wish I had at least a few more free hours per day to get on PC, though. x:

Balance? What's balance? There is only imbalance :P

Real life outweighs PC life for me, simply cause I only come on PC nowadays for friends and my gf :P

I really don't have a balance nor do I need one. I don't have any real life responsibilities other than spending time with my girlfriend. If I am not busy with her than I am playing Pokemon and on PC.

I feel like if you feel like you need to balance PC with your life then you might have a problem. In the past I've been addicted to PC to the point where I felt I needed to balance my life with it to still be a prominent part of my life but not my whole life, and during that time I was in a very unhappy place because of just how much I put into this place. I attempted to leave many times and to no avail. I didn't have much going on in my life and when I'm not doing anything and I'm home I'm usually on the internet which means I'm on here. But you should never really feel like you have to balance PC with your life. PC is part of it whether you like it or not until you decide to remove it completely, which is usually easier said than done. Just treat PC like what t is. A hobby. Do it in your spare time but don't let it consume you. It should never become your life or get to the point where it consumes your time and prevents you from living your life.

I like your comment a lot. Just one thing I have to question. What if you don't really have a life and your "spare time" is around 10-14 hours a day depending on the day. I mean like myself I don't see PC as my life. I do see it as a spare time but when you have so much spare time it feels like it becomes your life and its not because you choose or don't choose it to be but for the simple fact like you said "spare time". My life revolves around paying bills to be able to live and my girlfriend. When the first week of the month is over and I am done bills, shopping and ect. For the next 3 weeks I have nothing else going on other than my girlfriend, Pokemon and PC. So does it become acceptable to consider this spare time since it is my free time but I have so much of it or is it considered my life. It's not like I revolve Pokemon and PC around it but since I have nothing better to do...

    Do you have a job?

No I don't nor have I ever worked or will ever need to work. I have inheritance that I get so much of monthly for the rest of my life that my parents left me upon there death for when I turned 18.
A job doesn't just have to be a thing you need to do in order to make enough money to get by. It can also be something you do in order to fill your life with something that you like (hopefully) and to meet people. :)

This can also be true but I don't feel the need for the above two.

^ To be fair, there are a lot of kids that are in situations where they don't need to work, and why would anyone want to just for the hell of it at that age? In time he might find out that he wants to.

I don't really feel like one out-weighs the other, PC is a free time thing nowadays. When I was still on staff sometimes PC came before my offline life, but to be fair, my offline life was messed at the time, so I didn't really care. lmfao

Nowadays my staff ranks on other forums, time spent here, and my actual job all coincide okay.

I'm kind of surprised you have a girlfriend if that's the attitude you have towards working.

Why would having a girlfriend be a surprise just because the attitude I have towards a job. When you have a income of 5,000 dollars a month and can pay all your bills, put food on the table and still have plenty of money to have fun without working I don't see a issue. I don't think any women wouldn't want to be with a man just because they don't work. Its about being able to support yourself and your family. Also the statement about being a kid. How is 20 being a kid? I turn 21 next month as well. I have a child on the way in February. I don't see the sense in trying to develop a career or get even a part time job when I am already covered for life. If someone can tell me a reason why anyone would want to work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week when they already have enough of a income and plenty left over each month I would be glad to hear it. Most people I have known hate working and only work because they need the income to support their self. It's not about making yourself feel like you have a purpose or filling in free time. I don't know one person who would rather work 8 hours a day then play video games 8 hours or even spend 8 hours doing other things at home/hobbies.

To go back onto subject though. I think I feel like Pokemon is my Life. I spend most my time awake playing Pokemon. As far as PC I get on daily but I am not as active as I wish I could be with my 10-12 hours free time daily, hopefully this will change in the next week or two. In the end though if I am not playing Pokemon or on PC then the only other possible thing I could be doing is spending time with my family. Overall I am happy with not needing balance and my life though. I have been this way for years now and I am not ever going to change except maybe for the first few months after my baby is born but even then I will be active daily.

    So much envy. :p

Nah, on a different note, you may not want a job, but don't think of it as a job. And because you have the monetary ability to pay for expenses you can actually have the freedom to do something that you like, and still not think of it as a job because you're not doing it because you have to (ie. salary) bit because you feel that it's fun. Or you could try a dozen different things. Start a business, learn some skills, learn a language etc. It's great to have that sort of freedom where you're able to do so many things in life that other people wouldn't be able to do because jobs are a way of keeping them afloat. Just my two cents, but it's your life, and you do as you see fit. Experiment with new things, and live life to its fullest. :)

And by getting a job you like, you not only get to have fun with it ( where so many people can't because they need the money), you also effectively are being a contributing member of society. That's the purpose of human life in my opinion. To live your life today and make the life of the next generation better through improving the world as a civilization and pushing the human race foward, rather than just relying on resources left to you. It also stimulates your brain, and keeps you active and healthy. It's the harsh reality of life for most people. Even though you may be steallar academically and have a wonderful job and have a gret salary you can't buy time. Not everyone hates their jobs. People who work in chairity organizations etc probably enjoy their job, otherwise they wouldn't be working there. And heck, you must have an interest, even if it's just a small spark, to take the degree course of your choice ( if you're able to). Seize the chance that most people don't have and make the most out of it by helping the world as a whole.

Sometimes, you have to put irl first. PC must be waaaay down on your priority list. You definitely have a problem if you put PC first.

I'm able to balance PC (staff duties and all that) with work and school, thanks to phone access as well as my tablet (which I rarely use haha). As long as I have wifi, I find myself accessing during my downtime. If I find myself in a hectic situation, I usually let everyone know. Right now, things irl are alright.
