[PokeCommunity.com] VGPOTW #3: Time For Some Classes!

Welcome to Video Game's Poll of the Week! Thanks to the permission of Pokemon General's moderator Brendino, Video Games will now be hosting a weekly series that pits certain video game characters, levels, and universes against other to see which one will come out on top! In last week's Poll of the Week, Portal 3 gunned it's way through the other Valve games to be voted as the most anticipated Valve threequel.
Expand on your answers! Tell us why you prefer one video game element over another! Posts that don't elaborate as to why specific elements were chosen will be deleted, and a warning may be given out through an infraction if it's a reoccurring issue.
This week's VGPOTW was nominated by our very own Juno, and as thanks she will be receiving an emblem! If you have a matchup that you would like to see, whether between video game characters or worlds/universes, send me a VM or PM and if your matchup gets chosen then an emblem will be given out as a reward!

    Without further ado:

What RPG class or job do you prefer?

Whenever I'm able to, I try to make my characters magic based. I just really love magic in most games, and I'm not the biggest fan of brute strength. I do like stealth builds, though. I feel like a ninja sneaking around doing things.

Also, healers are usually extremely useful in most of the games I've played where healers are present. Keeping party members alive and fighting is very important.

    Ctrl C, Ctrl V.

I'm a pretty stubborn player myself. I don't tend to use too much strategy, I rather just rush up to the enemy and bash its head in so I usually build my character to be more of a berserker type and denounce magic and ranged attacks, those things really just upset me and make me mad and want to kill them even more.

Armor is not necessarily needed, it just slows me down and keeps me from successfully landing the death blow on my first blow.

I absolutely adore magic classes. Magic-based characters just suit me so much better than any other. I also like my medics and other support characters, and stealth classes are usually where I head first when a more arcane path isn't readily available.

But mages though. They're always my first choice in games. Limited magic can leave me wanting, so I might supplement it with a bow or the like, but usually I can do pretty well with just magic. For example, Aqua from Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep is my favorite character both because I adore her and I can easily wreck things by constantly utilizing magic. In games like Bravely Default, I balance my characters, but I still favor magic classes.

Though in classless games I sometimes have a nasty habit of just charging recklessly into battle.

When I play a game, I generally go either Mage or Rogue. In Western games, I lean towards Rogues because to me, they tend to be better for up-front action in battles. In most JRPGs, I go with mages. Either way, I don't want any of the attention on me. Leave that to the tank. I just wanna do lots of damage or sabotage the enemy and stay the hell out of the line of fire.

I... don't play any RPGs, so it's a little tough for me to answer this poll. Based on other types of games that I play with similar characters, I'd guess that the rogue class would suit me best, as a prefer a tactical, stealthy style of fighting, rather than being a heavy hitter. I could see mage being my secondary class, but I don't really see myself using much of the other 3 unless necessary.

    Mage. Always mage.
Since I play JRPGs mainly, I want something unreal in normal RPGs as well and throwing fireballs or so is supernatural enough for me =D

For all you Mage users, do you have a favorite kind of spell from a game you like to play? Also, would you use your Mage more in an offensive role or a defensive one?

I can't really C+V my post in the other thread, so...

My favorite class would be the mage. I am a fan of magic spells. I have a tendency to use either Fire-based or Water/Ice-based spells on most of the games I play. The idea of having supernatural powers is just really cool, which is why I tend to use the mage role.

Cleric's also one of my favorite class to use. They're normally the most strategic of the lot, with the buffs and support and such, so they're really fun to use.

In certain games I'll have a favorite spell, and in others I use a variety. Usually I'll try to use what best fits the situation, such as when an enemy has an elemental resistance, or in Skyrim, I'll use frost spells on a physical enemy and spark spells on an opposing mage. In general I prefer Lightning Storm as my offensive spell in Skyrim.

My mages are typically balanced. Sometimes I'll have a White Mage or a Black Mage that's primarily defensive/offensive in games where that separation exists, or I'll mix skills as a Red Mage. In games like Kingdom Hearts, I use my magic almost completely offensively, mixing in a few Curagas, Aerogas, and Reflegas here and there. I also enjoy conjuring allies or using summons in games where such things exist, allowing me to cover deal more damage while also taking some of the heat off of my character.

Really the main connecting factor is that I heavily favor magic, and I love to cast it in all its forms. You can do so much with it, and it can do some awesome things that other play styles can't if you learn how to manipulate it well enough.

Varies between games, but I usually use either mage or fighter, or a mix of the two.

For spells, I tend to prefer ranged or status spells.

Haha, I feel like the total odd-man out. Mages or Rangers for me. :)
Admittedly, that's mainly because when they're available, I like to play as an Elf. Elves are usually locked to archers and/or mages. Or at least, they were. Not terribly sure about more recent games as I haven't played that many RPGs in the last few years.

Like most of the others who picked Mages have said, I just prefer to keep my distance from the fighting; I don't like being the tanky type.

That said, I still prefer pure, raw damage for magic. I'm pretty indifferent to anything that damages over time. Elemental magic, Blood Magic.. those I'd prefer. Fire can be hit and miss with its burning effects, but as long as the initial blow is decent, I don't much care about the aftershocks.
Still, I'm not usually one for poisoning or bleeding effects, things like that. I want to kill it, and I want to kill it now.
In regards to the latest question for Mage characters, you can safely assume that means I prefer being completely Offensive. Only balancing it out when I need to. =p

Rangers are typically my second choice. I'll take that if I get tired of playing a mage, if I need a physical attacker, or if the game simply lacks in a decent mage class. Rangers have their own specialty, though. Many times, they're the only one capable of having an animal friend. Or at least in ye olden days - quite a few of the newer ones I've seen seem to have given this ability to every class to some extent. And also, I like bows. So there's that.

Hm... I don't really have a favorite spell... I just use whatever is most effective...
On the other hand... no one can forget the feeling of firing a fireball xDDDD
And I'm almost always offensive but I don't mind buffer as well.

No particular spells that I like, no, but definitely an offensive mage. I can play white mages but when I do, I don't like micromanaging everyone's HP and am much more interested in adding buffs to the party and then getting angry when my party members keep dying while I'm trying to get everyone to equal buff level. >:/

Probably my favourite Mage to play ever was Jade Curtiss in Tales of the Abyss because he was pretty good up front, too, if need be. Or if someone came up while casting, he wasn't screwed until someone else could come rescue him like a lot of Mages are. But I like standing back and dealing damage more than handling status effects, though I must admit debuffing the hell out of enemies so the rest of the party can wreck them was a lot of fun with Saboteurs in FFXIII/-2, so I liked that kind of mage too.

WAIT NO I LIED. I do have favourite spells. My fave mage combo: Rita and Estelle in Tales of Vesperia... Estelle uses Angel Ring to loop all the enemies into the centre and right as the arte finishes, just before they can get out of the centre, Rita's arte--usually Violent Pain--activates and just destroys everything while the rest of the party stands there somewhat uselessly. Heh.)

Do you like to couple that with a Ranger class? Because that's what I like to do in games like Skyrim for maximum stealth damage.

I like being the Gunzerker... Oh wait, that's not an option >.>

I usually play fighter type characters, or whatever other good options I have for tanking at the time. I do also like playing mages, but they are usually harder to use so I don't really use those on my first play through. I also like to play characters that are good at talking, especially in tabletop games where I sometimes play as silver tongued bards who tell nothing but lies. ;)

So many mages here! I generally prefer melee to ranged, so I tend go for fighters or warriors first. I'm also a fan of the thieves and assassins, so my votes go to the Fighter and Rogue classes.

To be honest I think the reason why I like melee more is probably because they tend to be easier to play - stronger armor/defenses, and it's harder to miss with a sword than a bow, you know. :P

I think stealth is a lot of fun though, when you get the hang of it - can be a bit challenging to sneak up on your enemy without them detecting you, but executing an assassination perfectly is really satisfying.

I do like mages in turn-based RPGs though, with all their spells and such, they tend to have more interesting and useful attacks and supports.

Fighter. Doing lots of damage and beating in the heads of my enemies is just my style.
