Based on host and TPC President Tsunekaz Ishihara's surroundings during today's Pokémon Presents, it looks like a Let's Go! Johto may be on the way. What do you think?

  • Yeah, that's most certainly a possibility. But, would that really be a "big project" considering it's a remake? That's why I'm on the fence about it.

Like the article states, it'd probably detract from the Sword and Shield focus if they launched DP remakes now. Let's Go Johto seems more likely.

Not really, the period between the release of XY and the announcement of ORAS have the same gap as the release of SwSh and DP remakes, if it is indeed the DP remakes...

But I won't be surprised if that "big project" is both DP remakes and the Johto LG (loosely Crystal based)...

But XY didn't have dlc. That's their big thing now.

I'm not sure either Let's Go Johto or DPPt remakes would really classify as a "big project"...or at least, one could not claim Let's Go Johto is somehow less of a remake than hypothetical DPPt remakes would be. They'll have to rebuild the entire region from the ground-up for the Switch either way. If anything Johto might actually be LESS of a big project, because half the game - Kanto - has already been made...although given the limited scope of the Let's Go titles, I find it unlikely a Let's Go Johto would actually include Kanto postgame. Very unlikely. That'd certainly put a bee in the ear of disgruntled players as well, given how miserably threadbare and content-lacking SnS were.

But between the two options, I think I'd prefer Let's Go Johto. As I've said before, I don't want DPPt remakes. Game Freak have royally screwed up everything they've done for the last several years, so this won't be any different. I don't want them ruining my favourite generation as well. I'm happy sitting in my nostalgia bubble, I don't really need them to burst it with a cold hard reality of sub-par visuals, cut content being sold back at a premium as DLC, and diabolical online services.

I suppose there is more evidence for Let's Go Johto, and we're almost guaranteed to get something to that effect at some point, but whether it'll come sooner rather than later...well, maybe, maybe not. I actually think it more likely that we might see an entirely new RPG in the style of Pokemon Collosseum or XD, because we've already got a continuation of an old series in New Pokemon Snap. Something entirely new would definitely qualify as a big project. Although given Game Freak's recent soujourn into new content with the absolutely atrocious Little Town Hero, I certainly hope they're not the ones developing it if that is the case.

  • The more I think about it, the more likely I think the title will be Let's Go Johto (or whatever they'll call it, will just stick to that for now). When you look at the estimated release date for The Crown Tundra, which is gonna be like October/November time I think (I could be wrong)? I really don't think they'll release another mainline game so close to the 2nd DLC coming out maybe.

Also, they could just be saying it's a 'big project' to draw hype to the livestream, but I suppose if it is another Let's Go game, that could be considered a 'big title' just compared to the ones we were shown. Personally, with the DLC timings and everything, I think we'll get DP remakes next year, and this could be another Let's Go game, which I'm completely fine with!

  • Tbh, I agree with Dawn.

    But also.

I just realized that the article mentions that Game Freak is hiring new positions for a new main series Pokemon game...So, while I don't think "Let's Go Johto" or DPPT remakes would be considered the "big project" Ishihara is talking about, I guess it's still possible. I just don't want them.

  • Here's why I think it'll be Colosseum/XD reboots in the style of Let's Go:

Most of the Pokemon shown in the background are in Colosseum/XD as Shadow Pokemon. The Johto starters and the legendary beasts all play significant roles in the games, as does Lugia. Why are Mewtwo and Ho-Oh there? Well, Mewtwo now has a shadow form thanks to Pokken Tournament. And because there are two versions of the games, perhaps Lugia's counterpart will be in the other game as the main Pokemon -- AKA Shadow Ho-Oh (XD002?). While Johto Pokemon are most associated with Gold/Silver for obvious reasons, they were reintroduced in Colosseum/XD as a way for players to fill up their Pokedexs in Ruby/Sapphire due to lack of compatibility between GBC and GBA.

The black Pikachu (left) can be thought of as the shadow version of the main Pikachu (right). They are on opposite sides, the shadows for both plushes are pretty prominent, and they look like near-identical plushes aside from their colorings. It's also curious that a lot of these plushes in the background have prominent shadows, though I admit this could be a stretch.

Umbreon, Eevee, and Espeon all have significant roles in the games. Umbreon and Espeon are your starters in Colosseum, while Eevee is in XD. What better way to have sequels to the original Let's Go games than to have a continuation of Eevee since it has become a mascot for the franchise. And because of their roles, I think the games will be called Let's Go, Umbreon! and Let's Go, Espeon!. Perhaps Shadow Ho-Oh will be in LG:U and Shadow Lugia in LG:E.

Game Freak is looking to the past for future games. Pokemon Snap is finally seeing a sequel, so it wouldn't be unheard of for other games like Colosseum/XD to get the same treatment. Adding to this, Genius Sonority, the developer of Colosseum/XD, has relations with Game Freak again, as they are the ones making the Pokemon Cafe Mix game. Between Bandai Namco working on the Snap sequel and Genius Sonority doing the Let's Go Colosseum/XD games, this would leave Game Freak available to be working on the traditional mainline games, whether that be the 9th-generation games or Diamond/Pearl remakes that are imminent at this point. Nintendo has done this with Grezzo on multiple occasions with Zelda remakes as they have focused on Breath of the Wild and its upcoming sequel.

Pokemon GO is a part of the franchise now. The Pokemon Company recognizes this and wants to continue to leverage its success through the Let's Go games, which act as a bridge between the casual and core audiences. GO reintroduced the Shadow Pokemon and purification mechanics in 2019, which were staples of Colosseum/XD. Ash's counterpart in the new Pokemon Journeys anime is Goh, who is basically the personification of the GO games; his goal is merely to catch all Pokemon, not battle with them like Ash. It's also oddly coincidental that they throw in the phrase "Let's go" in Journeys quite frequently. Lastly, the Let's Go engine is complete and ready to use for other games; LG:PE have sold 12 million copies as of March, so clearly they have been a success and paved the way for a market for those wanting a more casual Pokemon experience.

Conclusion: I think there's a lot of evidence here that makes the case of the upcoming Let's Go games to be based on Colosseum/XD. I always thought the games were highly underappreciated titles, so it would be great for newer players to get to experience them in a new way.

  • I hated the first Let's Go games so I'm hoping its anything other than this. Though realistically this probably is more likely than Sinnoh Remakes.
