I've dyed my hair four different times.
The first was the longest. It was the fashion at the time (the time being 2002, when I was 11) for guys to get blonde put through their hair in a salt-and-peppery sort of way. It started out as salt-and-pepper, then as I grew more and more comfortable with it I got the hairdresser to put in more and more bleach until the final time I did it in 2004 (yes, I did this for two whole years) when it came out like this:
I laugh my ass off looking at this now lol, but at the time it was perfectly normal. So there wasn't really a whole lot of reaction... at least not to my face :P. Shortly after the trend turned to bleaching a blob of hair at a random spot on your head. I had wisened up by then and decided against continuing with that :P
The next time was in 2009 when I decided to go as a goth to a Halloween party. Much to my mother's dismay (who, even though I was 19, was worried about me entering an 'emo' or 'goth' phase if I dyed my hair black for a costume). It looked something like this:
That was me at the party, nomming on my crucifix for a poser shot lmao. The reviews I got for this were pretty much all positive, my hairdresser (who didn't even do this, my mother did it out of a packet dye) being the most positive of all. She thought black suited me more than my actual hair colour, and I was tempted to just keep dying it black to spite my mother, who was the only person who saw it negatively.
In her defence, the dye was called "blue black" and as such when I went out into the sun it was black but it shone blue lmao. She even told me I had to get it stripped out of my hair, at which point I told her to get bent. According to my hairdresser, if I had let her have her way and had it stripped out, it would have just become blue rather than blue black, which would have been even more hilarious. It didn't fully grow out for two months. There was still a little bit of black at the tips of my hair in the Christmas photos for that year :P
The third and fourth times were last year. I went to Supanova (smaller Australian Comic-Con) and decided to be funny and go cosplaying as my friend Ben, who does to his hair voluntarily:
I found out after the fact that he does this to look like some anime character I've never heard of because I'm not a weeaboo, but that doesn't matter. Also, the photo makes it look toned down somehow, but it was essentially the left side bleached totally white. My friend dyes the other half of his head black, but that seemed like too much effort to go to for something like Supanova :P.
I got mixed reviews on this colouring. Some absolutely loved it, others absolutely hated it, but most of my customers took the attitude of "hey, you're young, this is the time you should be doing crazy **** to your hair" which was rather refreshing.
This was never going to be something I left in there until it grew out, because my experience with the black hair dye two years previously taught me that that would take two months and that was too long to be going around half-n-half. So I went to the hairdresser six days later and had her dye my hair back to brown. But since she couldn't find the exact colour the other half of my head was, she had to dye my whole head a darker brown than my original to compensate. I also decided I wanted a warmer brown because my natural hair colour looks dull as hell to me, so long story short my hair ended up looking like this:
Not the best picture I'll grant, but whatever. This was easily my favourite of the dye jobs because although it looked closer to black than brown when I stepped out from having it dyed, over the coming days it settled on a nice warm rich brown and it looked freaking amazing in the sunlight. Everybody else loved it, too. Everybody.
...except once again, my mother. She blew like a volcano when she first saw it because she thought it was too dark and was ONCE AGAIN scared that I was going goth on her lmao. By this point I've learned to disregard her opinion anyway though, since it's wrong in 99% of occasions.
And that's the history of my hair dying adventures! I never fear when I dye my hair, because I always have a backup plan for if a dye job goes terribly wrong:
