I'm bad at titles ugh. Uhm. I apologize if this seems like a dumb thread.

But uh I'm gonna ask you guys a question. Do you think it's weird that I'm 19 and I still enjoy kids things? I watch my little pony and Sophia the first and paw patrol (on occasion) and I still like playing with littlest pet shops and toys like that. The other day I asked about going to chuck e cheese and my mom and my sister thought it was weird. My sister and my mom constantly criticize me for not acting my age. What do you think? Is it weird?

Honestly I think that adults should definitely be able to enjoy stuff marketed towards children, but under no circumstance should an adult ever feel like they are entitled to it. You have to remember that it is absolutely for children and not intended for audiences outside the age range it is marketed to. Like yeah, you can say "I wish the producers recognized the fact that children are more socially intelligent than they think", but adults shouldn't be saying "they should put in more stuff that people my age will get, because we're the audience too." Like sure but... it's still not for you lol you're making the conscious decision to like kids' stuff that you KNOW is kids' stuff.

Personally I do think it's a little strange, though, when adults enjoy stuff that's marketed toward say... under-6yos. I just don't understand what you're getting out of it? Stuff for under-6yos tends to be very, very basic with little to no nuance or continuity especially these days- and yo, I worked in a daycare for a while, I know this. Those shows have more appeal to me for talking shit about with my coworkers while the kids avidly hang onto the characters' every word. But hey, we're all different.

As for going to a Chuck E Cheese... that's just a No. It is not appropriate for an adult to go into that kind of space, a space for children, and expect to be accepted and able to socialize on that level with that age group. Not at all. It'd be like going to a school playground during recess. It's not... okay. There are arcades and stuff aimed toward adults, go ahead and do those. Lots of people do. But not a children's park.

I don't know why I enjoy kids things. I just do. My mom said it would make me a good parent though because I'd actually be interested in what my kids are doing so yeah. I can't explain why I enjoy kids things. There's just something about them that draws me to them.

Also: about the chuck e cheese, I wouldn't be going there to socialize with the kids??? I'd be going to play the games and get tokens and tickets and prizes and have fun. I'm not /that/ weird.

    re: chuck-e-cheese

my understanding of the place, as shown through american television, is that it is a franchise aimed for little kids and entirely for little kids. there is a similar franchise here which operates under almost the exact same physical layout and attractions, it also being kids only.

to be blunt, your mother is right to be critical. i would have concerns too. aquacorde is also correct with the point of there being arcades targeted at all ages that are perfectly viable and not for people who are, i hate to say it, but desperately trying to cling on to their childhood. because, well, judging from your posts so far and factoring in aquacorde's point re: arcades, i think the appeal for you has little to do with the games and almost entirely the childish atmosphere you don't want to let go of.

Be yourself. If you're happy, who cares what anyone else thinks.

I still build LEGO sets and pretend fight with them on occasion, I love Disney and a bunch of other quirky things. If you can look at the time you're spending on these things and be content or satisfied, then be yourself. If you are confident in yourself and what you enjoy, you need not be embarrassed about any of it. People at work make fun of me for having a Disneyland backpack and Mickey Mouse shoes, but I take it in stride and pride that I enjoy Disneyland. They don't have any weapons to hurt you with if you wield them as armor.

Like I said, what you do on your own is whatever. But as an adult, being in a space exclusively meant for children, a space where people are VERY serious about keeping it safe for children, that is not okay. You may be like "oh I'm not a creeper, it's fine!" But. Who else knows that? Kids are generally kind of uncomfortable when someone invades their safe space. Parents are wary as hell. Just go to an all-ages arcade. Everyone will feel way better about it. And there will be people there your age that you maybe CAN socialize with without it being super weird.

In cases like that, it's just not about YOU. It's about the kids who the franchise is intended for. They are the priority.

tbh most kids stuff is made not only with kids in mind, but with the understanding that many parents watch TV and movies with their children instead of just plopping them in front of the screen as a babysitter. So a lot of media has a few nods toward adulthood in them while being thoroughly entertaining for children--and a lot of stuff also treats kids as if they're intelligent human beings (as they are!) and as a result is pretty easy to get into as an adult, too.

But I totally 100% agree with Aquacorde in that people should remember that kids media is for kids first and foremost and if they join fandoms for it, to keep that firmly in mind. It's okay to enjoy things with a more adult flair to it, but keep it out of the realm of children if you must. And always remember that just because you like a show for kids doesn't mean it stops being primarily for kids.

To be honest, yes there's a little bit of strangeness to some of what you say but I don't think any of it is a huge worry. If you can still function properly as an adult member of society, then it really shouldn't matter what interests you.

Should you be going to places designed specifically for children (keeping in mind this is different than places designed for "the family"). No probably not, it's not the most appropriate of things to do and it can make people uncomfortable. That's the only thing I see as a major concern providing you can function in an adult environment. Everything else, fuck it. What you enjoy in the privacy of your own home is your business and nobody else's.

Good points made in earlier posts about kid-exclusive environments, but this here is important. Enjoying things that kids enjoy isn't bad unless that's all you enjoy. Adults should be able to handle more complex entertainment and activities. Putting aside your adult responsibilities and worries for a time isn't bad and sometimes necessary, but you gotta be able to pick them up again.

Well, you lost me at the Chuck E Cheese thing, but otherwise, I'd say all of that is fine. I'm an adult, I have a job and I function in society. My biggest obsession is The Walking Dead, yet I'm a moderator on a Lion King forum, buy Disney movies for myself when I can, buy all kinds of Pokémon stuff, watch My Little Pony, hell I watch Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and plan to buy a video game of it that's coming out on Xbox One. It's perfectly okay to have childlike interests. But as others said, it might be best to find an all-ages/adult arcade and forget about child-specific ones like Chuck E. Cheese.

If you want to go to a place with games and token based things find a Jillian's or Dave & Busters.

yes I know I will still function as an adult in society, don't worry. as for the chuck e cheese thing, yeah. i'll see if i can find an adult arcade near where i live or something.
Dave and Busters comes to mind. I think it's got a lot of locations in North America and it's basically arcades but for a more adult crowd. iirc there's still even tickets and prize exchanges (but don't quote me on that, it's been like a decade since I went to one hahaha).
