i have had a thought recently, or more of a clarification of something that has bothered me the most about most modern mainline games.
The lack of side content
Things that help spice up replay value to give you more than battling, catching, and trading. And nowadays they have gone wayside. The past games tried with sidecontent starting with gen 2 and kept up with it all the way to its peak in Black and white 2. Making it all the more jarring when X and Y have nothing. Theres legends to catch, but every generation does that. You could, for an hour, look for hidden mega stones but that can quickly be completed. Theres just the campaign and nothing really else. A trend that unfortunately continues now.
Sun and moon, while having some new ideas in its main campaign, still lacks real side content. Ultra wasnt much better, adding the ultra worm hole minigame and nothing really else.
Sword and Shield is SLIGHTLY better due to its DLC giving it more staying power, but you quickly realize that after each expansions little story there is nothing added except the expeditions in the tundra.
Scarlet and Violet look to be continuing the trend, unless Gamefreak have an ace to shut me up.
And its sad, because its clear from the past that they COULD do interesting side content, but dont as most modern games sell well anyway due to a casual market who often dont care much(as far as i know). Almost scares me at the thought at Gen 5 remakes which could just end up completely butchered, the gen 4 remake didnt give me much hope. It just seems like a sad acceptance that most mainlines nowadays, unless your savy for competitive or dex completion, lack that replayability that used to be.
But boy do i have good news for you if you like BATTLE TOWERS/MASIONS/TREES
