Adding "Thank you"

Well I have seen this feature in other forums. Basically in every post you made it appears a small thank you bottom for people to push when they find what you posted useful. An their names appear bellow the post saying that they were thankful. Something like that XD That way the "Thank you" Spam is gone.

    Post Thank You Hack 7.7

    About this hack:
One of the biggest problems on forums as you may know is 'posts boosting'. There are users who LOVE to say 'thanks' when ever they can. How can it hurt? Their post count goes up, they have nothing to loose.

There are also users who really like to express their thanks to post but don't like posting a post that looks like they're post boosting.

Then comes the moderators who have to delete people's thanks yous so a thread can look readable with out the thanks yous thrown around.

Finally comes the posters of these useful posts. They have no idea how many people really likes their posts if only some people say 'thanks'.

What this hack does is fix ALL these problems - except those users who like post boosting. This places a button called 'thanks.' When a user clicks on it, it places his username in a box right under the post saying that so-and-so says 'thanks' for the post. Every-one who clicks is placed in one box.

By giving your users the extra feature, you forum will look allot nice and organized. It is a guaranteed liking by ALL the members of your forum.
The info can be found in the Vbulletin forums (I can't post urls =P)

In saying that, you could also just use the Post Comment feature to say thanks. The argument then could be that others do not know how reliable the advice truly was. But if someone else hasn't argued against the advice in the thread, it can be assumed that it is correct and followed.

So, all in all, whilst this may cut down SPAM, I doubt it will due to people not noticing this button, and people can use Post Comments if they really need to.

Well, we already have post comments. I think that's thanks enough. Or you could VM/PM that member and tell them that you appreciate their help.

In my opinion, there are a selective amount of topics/boards that require help. So implementing this would be a little pointless. The people that I help out, on those selective occasions, VM or PM me, like Sydian said, to express their graduated.

Nice idea, but I think it wouldn't suit the forums.

Also, about that "moderators having to delete the thank you posts," we don't do that, unless they're bypassing character limit by posting something like "thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" I mean, I personally find thank you posts to be annoying and I much prefer to VM someone to thank them, but that doesn't mean I'm going to delete someone's thank you post, unless it's breaking some kind of rule. Not how it works. I'm not that mean.

Yeah, I tend to find moderators only delete "Thankyou" posts in the main help threads, quick trade thread and graphics request thread.

Also, we used to have that whole reputation thing...and people abused it. Post comments is definitely enough, is it not? It's hard to abuse their system :P

We still have the comments function don't we? I think that should work just fine.

I like this idea. Post comments are something I barely ever use (since I don't even like having those), and I fall into that category of wanting to thank someone for something a lot of the time and not posting it because that's really all I have to say, so to me it seems rather pointless to waste a post for that. I mean, PMing and VMing someone thanking them is nice and all, but it's a lot easier to just click thanks and be on your way. I don't see the harm in it and it could prove to be extremely useful in the future.

I'm just a bit iffy on having the thank you feature since we have so many alternatives. That was my main point in my previous post. idk, I just don't think it's that hard to give someone your regards in a personal way, like via VM. But that's just me. It would be a quick and efficient way to thank someone with this method, but I just think it's unnecessary with all the alternatives.

My main issue is how badly it would clutter some pages with a lot of thanks. Writing a short post comment (even if it's just "thanks") doesn't take too long, it gets the point (letting the member know) and it doesn't clutter anything up.

I've just thought of something else. Surely if we have a "thank you" button, people will start clicking it as a formality, and then it'll defeat the point as everyone does it, so those who really want to say "Thanks" will revert back to post comments and messages anyway, leaving us with an unused feature.

That's hypothetical. If that does happen, worse case is we just remove the feature. No harm done.

I hate this idea. I think the post thanks systems are Stupid, Pointless, Annoying and Meaningless.

This is just another way to spin a Positive only Rep system...and the same issues that the rep system has will follow. Post comments are the way to thank people kthxbai.

In a sense, this would be like a baby version of the reputation system that was removed a while back.

I can just see people making threads of random information just for the thanks of it.
Also, I have seen this on different forums and I think it looks messy.

I've seen this used on some other forums.. and I personally found it a bit pointless. Not to mention that it makes some threads look awful. Some of the threads here have been / will be around for years. Overtime, there could be a list of 500 usernames under certain posts. D: It just.. looks so tacky.

On paper, the "Thank you" button sounds good. I mean, with the click of a button, you like what someone posted for you or someone else that it may have helped you in return or you found it to be useful, and you thank them for it. At the same time though, that's what Post Comments are available for. While highly ignored and forgotten (I find myself guilty here), it's still there to be utilized for those purposes and then some.

So, while I don't see anything wrong with the idea, I just don't see it as something necessary when we have Post Comments, plus I wouldn't want to see a list of user names under people's posts.

...that last part would get a bit annoying and ugly I'm sure. :\

I like it too.. and to be honest when I read this thread I thought "OH SNAP. POST-COMMENTS! I TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT THOSE!" haha and felt suddenly inclined to post some positive post-comments to people around here haha :3

I really like this idea a lot. Post comments are a good alternative, assuming people use the system productively... but let's be honest, they don't. The only people who seem to use it are wannabe trolls who can't even stand behind their insults. If you have something nice to say to someone, why not say it to their face? The only time you wouldn't want to stand behind what you have to say is A. when you don't fully back your beliefs, or B. you've got nothing meaningful to say (read: you're a troll) and you're too much of a coward to receive any sort of reply. The people who would put the function to good use either forget it even exists or would rather respond in a PM/VM, which, to me, is the normal thing to do.

On the other hand, a "thank you" system gives users a quick and easy way of telling the poster that they liked what they had to say. Unlike rep, it would count towards the post itself rather than the user and give them incentive to put more thought into what they have to say. Zero tolerance for trolling + higher quality posts = a healthier community. The post comment function, if anything, seems like nothing but dead weight at this point.
