5th Gen Aloe

That was very stereotypical and maybe even a bit racist. :|

Spoiler:

No offense, but this is just plain stupid. The reason that black people are sometimes censored in dubs of anime is solely because they are usually portrayed in a somewhat offensive manner (IE big lips, pitch black skin, etc.) As you can see, making them lighter doesn't really offend anyone at all. Aloe won't offend anyone except white prejudices, she's just a normal anime-styled character, with a darker skin tone. Usually all five of the black people in Japanese media look exactly the same.

They have darker skin, so what?

This might actually be more powerful than a lot of you may think. Showing people with different skin tones is a great thing. Pokemon is insanely popular with children worldwide, and this has potential to build tolerance amongst many of them, especially with the age group that doesn't even notice "races". It's wonderful that Game Freak is making an attempt not to exclude people of different skin tones, without making them seem like "token" characters. With Pokemon being as popular as it is, this could possibly make black people become more common in anime, manga, and video games. There's a new generation of media creators coming up in Japan, and many of them are growing up with Pokemon.

And no one forget Barlow.

As for her role in the game, for some reason I don't think she's a gym leader. I like the idea of her being Iris's mother. We do have that rumor that says Iris is based on an in-game character.

okay, I have nothing against black people, so don't act like I do, and I was making a point that aloe is a healing plant found on the continent of africa, and so are healers, I'm not saying all black people are from africa, if you actually knew anything about history or culture you would understand. I'm all for nintendo adding mixed races to Pokemon Games, it definetley adds a more friendly feel.

There is nothing offensive about her... if they dubbed her, then that would be racist :P

I'm sure you don't have anything against black people, but saying that the first black trainer in a real Pokemon game is a witch doctor from Africa when we hardly know anything about her is kind of strange. :|

Not that it really matters, but I've been studying African cultures recently, you were pretty quick to make that assumption. :/

Lmao, especially when she looks more like a teacher or instructor than a damn witch doctor...

Maybe that gives my "Aloe is a botanist" theory more credibility.

well i think she's a teacher too..coz the room does look like a classroom and her clothes looks kinda formal and her hand gestures...it looks like that shes teaching or something x]

There has been a PokeSchool in EVERY region so far (except maybe Johto... I don't remember it) so maybe this time instead of battling the students and answering easy mechanic questions we will get to battle the instructor, and Aloe is her.

She gives me and Ororo Munroe vibe. Maybe that's who they based her on. So definitely teacher. If she's a Flying or Psychic type Gym Leader, it'll definitely be Storm they based are on.

Champion would be awesome, I'd love another female champion. Cynthia <3

Though I'm more leaning towards the idea that she's probably one of the early gym leaders.

im gonna go with this, from her name youd think shes a grass trainer, but she kinda looks like shes dressed for Dark Types... maybe a dark gym finally ;)

Hope this is a better shot. I made it brighter. Same thing really...

That looks like a stage behind her. Perhaps she's got some relation to the Pokémon Musical? She looks like a person who'd be interested in the arts (look at her clothes, hair, etc.).

Brock had a darker tone in the anime, but If you look at his skin-color in FR/LG and HG/SS, you will find out he's never been dark to begin with. Well, the older games might've given the feeling he would be dark.

Anyway, I don't think she will be censored. There is no reason for it. She has none of the stereotypical signs of being dark skinned. No big lips, okay, she has an sort of afro, but I think she resembles more of an average '70's disco-dancer, who happened to be black.

Is called blackface, and your right.

Yeah every time I see black person with blackface IN A CURRENT ANIME
ex: https://housemanga.over-blog.com/article-26491186.html I don't mind THAT much but it's still kinda like a slap in the face. (my reaction every time I see a character drawn like this) Ah damn it... -_-U

Yes well, they toned him down in the American version ...

But yeah, Aloe isnt blackface, so she'll stay the same. As did Dahlia.

She looks like an Elite Four member. Or maybe even champion.

Off-topic: Did anyone notice that the male challenge sprite changed? o.o

She is afrocentric... when us African Americans embrace our culture, and wear our hair naturally instead of altering it to fit in with what society generally classifies as beautiful. That is why she is the complete opposite of offensive.

Ummm... Dahlia wasn't of African descent, she was Eastern Asian(Middle East). Just as brock is Southern Asian, also not of African descent.
I disagree, I'd say that she's Hispanic. Dahlia is the name of a Central American flower. She also uses Ludicolo.

But really people, race isn't important. I really like the idea of having an optional tutorial-esque battle with Aloe, since she looks like a teacher at a trainer's school.

Brock is dark-skinned/tan Japanese. He's not black or anything else, tyvm.

I hope Aloe isn't censored. That would seem racist. People would kick and shout and no one would look good.
