Anything you think the older games did better?

There are few :

1. Unova bridges, especially Skyarrow Bridge.
2. Distortion World
3. HMs. They were pretty good.
4. Pokémon Contest
5. Pokéstudio in B2/W2
6. Nostalgic bgm and hard battles, which is not the thing now. Remember how hard it was for first time when facing Lance with 3 Dragonite in Pokémon League ?
7. Waterfalls and streams changing our directions.
8. Team Rocket HQ back then was decently confusing.


I am only able to remember these !!

Option to choose Set style so you don't have to say No everytime the game asks if you want to switch
Option to toggle Exp. Share off in Gen 6 and 7

And honestly I think the modern games lost a lot of the older ones' sense of adventure when you had to explore a long route or dungeon and you had to stick with your current team for a while, being more mindful of their HP and PPs if you wanted to avoid multiple trips back to a Pokémon center. Now you can basically open your box and swap Pokémon anywhere, make picnics, and there are so many healing items everywhere that traversing routes and caves is so chill to the point it loses a lot of its old school RPG charm.
 
Steals Set mode and Experience Share toggle from Corveone. Besides that:
  • Better character with sprite animations.
  • Better trainers? Says this a little hesitantly. Rarely sees Pokemon with status moves anymore. Made some Pokemon dangerous, like Winona's Altaria. Notably removed its Dragon Dance in Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire for...Cotton Guard (alongside Roost). Eh. Not the same.
  • Being able to turn move animations off. Relates more to Scarlet/Violet, but still.
 
Yeah, they were better at getting to the actual game.

Rival dialogue, tutorials, story intros. They seem to take longer and longer with each entry. I'm more inclined to replay Gen 2 for the sake of avoiding an hour of tutorial text.
 
I really think the Exp. Share toggle is the easy pick here. It feels like they had a quality of life feature and removed it from newer games.
I'd also include what I'd vaguely call more ways to play the games. Things like Contests or the Pokeathlon were neat because they meant that Pokemon that you didn't catch for your team or for use in battle could still be worth having and they can still be great at something, giving you reason to engage with more of the game. It doesn't feel like we get bonus features included in that. I liked some of the more gimmicky ideas for battles as well, things like certain facilities in the Battle Frontiers or things like Rotation or Inverse battles.

This is also a very nitpicky subjective thing but I really like the soundfont of the Game Boy and Game Boy Advance and every time I listen to the soundtracks for the first three generations they feel very unique to me in a way that the newer songs don't, just because of being limited by their hardware.

100% agree, I love a lot of the QOL changes in modern Pokemon (HMs should've been removed 15 years before they were); but they really lack the "coming out of a dungeon with 4 Pokemon fainted and the last 2 barely hanging on" moments that make playthroughs memorable and force you to improvise/do more then spam your highest BP move. You pretty much have to play SwSh or SV blind and with both hands tied behind your back to even approach something resembling a challenge, which I feel causes a lot of the game's deeper and more interesting mechanics to be ignored because you can just spam A through everything.
 
That sense of challenge that was from the previous games does come to mind. I thought by gen 6 the games got too easy, and while I do think the EXP share may have something to do with it, I think it comes down to smaller scaled dungeons and easier trainers to encounter. While replaying through Black 1 the thing I missed the most were actual dungeons that you have to traverse through. Normally when you think of dungeons in an RPG they can be tedious, and the first dungeons people think of being terrible in pokemon are either rock tunnel or Mt. Coronet. However, I think gen 5 did it best because Game Freak added trainers that will fully heal you when you beat them. They're either placed at the beginning or towards the middle of said dungeons. This is something that was in gen 1 with Pokemon Tower. Not only that but it forces the trainer to prepare not just for battles but for longer journeys. You'd feel incentivized to invest in repels, potions, and status cures. You'd feel incentivized to spend some time leveling up your team and pokemon. I understand if long dungeons can slow down the game or progress, but I think a lot of the core dungeon designs in the older games felt find as they were. Not perfect as some dungeons took it too far like Mt. Coronet. The dungeons I think did it well are Silph Co., Mt. Silver, Pokemon Tower, Eterna Forest, Iron Island, Kanto/Johto Victory Road, Pinwheel Forest, Great Chasm, and the Golden Rod Tower.
 
When I first started to play Pokemon games in 3D (ie Gen 6) I worried that I'd never be able to go back, like playing a game like Platinum was going to feel visually unfulfilling by comparison. But I have since come to miss the days when Pokemon were depicted frozen in a single pose. Compared to how dynamic some of those sprite poses were, in a the 3D games a lot of Pokemon look lame when they're just... standing there.
 
Side stuff like Contests and PokeStar Studios, Secret bases, Matine Surf, etc. Any side thing that either doesn't involve battle spam or at least does it in fresher way.

Also stability. I've never even seen a crash in any of the Pokemon games I played prior to PLA & SV.
 
Well, mostly what many people said. I think they should allow turning exp share off and bring back set Battle style.

Other than that: graphics was more pleasing, less crashes, richer regions and places to Explore. The graphics had a big role too. You can't recreste some cool scenery in the needed games (spear pillar, desert un gen 5, the bridges, the peak of mount silver, ecc).
They were a bit more difficult when it got to catching Pokemon as well, imo. Then, the Little things: contests, secret bases, the underground, Battle frontier.
Also the music. We still have good music in newer games, but from gen 7 i found most music to be ok but not as iconic like in the older games. In SV imo the music Is too repetitive and that made it hard for me to Explore the game for long time. Area 0 music Is the big exception here.
Overall, it feels like there was more "care" put in some of the older games. Also, the National Pokédex was a thing. You can't tell me to play the new game to "collect all the Pokemon", if then i can't have all of them in it (i don't think they should all be available to be caught in game, but you should still have the possibility to pass them all from home imo).
Finally, i guess NPCs having better dialogues as well.
Finally, even the replying rate and longevity. If i wanted to 100% complete most of the older games, it would take much time. Instead, neweer games seem to be meant to be played once and then you Just go ahead.
I'll be honest, maybe Just because i'm a gen 4 fan, but from gen 6 to 9, PLA seems to be the one that for me came closer to the older Pokemon games, despite it's graphical problems. I haven't experienced bugs there, but i Indeed did in SV.
