AMA Ask me anything!

HI! I'm CoolKid575, it's been a good while since I made one of these and I figured I'd jump in on the trend! I live in Alabama and am currently in the process of applying to colleges, where I hope to pursue a career in Psychiatry. I enjoy Pokemon, tinkering with computers and writing, I'm also (very slowly and inconsistently) trying to learn to draw!

AMA!

What's your goal for your drawing practice? (like how good would you like to be by the time you're done I mean)

And have you had any luck with finding a job?

ooo psychiatry! nice. Do you have an area where you want to specialize in? (geriatric, autism, ADHD, etc)
I haven't fully decided, but I've been heavily considering specializing in depression. It's probably one of the worst mental illnesses you can have, and even though mental health awareness has improved over the past decade; a lot of people still seem to assume every depressed person is a walking emo stereotype/they're just lazy/generally severely underestimate how dangerous it is. I've also known multiple people who had it IRL and have seen how anti-depressants, albeit an imperfect solution, can really help a lot of people, and I want to be able to be in the position to help people recover from such a horrible disease.

what makes you like windows so much?

what inspired you to be a psychiatrist?
I'm mainly just really used to how Windows works at this point and can fix 95% of issues that crop up without much effort. Pretty much every program that's come out for the last 25+ years also runs fine on Windows, whereas things can get pretty iffy in a lot of areas on Mac/Linux (cough cough gaming). I'm not ride-or-die for the Windows brand or anything (I think Win 11 is a downgrade in most areas compared to 10 imo), but I definitely prefer it if I have the option.

As for why I was inspired to become a Psychiatrist, I've known I want to become some type of doctor for a while now, but I really don't like the idea of having to slice people open or seeing all these graphic scenes; and Psychiatry doesn't involve all that. I also feel like I'm pretty good at talking to others and that being able to prescribe medications would allow me to help people more effectively then through just talk-therapy. Finally, I'm just going to be honest and admit that the money is a big part of it. Being poor really sucks, and I don't want to be broke my whole life. A doctor's wage would allow me to comfortably live somewhere actually cool like NYC, do the things I want to do and maybe even afford a house before my 80s if I'm lucky.

I'd like to be at least average/above average, good enough to where I can pick a random item I want to draw and feel actually satisfied with what I'm putting out instead of thinking "well it's passable for my skill level I guess".

I have had some luck finding a job recently, it took a lot of applications, but I've landed myself an interview on August 29th. hoping it goes well so I can build my savings back up!

what do you want to be able to draw well / what do you like to draw at the moment?
I really want to be able to draw people well; I can do somewhat OK with simpler inanimate objects, but I really struggle with faces and especially perspective so my attempts tend to come out looking questionable at best. As for what I like to draw at the moment, I haven't been drawing much in general recently and I need to get back into it. I said I'd post in my art thread once a week... and the last post was almost 3 weeks ago. That was due to me being busy but I felt really discouraged about breaking my streak after just a few weeks and kinda fell off. I tend to enjoy drawing stuff from the Pokemon franchise though, especially items and the easier Pokemon. I've spent so much time playing the games that I can remember most of their designs essentially by heart and it feels really rewarding to be able to finish a piece and have it look decently close to the offical art.

As much as you're comfortably willing to share, do you have any thoughts about your home state and is there anywhere you would rather live in the future?
Favourite genre of video game, and are there any particular aspects about it that make it your favourite?
Is there an obscure piece of media you wished other people knew about?

I feel extremely negatively about Alabama in general and want to move out as soon as possible. The weather is horrible, the state government is worse and unfortunately a lot of people here still have very regressive attitudes towards immigrants/LGBT people/etc. Granted, some of that last point is likely from living in a rural area; but the state still has few redeeming qualities to make me want to stay. Even the wealthiest city, Huntsville, doesn't have anything you can't find a better version of on the coasts. I've only lived here since January 2022 though, so I don't consider AL my actual "home state". That would be Hawaii, due to my father's job, I moved around every few years, but I spent the most time in HI and definitely miss it. It's extremely beautiful (a good portion of the beaches do actually look like what you see on postcards) and the culture is a lot more laid back compared to the other places I've lived, people say it's over-touristed but IME I've never felt that way; except when it comes to pricing because let's just say I'm glad I wasn't paying the rent when I lived there because while it's a great place to live, everything is also REALLY expensive and you don't get paid much considering the COL. I loved getting to live there but I don't plan on going back. As for the second part of your question, my dream place to live would be New York City, it's so iconic and it seems like you can hardly turn a corner without running into 15 new opportunities and things to do; not to mention all the unique people I'd get to meet.

My favorite genre of video game is probably the RPG (specifically JRPGs), mainly for their stories. In most games, the story is usually an afterthought, but RPGs tend to have far more interesting plots to the point that I'm playing to see the next story beat instead of for the gameplay. I'm currently playing through the TTYD remake and Xenoblade 1 (currently at Chapter 7 and Eryth Sea respectively) and while the gameplay is fun, the plot and dialogue is leaps and bounds above what you'd see in, like, CoD and it really enhances the experience imo.

I've mentioned it before, but The Legendary Starfy is criminally overlooked. It's really easy and takes itself a bit overly serious at times; but it's also really cute with a banger OST and an insane amount of extra stuff in it (an entire post-game world, co-op support for bosses, a boss rush that also works with said co-op, a ton of cosmetics for the menu, multiple great minigames completely unrelated to the story, etc). Cursed bonus answer: the Cars 2 licensed game for DS because I couldn't get past like the second level and I want people to know my pain.

There is a desert island nearby. You can swim there, but you can only take one bag with you that can fit 4 things in. What 4 things do you put in the bag?
I would take a lawn chair, a pina colada, sunglasses and a surfboard. Since it's nearby and I can apparently swim there with multiple heavy items in a bag, I could just take some stuff for a great day at the beach and swim back when I'm done.

Serious answer: I would take a crank radio so I could listen to weather reports and pass the time, a book of matches to start fires/create smoke signals, duct tape to be able to build a shelter easier and a water filter to ensure the water I'm drinking is potable

Where did your fondness for the more technical aspects of computers come from?

Have you written anything (or just worked on a story in general) that you're especially proud of?

What made you want to join PC staff?

My first computer was this really, really crappy HP Stream 11 from Walmart, it was one of those ~$250 laptops you'd see with 32GB of storage and a Celeron that would be overwhelmed if you were doing anything more then 1 simple task at a time. Said crappiness forced me to learn a lot of technical tricks and general good-practice computer knowledge (eg: reinstalling Windows, saving every last byte of storage I could because I was always running out, finding the most efficient possible software for a given thing, etc) to get the most out of it. I have a better PC now, but I still love the feeling of "getting more then I should" out of something. It makes me feel clever to find ways to get tasks done quicker or more efficiently, or to be able to triple the FPS of a game through optimizing the settings properly; which is where I think my fondness for tinkering with them comes from.

When it comes to my older writing, not really, I looked at some of my stories and general stuff I wrote (email archives, etc)... and wow was it bad. There's this one story I wrote 4 years ago that I thought was brilliant at the time, but even reading the opening lines before exiting made me thankful I didn't know what Wattpad was then. I do feel very proud of the Daily article I'm currently writing though, I've put a ton of time and effort into it and feel very good about the work I've done so far.

As for why I wanted to join PC staff, I wanted to get more involved with the site; and I felt like I'd be able to more effectively voice my thoughts and improve the community as a staff member compared to a regular user. Another factor is that a good portion of the people I knew on here (including you) were already staff, so I knew I would be in good company from the start if I joined. Although to be honest, when I put in my application, I had extremely low expectations of it actually succeeding and didn't think I had a real shot; I figured I'd be disqualified based on my age and/or lack of experience, but I decided to give it a go anyway because I felt it was the best chance I was going to get with how many people had recently been promoted to Admin, and I figured I wasn't really losing anything apart from ~30 minutes of my time if it didn't work out; which turned out to be a good decision :)

What made you decide to switch up your look? (I know we spoke a bit about it, but I don't think many other people are aware)

I liked this question and wanted to return it to you.
What do you most want to improve on?
Thanks for returning the question! It's also a tough one for me, there are a variety of skills I want to improve like programming, writing and drawing. But the main thing I want to work on is becoming more confident in myself, I have a really hard initiating or adding to conversations offline since I spend so much time worrying about what the exact most perfect thing to say is, and I end up becoming a "3rd wheel" due to never actually saying anything. I also feel like I have an unhealthy reliance on external validation to feel good about myself, like, I might hope I did a good job on X thing, but I won't feel like I actually did until I get confirmation from a separate person. That also causes me to worry that I'm coming off as needy, which feeds into the first problem because it causes me to overthink conversations even more. I have gotten a lot better about it over the past few years, and I agree with your sentiment that having the mindset of "I can always improve" and not taking those around you for granted is extremely healthy. But I also also definitely want to become more confident on a personal level.

I mainly just wanted to try something new. I hadn't been very satisfied with "CoolKid575" for a while before I ended up switching over, and didn't feel like it fit the computer theme on my account. My flair was incredibly annoying to create so I definitely wasn't replacing that and Porygon hit the sweet spot of already being one of my favorite Pokemon as well as fitting perfectly with the theme. I kept the "Kid575" suffix as an homage to the original username but so far I've been much happier with this new design compared to the old one.
