"Bro Gamers"

The bro gamer is a name given to a type of video gamer that exclusively plays mass-marketed games that usually get yearly releases with little changes, grimey linear FPS games featuring a macho, overpowered soldier guy as the protagonist, and/or free roam games based around a criminal protagonist that involves a crap ton of shock value, edginess and gangsta rap. The choice in games usually reflect the personalities of the player, often being between ages 15-25, is overly-masculine and loves sports/working out, bragging about smoking weed and listening to generic frat boy metal/rap music. Think of him as the "bro" who wears flat billed hats, popped collars and tapout shirts. They tend to reject other games outside of the aforementioned, more specifically Nintendo and indie games for being "kiddy" "nerdy" and having "crappy graphics". Although I have known bro gamers that still play Pokemon on emulators, though hate everything after the first few gens, so it's not necessarily always the case. They may like some older nintendo games (Pre-GCN) but only because they've grown up on them.

BTW, I'm not calling all people that play COD/Halo/Madden/GTA "bro gamers". It's just a common type of people that happen to play those games.

    Thoughts on the bro-gamer?

I don't have many thoughts to add to this discussion right now..

But I think it's hilarious that "bro-gamer" had a shopping link added by skimwords. And they're freakin' hipster glasses. :v

All I know about "bro-gamers" is in this comic:

    Spoiler:

Also, there's no such thing as "generic frat boy metal" because generic frat boys do not listen to metal.

I've come to think of the "Bro Gamer" as some mythical boogeyman that other gamers have come to blame the "downfall of video gaming" on, when, really, the bulk of people playing these games nearly exclusively are in their late 20s or in their 30s after they've put the kids to bed, people who don't have time for other games. I know people who might fit the stereotype, but those people have other hobbies aside from gaming. And of the people I know who are most intensely into these types of games, they tend to be into other types of games as well.

Personally, I think they should be left alone rather than be blamed for "all that is wrong with gaming".

Though FPS is probably my top genre of game, I stick to ARMA and half-life (And I did grow up on Halo, so that too!), so I don't count myself in that. Plus I hate CoD and Rap/Trap to boot!

So don't throw all us FPS guys in with the CoD crowd!

Bro-gamer. You learn something new every day, it seems.

    Umm

FYI, I was talking about generic metal that frat boys listen to, not metal that "generic frat boys" listen to. i.e. Limp Bizkit, Five Finger Death Punch, Korn, Rob Zombie.

I'm not talking about all FPS's. In fact, Half Life 2 and TF2 are both my favorite PC games. I'm talking about bland FPS games that get yearly releases and minimal changes.

I do enjoy the Halo series however, but from my experience it's huge with the bro-gamer crowd.

Except, that stuff isn't actually metal. It's poser bullshit that idiot MTV hosts think is metal.

My oldest brother and cousins fit this description perfectly, haha. My cousin even said that LoL's popularity will diminish quickly once the new Madden game comes out because Madden takes a lot more strategy and skill, so everyone will be hopping over to that. All they ever play are sports games and CoD. My oldest brother tried Skyrim, but couldn't manage his attention span long enough to learn that killing a chicken is against the law, and after trying to kill everyone in a town, said that the game was crappy and boring because he died.

I try to have legitimate conversations with my cousin about video games, but all he ever tries to do is convince me that CoD, Madden, and NBA are the best games ever created, and that all the other games pale in comparison.

I'm not against anyone liking these games, but come on, haha.

Generally I try to just live and let Iive about that kinda stuff. You know, it takes all sorts to make the world. If anything, somebody who decides to avoid any non-generic video game is just screwing themselves over.

I'll tell you what I do despise, though. All those bratty little kids who think they're so awesome for playing a game that's inappropriate for them. I've recently started playing an old PSP game I have, again, and the whole damn community is pathetic. Anyone here interested in a walkthrough for Lord of Arcana? I'm sure as hell not posting it on Gamefaqs...

As a personal opinion? I don't really care. It's not my thing, but I don't have a problem with the 'stereotype', itself.

I'm inclined to disagree with the first part I've bolded. Whether or not you have the "time" for your hobbies, you don't completely change gears on the genre you're interested in.

When I was a kid, I still remember coming home from school and seeing my parents sitting on the living room floor playing SMB and Lolo, or dad and his assortment of D&D titles on the NES and PC. They had just gotten home from work, but fuck that, dinner's on the stove, kids, we're busy. :P They're in their mid-late 50's now and they're not giving up; dad still adores his horror games, mom still loves her puzzle games.

That said, I'd lean more toward the second bolded section, if I were actually "labeling" people by this stereotype... That's exactly it. They have other hobbies. If they were really that into gaming, I'm sure they would have found other genres they like by now. But they're not. Which is why they just pick up this one title year after year.

    My $0.02, anyway. :v

^ This sounds exactly like my nephew and their friends. My nephew actually tried Fallout: NV, but his attention span barely got him through creating a character.. and then he tried to go straight off to Nipton, and much like in your case, said the game was crappy because he died and wasn't capable willing to try again.

Limp Bizkit is utter shit. Had it in my library out of curiosity, deleted it.

Some of those bands listed have one or two songs that you can listen to if you somehow lost your entire music library save for those, but that'd be a cold day in hell.

Not-so-funny-but-kinda-funny story, during my senior year I was able to get about half of the senior class (mostly the guys, a handful of girls) to start playing pokemon on their phones. It was neat to me especially since they usually try to put down people who play pokemon and usually only play CoD.

I never actually said nor intended to imply that it was changing gears so much as it was just gradually shifting focus within the genres you're already interested in due to a lack of time for genres with more involved stories or gameplay.

Does anyone feel that Destiny would be considered a "Bro" game? Of course, it's a heavily advertised FPS made by Bungie, which also made the Halo games that bro gamers love. It could be just the local servers I've been playing on, since my town is ghetto as shit, but I noticed a ton of people with "xXs" bordering their names, 420's, references to drugs (particularly weed) and naming their fireteams after rap groups.

And don't get me started by the people I've played with on strikes. There was literally a screaming 8 year old the one and only time I've played. Another thing is that games that bro gamers play have a ton of elementary school-level kids on the microphones. So damn annoying.

The shitty community won't stop me from enjoying Halo or Destiny though. I could just mute everyone instead.

...What. lol I don't really care, honestly. You like what you like and if that happens to be all major FPS releases, so what? :/ I dislike people poking fun at me for what I play just as much as I'm sure a "bro gamer" would dislike if someone was poking fun at them.

Why I don't mind people playing what they like I hate the bro gamers who ridicule anyone who doesn't play the bro gamer type games.

I like to call these people the chav gamer and you will probably hear them say something like the below phrases:

"EEEEyyyrrr arrrr laaad, if itzzz not GTA, call ov duty orrr FIFA itz gaaay that laaad liiike"

"Ayyyy laaaad, Ninnnntendozz themmzz s**t, theeeeyz forrr liicckle Kiidddzz, theem Lad"

Increasingly, I'm meeting people offline who are like "oh, you like video games? Let's talk about Call of Duty, Fifa, Grand Theft Auto"

    @__@

Different tastes are fine. But following that I then feel like I'm being judged. Even in something somewhat nerdy like gaming, there are jocks :|
