6th Gen But giving the name "PEKACHU" to a PIKACHU? It seems pointless.

props to you if you know where the title came from

So nicknaming Pokemon was a nifty feature since Red and Green which lets you nickname your Pokemon! Some do it for fun, some do it just because they feel like it, some do it in some challenges, and so on and so forth.

In some cases, nicknaming becomes a hassle when trying to trade them in the GTS because of censorship of vulgar words.

In Gen 5 and 6, this was further a hassle because if the game detects any profanity in the name, you cant name that Pokemon.

What do you think would happen to this troublesome feature in ORAS? Will the censorships be a little lax this time or become a more pain in the butt? Do you have some nicknames that were actually friendly but were deemed inappropriate because there are some parts of the name that are inappropriate?

    Discuss!

I don't believe much changes will be made to it, if at all. Nicknaming is just one of those things that they don't really care about, and just threw it in there to add some realism; as long as you don't abuse it, you shouldn't be having much trouble. If they do wish to switch things up a little, maybe they could remove the name-change restriction for traded Pokémon; people complain about that every now and then, whenever they wound up with Pokémon with some name that they didn't like. I personally haven't faced any issues like this, but others did and still do. :(

    I think its incomplete.
    While naming my hipopotas
    poop is censored
    poo is not

I had a Krookodile named "Lass Russo". It was censored and now there is no way to rename it after the transfer.

    Annoying.

Personally, I doubt much will be done to change the censorship rule. It's mostly due to the young fan base Pokemon has, anyway, and that's not going away any time soon. Not really an important feature in the eyes of Game Freak, or at least not one worth tinkering with. It'll most likely stay as it was in previous games.

Not a huge point of interest from GameFreak, I don't think. I believe the minor censor was added in the more recent games because of the "abuse" over the GTS, and it was just to prevent it. Nothing huge came out of it from XY or BW2 so it probably won't really matter much now. I doubt it'll be removed but I also doubt there'll be any dubious restrictions added.

I agree with you, the Pokemon franchise mostly being targeted to a young fanbase is probably the most likely reason the censorship exists as of the most recent generations. I don't really see them removing it anytime soon in my opinion since you know how they tend to feel for the kids, trying to avoid exposure to vulgar content.

Lol, I didn't even know there were censorship rules in place. x3

Probably because I mostly name my Pokemon after book characters.

But now that I'm aware of those rules in place, I doubt they'll change much, if at all, from what X/Y had in place.

I feel that the censorship thing isn't really anything that homes into ORAS. It's just a feature GF introduced to save the brand of younger generations, especially with Wonder Trade and all, there's no telling when you'll receive a little guy with the nick reading as f*** or s***. It's just become a part of the whole series, a trend, so it's like changing the amount of total Pokémon you can carry or how many max moves you can learn. Trends have been broken before, yes, like the reusable TMs, but very rarely, so it's not really a big possibility.

    Rustboro old couple, right?

Haha, censored? I understand it in Wonder Trade but part of the fun was to name your pokémon the strangest/most obscene things :p Not always, of course, but the fact that you could was hilarious. Sort of like naming your rival poopface or worse things.

Not sure what I'm hoping for. Probably I'd like them to not censor stuff; pokémon is played in so many countries and languages and even for myself some words in English mean nasty things in Swedish while other, harmless words in my language means bad things in English so they get censored even though I didn't mean anything by it. Even on PC, haha.

I sort of think they will keep it for ORAS though. Because why would they remove it?

Ugh, one of the worst things GF could've implemented. Even with that censorship, I still got a Lickitung named "LickMyBallz" through the Wonder Trade. Three guesses on what I did to it.

And the amazing fact that I can't name things with "spik" (like Spike) or "viol" (but Viola went through?) because they're bad words I don't know from a language.

Honestly, they should tweak around with how they censor nicknames.

If there's one change I'd like to see, it'd be to simply remove the nickname of a traded Pokemon.

I'm fine with not being able to nickname them whatever you want, but if there's a nickname you really hate, you should be able to ask the game just refer to that Pokemon by its species, completely removing the nickname.
    ^^^Thisssssss

I have found it a hassle to not be able to renickname my traded pokes. Nicknames that are terrible are a real deal breaker for trading in some cases.

I agree, but then be able to nickname after the trade to whatever you want. I hate it when I get a nicknamed pokemon with a nickname I don't like, and I can't nickname it.

I kind of like that you can't change a traded Pokemon's nickname -- I nickname everything and I like the idea that unless they were released they're still floating around someone's game like that -- but I DO think if someone doesn't nickname one, you should be able to change it. There's nothing special about them being called their species name. It'd be like adopting a dog named Dog and not being able to change its name.

Hopefully we won't see the issue of not being able to trade Pokemon with their original name again. I mean, not being able to to trade Cofagrigus because it contains the word ♥♥♥, or not being able to trade both Nosepass and Probopass because they contain the word ass? I understand why they're doing it, but they really need to get around some of the issues. Really, I think they just need to put in a warning that, when trading online, they might get Pokemon with inappropriate names, and if they're not ok with that, that's just a risk they have to take. Their attempts to shelter children from names containing something as mundane as the word "ass" is really hurting the system more than it's helping.

I really like this idea. This could also be a resolve to the inappropriate nickname thing, where, if you find it to be profane or just simply dislike it, feel free to just completely remove the nickname. I think it should be more of a 'hide the nickname' rather than removing it though, in case you're to trade it to someone else later. But yeah, great idea!

I wanted to name my Dedenne "Penelope" after the cute hamster in Hamtaro, but it got censored ;; I also love how Viola is censored when there's a Gym Leader with that very name XD

Anyway, I like the idea of being able to remove/hide the nickname of a traded Pokemon. Like others have said, it resolves inappropriate nicknames. I personally find it odd to receive a nicknamed Pokemon, as often the Pokemon's only purpose will be to be bred or traded via Wonder Trade or something, and I never nickname Pokemon I plan to use for those sole reasons (unless it's a Pokemon I like or one of my main team members), so.

I doubt that they will do anything to change the censorship system. There are so many other things that they could focus on - and apparently they've already censored a lot in XY.

I'm also on the boat of people that think it's stupid to have forced censorship implemented in your personal game.
If I want to name my Pokemon something obscene, I should be allowed to. Remove that crap entirely.

Keep your censorship in the trade system. :I

I didn't even know censorship was an issue because I never nicknamed my pokemon anything wildly obscene or weird.

Nicknames ruin things for me anyway. Whether you're trying to trade me a pokemon with a nickname with a swear word or innuendo, or a name I just flat out don't like, I'm not going to take your pokemon, and you're not going to get the one you wanted from me, simple. So I agree, the censorship thing is kind of flawed I guess, like I said I never had an issue with it, but it should just be up to the person whether they care or not. And to be honest, I don't know any kids who can't handle a word or two even being old enough to know how to use an internet trading system.

But "Viola" and "Penelope"? I don't see how that's remotely inappropriate, they're actual names, and they don't even have hidden words in them, unless I'm missing something completely.

Penelope? Elope? Maybe they want to discourage kids from running away from home and getting married :pink_giggle:
