Cozy games

Whilst by no means a new genre, so-called "cozy games" - games which provide you with a more relaxed experience, generally life sims although plenty of lighter narrative-driven experiences could also be described this way - have really gained in popularity since the pandemic especially, although franchises such as Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons and Animal Crossing have been around for far longer, and of course Stardew Valley paved the way for a new kind of simulation game.

So, what are some your favourite cozy games? Is this a genre you particularly enjoy? Any in particular you'd recommend to someone new to the genre?

Animal Crossing, Calico and Nature Matters are my picks with the mobile game Cats and Soup getting an honourable mention.
Ah that didn't load the rest of my message, oops. This isn't a genre that stands above others for me, but it is enjoyable in it's own right. I suppose I would recommend the ones I listed, as they are quite cozy. Cats and Soup is an idle style game as well, so even if you are not in the game playing, it gathers coin and materials for you which can be nice if you are pressed for time to play.

I loved My Time at Portia so much that I decided to donate to the sequel's Kickstarter. I was always a little bit worried about this type of game, but it was great. I would like to get into Animal Crossing, but it's currently somewhat low on my Switch to-buy list. But I think I could get it in December. Holidays season sounds about right for this type of game.

Yknow, i don't know if it truly counts as "cozy" per se, but maybe Toejam and Earl for the Sega Genesis would fit the bill. It's a dungeon crawler esque game but it has a surprisingly very relaxing pace as you cruise around trying to find the missing pieces of your ship. It's pure 80's/90's funk aesthetic and totally jammin'! Make sure you use save states, though, because the game is a nightmare on higher floors due to massive numbers of enemies swarming you.

I've heard some great things about My Time at Portia and do want to try it. Also super interested in PuffPals Island Skies (first and only thing I've ever donated to a Kickstarter for!), Coral Island, and Fae Town among others. Out of the ones I've played, I adored Harvest Moon: A New Beginning sooo much. Played it to death (Neil <3). I also purchased Story of Seasons when that came out for 3DS but never played much of it - definitely going to get into it sometime soon to scratch that itch.

Rune Factory 4 and 5 are also farming and generally cozy games, though not as much as some others since they do have combat and a story where fighting through dungeons is required. RF4 is one of my alltime favorite games.. I got really attached to the world and characters.

Heard amazing things about Fantasy Life on 3DS but never could finish it. I got stuck early on with killing enemies for quests that took too long to die and hit me too hard, so I put it down. Another game I want to try again since it does scratch that cozy and cute itch I often crave.

Currently am playing the Switch version of Friends of Mineral Town and enjoying that! Thinking of getting Pioneers of Olive Town after but not sure yet. Heard mixed things.

Animal Crossing is definitely my favorite. I also have lots of love for Little Dragons Café too.

AC is always a blast ❤️

Has anyone heard of Ooblets? Been hearing a lot of good things about this one and it seems like a cozy game, so I'm considering it.

I've never heard of Ooblets until now. It does look really cute and adorable from what I see though!

Dinkum - I've been playing it, it's not as obscure and still in development, it feels like Animal Crossing in Austrailia with Weapons and proper pilotable vehicle's like a helicopter, a jetski, motor bike, etc. and you can craft almost all the stuff you need like lights, beds and so on.

If i'm wanting to kick back and get into something more demanding but still light; I play Avernum Crystal Souls and start leveling up my party to beat the Grand Magnus into the ground that keeps people in the story imprisoned underground.... and THAT is Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrd; he's just straight-up evil doping things to prolong his own life indefinitely while screwing with the lives of everyone else.
