The prizes are also pretty insane. Game consoles, booster boxes, scholarships, merchandise, etc.
Plus live streaming across the entire country. Regionals has thousands of people show up, Nationals has a few hundred iirc, and then Worlds is just NUTS. I'd love to go to an event.

I'm actually gonna start making myself some teams after this weekend. .u.
VGC format itself is super fun.

I'm more of a social player and haven't dabbled in competitive. What would you suggest as the best place to get started learning the 'competitive version' of the game?

PC's Battle server!
Pokemon Showdown is an online battle simulator. Smogon is a great place to check out Pokemon strategies, and their web magazine 'The Smog' is great for team and meta game analyses.

Also check out PC's own Battling and Team Building section. Tons of really nice people who'd love to help you get started. :3

I may not know much but I'm always happy to help with the basics. <3

I don't have enough time to pick up competitive battling, as much as I want to. It's annoying, because I really enjoyed it, and it's something that could reignite the spark I used to get playing Pokémon that I just don't have any more.

It's so much fun to play competitively. ^u^
It gives me new respect for certain Pokemon. Plus my teams are cute af. <3

As it is, I have too many things on my plate to even finish them all :/

The problem with competitive is that I always lose every single battle because I always get outpredicted, and obtaining Pokemon of the best standards is a huge chore in its own.

and I hope that I can stay loyal to #TeamUnova in the GT... or else I'll have to change this Oshawott theme with a Pokemon from the region I get chosen for.

People where setting them off at like 11 PM on the third, and barely any yesterday...though it was raining off and on. So my friends and I stayed in and ate pasta and played fighting games

I am also British but in the summer, there are firework nights down at the beach where I'm from. They're really nice nights. That and for Folk Week. Ooooh baby I can't WAIT to go back for Folk Week!

Nope. It was me, sitting at home melting because it's too hot for me here atm. besides, what is July 4th? Is that a thing? XD

If you're in America than Independence Day. Mine wasn't much better. Went to the fireworks, got eaten alive by mosquitoes, and then watched my car's battery die because I blasted the a/c too long :/

Lmao I know what it is ;) I was poking fun at how the 4th isn't really much of anything outside of America XD

At least you have a/c though... I have a fan, but it's blasting me with warm air. I can't cool down and sleeping is a nightmare.

Mine was splendid, went to see Inside Out (good movie btw!), went to walk around one of Houston's largest parks, and got to see a fireworks show afterwards in the evening. It was a good day. B)

Haha, how dare you talk down on our day of hot dogs and fireworks :P. We're really quite proud to blow stuff up in the name of Freedom

Inside Out is soooooooo good, it's ridiculous.

I've been in the same boat for the past few weeks. Sleeping is a nightmare when you only have a fan.
I only have A/C in my car. My apartment gets soo hot that I have to sleep with a box fan propped above me.

My fan is a standing fan that I bought for 19€ and yeah it works... If the air were to be cool. But it's not and it's kinda useless. It's better than nothing though I suppose.

I certainly don't live in the best conditions, in my own bedroom I'm so susceptible to sudden temperature changes even with the window closed, which is my usual approach to the colder months.
