I do the same thing! I've spent sooo long trying to come up with what to get my boyfriend and mom that I get downright annoyed when they start asking me what I want. I don't care what do YOU want mom god!
I'm not big on buying gifts for fellow adults outside of immediate family. I would totally want to spend time with you, have a nice meal, throw a party, whatever. Aside from contributing food or drink, or bringing a hostess gift, or something like that, I don't think much more should be part of the deal.

And even then, my parents really dislike if I get them anything. They say they feel more than capable of buying something for themselves -__-

Extended family and such, I'd get gifts for the little kiddies because that's kind of the point of the commercial part of Christmas. Otherwise, I don't understand why we do it. Nobody knows what you like better than you do.

It's not about getting you the thing you want the most. It's like when my boyfriend went to check out the new Whole Foods and came back with organic eggnog. Would I have bought it for myself if I was there? Probably not. But it warmed my heart that he was shopping, saw something that made him think of me, and brought it home specifically so I could enjoy it.

I make a big point of trying to find something that people didn't even know they want, so they can be delighted with something cool that matches their tastes, what they like in gifts, and isn't just a boring "hey here's a list of everything I want, buy me something!" Gifts for kids is imo the worst part of Christmas because they don't appreciate that - that's surface-level gift giving.

I like this, but... as an every day type thing. Routinely making someone special feel special.

At Christmas, it's more like a test. And I always get crappy stuff that I return because people feel obligated to get me something.

I like it that people actually get you the things you wanted for christmas.

It shows they actually care enough about you to actually listen to you.

As plain as this post is, it's really true. People pretending to care won't have the slightest clue what you'd like for a holiday.

My aunt sent me some cookies yesterday, and they taste like grease and cane sugar... and nothing else. I can't eat them. :x

I actually ended up taking a new SSD, collector's edition CD for Age of Empires, a new flash drive for my keychain, and a book called the Teenager's Guide to the Real World by Marshall Brain from my mother while she wasn't looking. I think that last thing will bring in whatever understanding I don't have, but honestly the overview on the website bulleted a lot of things I had recently come to discover. I'm going to devour that book. As far as the money for the things go, all things considered with shipping and all it was less than $150, but regardless she's angry about it because on Friday we went shopping for stupid **** we didn't need and her credit card declined. As it turns out she was borrowing more money anyway so it didn't matter. I really don't care as long as our bills aren't going unpaid, and I know when all of those hit. :/

Yeah it only applies if people take gift-giving seriously, like I do. Part of the reason I'm twisting myself in knots over what to get my boyfriend is because I've already given him gifts related to all of his hobbies and just giving him another repeat gift that's similar to an old one isn't delightful like I want, so I need to find something new.

I hate gifts that don't count. It's important to me that I give gifts that will be both meaningful and purposeful, and aren't something the receiver would ever consider throwing away. As I like receiving gifts like that, I'm going to do that as an example for others when they buy from me. Unfortunately I'm not in a position to either give or receive gifts that aren't more than gestures (if I can give or get gifts at all)... what I'd like to do is, each Christmas of mine have some money set aside to bump all of PC's regulars with gold/crystal supportership. I think that would be nice.

I just found the perfect song about hipsters.

How many hipsters does it take to change a lightbulb?

Answer: It's an obscure number. You've probably never heard of it.

I love gift shopping at Christmas time. It's the best feeling going to a store and spending a ton of money on something societally sanctioned. I just love spending money in general so this gives me a reason to do it.

My gifts aren't thoughtful though, I end up getting gift cards for half the people because I'm really bad at predicting what they'd like, and my philosophy for problem solving is "throw some money on it"

Okay is it me, or are they ironically mocking the hipster fad by making an albino blacksheep flash song on youtube, in 2014? Cause I dunno if it makes it worse, or effing amazing.

Anyway, I have no money to buy gifts for others, just for me. Some of the early christmas presents so far:
Spoiler:

And for Christmas itself:

Are you guys celebrating St. Nicholas/Nicholais/Nikola day in your country?

I think I ate about 10 pounds of chocolate this weekend and it was most of what I had been eating these days lol.

Make him something. You play music, no? Compose something for him? Make him homemade spice rub or hot chocolate mixes? A drawing? Something crafty? A paperweight? A picture-frame.. etc!

He's not that kind of guy unfortunately. A picture frame or drawing is like "....that's nice, what can I do with it?" He's the kind of person that likes fun things as gifts, impractical things he can play with. He would honestly be fine if I just got him a Gundam model because he's not into gifts like I am but NO I MUST GET HIM SOMETHING DELIGHTFUL.

Well depending on how far into your relationship you two are you could always give him a gift that is also a gift for you. Utilize those roleplaying skills for fun times in and out of d&d.

Guys I can almost guarantee that the advice is going to be useless. My goal in gift-giving is to find a gift that is unique to how my boyfriend is and what he likes and what kind of gifts he's into. None of you know that so it's shots in the dark. I appreciate the attempt but this is what I meant when I'm serious about gift-giving - you can't just know "that's Oryx's boyfriend" and get a gift on par with the kinds of gifts I get.

e: for example his birthday was in March and I was aware that he had been showing interest in starting an anime figure collection, but that he couldn't justify the expense, and that he was looking into buying a glass case to display his gunpla so I got him a nice figure of his favorite character from a show we both like. Took lots of putting together various things that were on his mind to surprise him with something he didn't expect at all that made him really happy.

Get him some sort of board game like cards against humanity? Or something retro like a yoyo because why not. I guess in that case you gotta think outside the box.
BTW if he's into gundam there are some gundam related ideas on HobbyLinkJapan. Might be worth you taking a look?

I'm the opposite. I like really useful gifts or things that I eon't have that I can't justify buying at the moment so I always put them off.. A bottle opener? Some socks? A laptop tray? That stuff is more me.. so I guess I wouldn't be able to see on the same page as him haha :3
And I like pamper packages. A meal out (or a meal in prepared with fresh/organic ingredients.) A massage. An excursion. :3 That sorta stuff!

other than the SS thing I regrettably signed up for, I don't have anyone to gift...

I really wish I did. I'm just a mess. A mess.

Oh man, a laptop tray! I've been putting off one of those forever

If someone could think of something like that for me, a useful but I haven't thought of it type thing, I'd totally appreciate that. From relatives though, I tend to get "I know you kinda like this, right?" - like a portable DVD player way passed when those were useful, or a controller for video game system I don't have, or just obvious tech things I already have.

The stuff I appreciate the most are from my mom. Little puzzles and trinkets that I don't ask for. Nice anthology books of cartoons and comics I enjoy.

For me, I like the gifts that will be meaningful or special for me, like a new phone, in one of my birthdays back then.

And speaking of Lego, I do recall there was a Lego contest in Japan, I believe? I can't believe Lego can make things that also works in real life too, like water dispensers, and the tools to make coffee, etc.
