Ooh, conservatism and chauvinism what. Care to elaborate? I don't know much about Japan's domestic affairs.

I was probably opening a whole new can of worms after using those words, so feel free to delete my earlier post. (If I haven't deleted it already)

My original point was, basically what's happening is, Japan has done little to nothing to clean up the messes they left in the wake of Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster after the Earthquake. This has resulted in anomalies such as deformation of crops (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...ages-sweep-region-years-nuclear-disaster.html) and finding of cesium in children's urine (https://www.fukuleaks.org/web/?p=11564)

Anyways back to my original point AGAIN (that I deleted), I wouldn't visit Japan again for a very long time. I might visit Korea once every several years, but despite its technological advancements, I don't think Korea is a good place to live long-term.

Hmm, could you VM me about conservatism and chauvinism if it's something too sensitive for the DCC? It's something I think I'd be interested in, and there's probably nothing that's too controversial or sensitive for me.

I've heard from a friend of mine that Japanese youth don't really care about politics - like in pretty much every other Western country. This happened while we were in China, and we were discussing about Chinese-Japanese relations, especially over the war. He studied in Keio, and he told me that his colleagues didn't really have much to say about that (the war), whereas across the sea in China, it's a much bigger deal.

tl;dr I guess it goes to show how in Western countries a lot of youth, especially, are apathetic about politics.

First of all, I have to apologize to rest of the DCC for inadvertently turning this into a boring half-debate thread.

I'd rather you forget about what I said. Please. It was a freudian slip.

I don't know about Japan, but at least in Korea the education system in grade school is very poor. All the Korean news I read about grade schools are all negative.

That's interesting, I thought the Korean education system performed a lot better than ... what we have here :( Is it overhyped? All I get in Western media is this strange aura of jealousy in the articles I read about Korea's system, cuz while you have to admit that the students can perform, they end up criticizing all the pressure and how inhuman it is blah blah blah

There's a reason why my mother and I moved to United States, you know.

For all the studying that my Korean peers had to do, there's just too little outcome coming from too much competition. I'm glad I didn't go through the same mental suffering and pain they had to go through.

What do you mean by competition? Is everyone competing for the highest grades? Is it a curve where only a select amount of students will get A's?

I'm curious about others' educational systems.

Haha yeah. When I was in China in the "best" universities, the students really weren't all that impressive. I guess they might have good professors and resources, but at the end of the day we're all the same people. And we have a lot of Korean overseas students in my university too, but as a whole there's nothing too special about them.

Competition in high school is extremely high, as there are pressure from parents who spend **** ton of money for their kids to go to tutoring from right after school ends upto hours after midnight. Coupled on that, there are pressure on especially elite students to push for the top 1 in the school to go to a good university. If you're in 2nd place, you're a failure, basically. This applies mainly to kids living in the city.

Ouch, that sounds rough. I might not get the best grades, but I did fairly well. One thing I realized once I started college is that all the grades I received in high school meant squat now.

One thing I know that's happening here is that the leaders want kids to be more geared to science and math, so they're slowly bumping up the requirements in those areas. Basically, they want kids to love math and science by forcing them to hate it. I don't know about you, but if it's one thing I hate, it's being forced to do something.

I guess I shouldn't complain. The competition sounds awful over there. I don't think I would last very long is an environment like that.

Yeah, I've heard a bit about that too. I also doubt the ability for people to retain information and understanding under a chronic high-stress situation. Clearly these parents and educators have never heard of melatonin nor cortisol.

I honestly wouldn't stay in Japan for an extended period of time, especially being the gaijin that I am. Just about everything I've heard from actual visitors makes me want to be in there for more than a week or two.

If I ever went to Japan, I wouldn't stay there very long. Only a week or two, maybe, just to see what the culture is like and how different the place feels compared to New York (where I reside). I've heard a lot of good things about Japanese people, like how smart they are, how kind and helpful they are, etc. etc. Regardless of what they're doing, they will always take a few seconds of their time to help you out, even if they are complete strangers. The only thing bad about Japan, though, is that if you're from a different country, they will mostly treat you like an outsider. They'll constantly stare at you, speak to you as you're a little kid, and so on. Well, those are the only things that I've been hearing. Not sure how accurate they are, though, as I've never visited the place. d:

I only heard of Hokkaido when I read that it was the inspiration for Sinnoh, the region introduced in the 4th Gen Pokemon games.
Hokkaido is the northern part of Japan and quite close to Russia. So you can imagine how cold it is there.
If you like photography, it's a MUST place to go to. {:3}
But if you love city live you might find it boring tho.
